Remarks
The college is good but due to inability of administration the basic needs such as internet is scarce. This is a new IIT and hence is still developing to meet the stanadards of an IIT.
Entrance Preview
I qualified JEE Advanced 2015 with All India Rank 3493. I participated in the counselling procedure which is administered by JoSAA and got Civil Engineering branch in IIT (BHU) Varanasi. There wasn't any interview process. I wanted a core engineering branch and did not want to go into new IITs without proper infrastructure. However I expected to change my branch after first year but could not succeed due to tough competitions and limited number of seats.
Course Curriculum Overview
Civil Engineering is the mother of all engineering branches. It forms the core of engineering and has subjects that require deep understanding of physics. This course focuses maximum on practical aspect of engineering. We have sophisticated labs which help in proper learning of course. The Institute promotes research in every possible way. Professors encourage students to take up research projects of topics they have interest in. There aren't any elective courses till V semester in which I am currently studying.
Internships Opportunities
A lot of companies come to college for hiring students for internships. the competition is tough and only the deserving get it. Although a lot of students do internships from external sources. Also there is a lot of focus on research internships and students do these internships in other institutes in India and abroad. There are a lot of programs for other colleges and students secure these internships by individually mailing the professors as well.
Placement Experience
Overall placement of civil engineering branches in core companies is unsatisfactory. Less than 20% students went to core jobs. A lot of students choose non core jobs and got nice packages. The remaining lot either went for higher studies or IES/IAS preparations.
Fee Structure And Facilities
The fees is quite high but it has a lot of concession on economical grounds. Fees are fully waived for students with parental income less than rs. 1 lakh. So my fees is Rs. 50950 per semester but there are a lot of scholarships. I have been selected for merit cum means scholarship which is rs. 1 lakh per year. So effectively, the amount I pay is rs. 1900 per year.
Hostel Facilities
I am currently residing in Limbdi Hostel. The rooms are shared between two people and are of medium size. Hostel is ensured to every student so there is no concept of PG for us. The hostels are free for students. However we pay for our food. The cost of food in mess is paid on semester basis as Rs. 12000 per semester. The food is average. The taste of vegetables is below average but breakfast and dinner are usually good. There is lot of emphasis on hygiene in mess food hence food is always hygienic.
Exam Structure
Before 2017-2018, there were two mid term exams and the schedule was indeed very tiring, but now there is only one exam and students get a lot more time than before. There are an average of 3-4 labs per semester but it was just appropriate. One would feel tired at end of 1-2 days of the week due to large number of classes but rest days of week are chill.
Faculty
All the faculty here is a PhD from an IIT or other highly reputed colleges. Some of them have done their PhD from foreign universities as well. Most of them are experts of their fields. However, few of them are not very interactive and some don't know how to teach. But still most of faculty is experienced, interactive and most importantly, students can reach to any professor for help and they are very supportive. Overall, standard of teaching is satisfactory.
