What Students Say?
Likes
- MSU campus really gives the dream, medieval and serene vibes. The campus is very much wide. I'm from faculty of arts.
- I'm in third year of bachelor's at the psychology department. It has in house internship and also one of the rare collges that allows for the student to choose a specialisation paper from third year onwards (obviously depending upon marks)
Dislikes
- The classes are cancelled often but for psychology department , it's okayish.
- For a reputed university, the academic pattern is a bit outdated.
Course Curriculum Overview
The Psychology department or the Faculty of Education and Psychology is one of the unique and popular faculty of the university. It allows freedom and nurtures the students. There are frequent seminars and workshops which is more of an interdisciplinary approach for exposure and preparing the individuals for an all round development. The faculty has two exams - mid semester and end semester, which is 30+70. I suggest to attain the classes regularly or if not, be prepared as early as possible cause the exams are unpredictable.
Fees and Financial Aid
Well, to be very honest, the yearly fees ranges from 7-8k, in which there is also a concession for female students. The hostel is 7k per year but 10k for the first year as 3k will be for the deposit which is refundable at the end of the course. There is a university scholarship where the minimum eligibility is 55 percent. I'm not familiar with the campus employment but the package seems to be decent. If you opt for Higher Payment Programme (HPP), the fees would be 54k which can be paid in installments during the two semesters of an year.
Campus Life
Well if you are a sociable person, MSU would be an ideal for you. It has annual festivals regularly. The libraries are quite decent. The classrooms needs to be refurnished. Bench and desk are not properly installed, fans are very less or even not at all looking at the very hot and humid weather of Vadodara. Apart from this, there is BMG club of the department which is run by the professor and students that also manages the department fests and stuffs.
Hostel Facilities
The hostel room is okay but the facility needs to be improved. It's basically a 3 room seater but the tables are not properly provided. We have to beg for a table and a chair. The lights and bulbs are not properly fixed yet it's on our own expenses. The food is meh. The only good thing is the 24 hour electricity and water facility. For a fee of 7k, it may seem okay but the minimum standards are not met sadly. You wouldn't get a hostel at one go. One must have to get admission and wait for the portal. Once applied, you have to wait until you get a seat (distant students are given the first chance) I used to stay in a PG for two months before I shifted to hostel. If you can't get in hostel, no worries, there are good and affordable PGs nearby the university.
Admission
The minimum percentage is 55. But for some faculties, the cut off is very high like my department. The application form is available at the university's website of rupees 300. The portal opens during the end of an yearly semester (around April -June). There are reservations for SC, ST and OBC (Gujarat obc). There might also be concessions for some special cases too. The admission process is quite hectic. It has around like 3 rounds. The cut offs are not released properly either.
Faculty
The faculty-to-student ratio is compromisable. To be honest, the faculty members are great. There are great mentors. For a department like psychology, the members are quite at the par. One thing I would like to point out is that a fresh pg student can lecture at the department as an assistant professor which is of a great opportunity. But the issue is the interaction between the professor and the students. Sometimes it feels a bit awkward yet this could be sort out. One suggestion would be to try as much as one can to be on a good terms with the professors
