What Students Say
Likes
- The campus is beautiful. The buildings and gardens are well maintained, and the scenery is quite the sight. The classrooms are equipped with projector, AC and fans. Overall, the infrastructure might not be the best, but nice.
- The library is vast and equipped with books and materials a law student need. There is space to study in the library and its open till 11.00 and E-books and online legal resources are also avaliable
- The area is an industrial area, so online delivery services are fast and easy. The mess food is okay-ish much better than my last experiences; we have a private canteen in campus which is affordable. Uber service is elite here, fast but not cheap
Dislikes
- As much as I liked the campus, the area is a bit isolated and rural. there are no proper shops; let me make that clear yes there are shops but you won't find aesthetic cafes and supermarkets unless u travel 20 mins.
- As mentioned, the area is an industrial area so it's not exactly the cleanest or the safest, I mean this the opinion of the whole of Kochi as an outsider. so take that to account if coming here
Course Curriculum Overview
I like studying crimes and their nature, and proceedings, and this is why I decided to pursue law. As a first year, we don't have to study in-depth law, but we are taught the BA subjects which include History, Political Science, Sociology, and Economics, which all serve as a base for the upcoming law sessions. The subject Legal Method, is literally like an introduction to law. All in all, i feel the curriculum is slow and steady helping students get used the the levels of law. I heard that the complete law subjects only start in the 3rd year, by then the whole foundation to study the heavy subject that is law is laid out. Personally, I feel there is no need for an improvement in the curriculum or the teaching method. It is quite easy to comprehend if you work hard. we have test papers that matter for our internal marks and the semester exam, and all these exams are moderate to hard I would say. Again depends on the work you put in.
Internships Opportunities
The internship opportunity is either to any high court or under a lawyer. Either you get in through personal connections or you wait in line, or you climb your own way up. All the ways lead to a good opportunity, that's for sure. Studying here itself is a good regard itself. For the first years, the internship is at the High Court of Kerala or in any NGO which is a personal choice. You just have to score well, be active in classes and volunteer in a lot of things and make a lot of connections. You will get an internship, and the college will get you one initially but to keep getting it you have to prove your worth.
Placement Experience
43 students were placed with an average salary of 10 lakhs per annum and 8 from the post-graduate has been placed. We have a really active placement cell that effectively helps and mentors students with their internship and other resources which further helps in getting placed. The placements are mostly under law firms and corporate firms, judges, and lawyers. the college usually contacts available firms and slots and advises students who then have to undergo an interview to soldify their placement. Almost 40% of the whole strength is immediately placed which is a considerably good amount. My plan is to get into litigation after my degree
Fees and Financial Aid
The annual tuition fee for our college is 1,25,000; in comparison to other NLU's, it's quite reasonable and accessible. At the time of admission, a fee of 5,000 is asked; the tuition fees include various other fees thus there is no need to pay them separately; the college asks you to pay a quotient deposit of 10,000 and other funds which will all add upto the amount of 1,75,000 per annum. For management categories, the fees is dynamic in nature and depends upon various factors and basically how much money you are willing to pay. One of my batchmates is said to have paid around 35 lakhs for a seat here. For SC/ST categories, as per the E-grants system of Kerala, the tuition fees are nil but they have to pay the admission fees and the hostel deposit if the hostel facility is availed. The NRI category students has to pay more money to get their seats.
Campus Life
Campus life is fun, as a hosteler it's extra fun for sure. We have various extracurricular activities and many different clubs to nurture talents in many different aspects. For example, we have a very active Debate society and recently a few first years got an opportunity to go to the RCL debate held in banglore, which is a humongous thing as first years usually dont get many opportunities. The moot society is also very established, as im typing this Im parallelly preparing for the Fresher's moot court and the MCS is also sorting out to find moots for all students including first years. The music club is also well established, I witnessed that during our freshers' event. the sports clubs are also established. Basketball, Cricket, Football, badminton, and Tennis are a few of the many sports that prevail here. There are cultural events and sports events every year as far as I know, and it's not just music other arts are also focused, like drama, movies, fashion, etc.
Hostel Facilities
Due to the over-accommodation in the actual girl's hostel, the new first years were made to stay in the faculty apartments which is basically a flat, and around 7-10 girls in an apartment. it is a little tight but more spacious than the actual hostel. Each student gets a chair, table, bed, and wardrobe. The bathroom is shared by around 3-4 girls. I admit privacy is a little to not available but this life is fun in its own ways, you will get used to it. There are various PG/ rooms avalible around too. The registration process is through the CLAT counselling itself, they contact you via mail and then you have to move in acquiring the room.
Admission
Admission to the college is through cracking clat exam. An average score of 80-90 is required in clat which is dynamic in nature. After the results are published you have to undergo rounds of counseling, more rounds depending upon whether you get placed into a college, choose that college, or quit everything overall. if you choose a particular college, you have to pay a certain sum to freeze your seat. Then further administrative process occurs and you are contacted via mail to fill in your documents and pay the due amounts, i.e.; tuition fees and hostel fees, etc. The clat exam itself is moderately to hard and requires skill in English and general knowledge to crack. It is comparatively easy to crack in comparison to NEET or JEE. As a member of the ST community, I got my seat through the seat reserved for ST. There is one seat reserved for ST, more as per the strength of the batch, and getting that seat depends on your AIR or your all Kerala rank.
Faculty
As first years, we have 6 subjects out of which 4 are taken by guest faculty. The permanent staff takes the subject of economics and Legal Methods, both well versed in their subjects. the guest faculty too are good at what they do and take classes attentively and nicely. There is this ongoing myth by our parents and elders that college professors don't care what we do in their classes. There are assignments, projects, homework, and other stuff daily, the teachers grade you on these works, so you can't slack off, and neither can they. The teachers are inclusive and help students out, listening to their worries, to an extent.
