Course Curriculum Overview

3.5

I would rate the course curriculum to be 8 out of 10. The relevance and comprehensiveness is quite good but the way it is taught and evaluation processes are not so good. Few professors give very easy grading whereas few professors give very low grades even after scoring good and doing alot of hardwork (sometimes because of relative grading). Learning skills to be able to be prepared for real life experiences varies widely from branch to branch like people from CSE get to learn alot of expertise and skills to solve real life problems but for other branches it is not so good because often people don't seem to be intrested in their course and try going for non core (software) placements.

Internships Opportunities

3.5

Professors offer projects every semester and one can join the project by contacting the professor. Google STEP, JPMC quant Mentorship and many other start-ups offer hire interns with an average stipend of 10-20k. Google STEP pays highest which is 87k per month

Placement Experience

4

In BTech, from 7th semester students are eligible to take up placements. If they are not placed they may go for startup or write GATE to get offer from PSUs or join IIMs or go foreign for MS or UPSC civil services. Good number of companies visit which includes top companies like Google, Microsoft, JPMC and many more. Around 60-70% of students get placed. I would like to join Civil Services.

Fees and Financial Aid

I am not totally aware of the fee increase policy but the fee structure is like general category students pay around 1 Lakh per semester as tuition fee whereas people from reserved category have no fees or very less fee. And hostel fee is mandatory for everyone which includes mess fees. People from reserved categories get NSP scholarship based on the income of their family and also an institute scholarship which is also based on the income of parents. As I belong to ST category I am supposed to pay 33000 hostel fee and 15000 institute fee which includes other charges like wellness, maintenance, etc. And I am exempted from the tuition fee.So it takes around 4 Lakhs for me to complete my education from this University.

Campus Life

3.5

Saarang (annual cultural fest) and Shaastra (annual Technical fest) both held in January are the major events which gather very large footfall even from outsiders. The Central Library has quite a lot of books and is available for all on first come first serve basis as there cannot be enough number of books for everyone in the branch and there is no restriction on how long can we keep a book with us as there is choice of renewal. The infrastructure and facilities in the classrooms are all high class. Students who want to join sports have no barriers, they can just go and practice with the people but selections and high amount of practice is required to become an inter IIT player. Co-curriculars include clubs like CFi, Nirmaan, Programming club and tech related workshops which requires a lot of effort and skills and people are recruited through various stages like application, test, interview.MITR, Saathi are student wellness programs and also many other clubs like Acad buddy, Pragati.

Hostel Facilities

4

Facilities in a hostel vary from hostel to hostel as new buildings come up and are equipped with the technology of that time. We are given a choice pf choosing mess once a month or 45 days which allows to change to any mess and the quality of the mess food will be good in the beginning of the mess period but it looses consistency as days go on. Registration and payment of fees is all done through ikollege, a webportal for the people of IIT Madras

Admission

The admission process was fair just like any other government exam. One suggestion I would like to give is about the syllabus of the JEE exam where I believe adding questions on topics of each broader division of branches (courses offered) and making the score in that topic mandatory to choose that branch helps students to get accustomed to their chosen branch in no time and can also help students realise whether are they interested in that course or not which would be very much helpful for them preventing them from suffering later. And the other thing is that Hostel fee in our institute is mandatory for everyone though they belong to the economically backward sections or reserved category.

The placement opportunities are plenty at IITM. Since I am in my first year, I don't know much about placements but I have heard that top companies around the world come for placements. The highest package this year was 4.3 crore per annum. The average salary in Electrical engineering is 22 LPA. I plan to join a company and work for a few years and then decide what to do. I am not yet clear about my future plans.

Students are eligible for placements from their 6th semester. Many companies like Infosys, CISCO, TCS, and more visit the college. The college provides a lot of Placement training to help us with our placements (in and outside the college) The highest package I have seen my seniors get was 60 LPA, I think. (I think the actual highest must be much more, but as I am not sure, I am not going to make a guess) The average package that you can expect at EEC is around 6-10 LPA. Pretty much all students get placed at my college. I intend to get placed after I get my degree and work full-time.

Placements are pretty decent, not the best not the worst. But if you are willing to put the hard work then you will be given a good opportunity. I say so because top tier companies such as Google, Microsoft, apple, dell etc do visit but take only a very few people, so if you are good enough to be in those then sure you can crack more than 50lpa
