Course Curriculum Overview

3

Sociology has always been my subject of curiosity. I wanted to know more about society and how it functions from an empirical perspective, which only Sociology could give me. So, I opted for the course. We had 1 professor, i.e. our HOD, 4 associate professors, and 2 faculty members who taught us throughout the 3 years. They were quite qualified and provided us with interesting lectures. However, just like the pros and cons of everything, some were lacking in delivering good lectures. But, overall, it was good. Assignments were given from time to time, and exams were conducted in a scheduled manner. The correction of the papers in our department is considered to be on the tough side in Ravenshaw, along with the English department. But the majority of us used to get decent grades.

Placement Experience

2.5

Since, I took admission for my Bachelor's degree, I can share detailed information regarding the undergraduate programme only. The placements only come for streams like ITM, IST, BCom, BCA, etc and it's around the 5th semester. Companies like Deloitte, Tech Mahindra, etc visit. I'm ot well versed with what package they offer to the undergrads since the humanities stream or other streams barely recieve any placement offers.

Fees and Financial Aid

One of the things about Ravenshaw University that makes it the top 3 choice of all students in Odisha is its affordability. The college fee is just under 10000 for regular Bachelor courses (self finance is high). You just need to pay 200 to 250 for each semester as the exam fee (excluding the fee in case you have back paper) and a readmission fee each year, which is under 1000. For students from extremely poor background who can't afford it, there's several scholarship by the Odisha govt. that they apply for and the university accepts. The campus jobs mostly comes for courses like ITM, B.Com, Computer Application, etc. The humanities domain doesn't really see any campus placement.

Campus Life

2.5

The campus life is vivd. There are quite a few clubs like Cultural, Literary, Drama, etc which organise competitions from time to time. Ravenshaw Model United Nations (RUMUN) is a standardized event organised every year and students from different colleges all across Odisha participate as delegates in it. The library is quite big, but doesn't really have all the books you might require. The books are a bit old and outdated. But that being said, the library is helpful to a certain extent. Some of the classrooms are old, so they don't really have all the amenities. But others are renovated with all the necessities. Annually, a cultural event is organised which has sports, literature, and all sorts of themes included.

Hostel Facilities

4

The university has a total of 13 in-campus hostel (6 girls' hostel and 7 boys' hostel) for both UG and PG courses. A few hostels also accommodate PhD candidates. However, due to it being such a huge university with multitudinal courses, we can't say all the students get the hostel. The hostel is allocated on the basis of merit. If your name is higher in the merit list, you can easily get the hostel. Most of the hostels are old (constructed in the 1900s) with a few being newly built. So, some have rooms shared by 4 people, some by 5, and few by 6. Just like the university itself, the hostels are highly affordable as well. You just need to pay once every year for electricity, etc (around 8k-10k) and rest is monthly food you eat (1.5k-2k per month). Food is okay per the price taken. And the hostels are safe and located inside campus.

Admission

My admission into Ravenshaw University under the Bachelor of Arts (Sociology Hons) programme was on the basis of merit (Class 12th Boards), as was for all the students under B.Sc., B.Com, etc. The cut-off for Sociology in 2020, when I took admission, was 85% achieved in the Class 12 Board examination (CBSE, ISC, CHSE, etc). It is always around the same every year. So, if you have scored above 80, you don't have to worry. You can easily get into the programme. The eligibility criteria is extremely generic. Securing above 50% in Class 12th Boards examination from a recognised school/college. The application form is made available in the official website of the University after the results of all the higher secondary boards are announced and the whole process of taking admission lasts about a month.

Other Applied Colleges

St. Xavier's College - [SXC] | Bachelor of Arts [BA] {Hons.} (Sociology)

Due to financial crunch, I couldn't take admission into this college.
