Course Curriculum Overview
I chose this course because of my rank and also I was interested in the course of civil engineering. The course curriculum is very well designed where we learn the basics and advanced topics in a span of 4 years. The faculty: student ratio is nearly 1:80. All the faculty members are very well qualified in their respective fields and they all have PhD Degrees. The teaching method is mostly through ppts and something blackboard. One semester works for around 4 months. We have 2 quizzes in between and one end-semester exam at the end which is generally a 20+20+60 breakup. The exams are not that easy but if you study well even one week of the exam, you will definitely pass.
Internships Opportunities
I don't know more about internships as I am currently in my first year. The internship usually starts in the third year. Many multinational companies visit our campus. In the previous year, 858 students got internships from our campus.
Placement Experience
The placements at IIT Madras are very good and are increasing year by year. The students become eligible for placements after the 7th semester and nearly all the students get placed. In the year 2022, around 500 companies visited our campus including Amazon, Flipkart, Microsoft, and Infosys and around 1500 offers are made. The highest package made was 2.14 crore per annum and the average package was 17.33 lakhs per annum. After getting the degree, I am planning to pursue my higher education in M.tech in a foreign country
Fees and Financial Aid
The annual tuition fee for a general category student is 1 lakh per annum and 11 thousand per annum as other expenses. For other category students, the fees vary. The fee hike also happens after a certain duration of time. Category students get a scholarship from the institute with a reduction in their tuition fees. As of now, I have not got any scholarship or financial assistance from the institute.
Campus Life
Life on campus is very enjoyable. The infrastructure is world-class and we get all the necessary facilities inside the campus itself. The annual fest is called Saarang which is South Asia's largest cultural fest. It happens during the month of January. The tech fest is called Shaastra which is held during the month of January. The library is equipped with all the necessary books and journals for a student. The classroom is equipped with all the necessary things such as a projector, blackboard, benches, etc. Our campus has one of the best facilities for sports. It has dedicated grounds for all sports and also has gym centres and Olympic size swimming pools. There are many social groups here which include the Finance Club, E-cell (Entrepreneurship club), Drama Club, Film Club, CFI (Centre for Innovation Club) and many more.
Hostel Facilities
I stay in the hostels which are inside the campus itself. It is a triple-sharing accommodation with sufficient space. The room is provided with basic things such as a bed, table chair and almirahs. The mess menu is also good and the quality of the food is equally good. Registration for hostels is done on the institute's website only.
Admission
Admission to IITs is based on the performance of the applicant in JEE Advanced which is regarded as the toughest engineering entrance exam in India. To apply for JEE advanced, the applicant has to clear the cutoff of JEE mains which is different for different category students. For me, it was 88.412 percentile. For JEE advanced the cutoff was 55 marks out of 360. After that, the admission process is carried out in the portal www.josaa.nic.in where everything regarding the application can be found. There are a total of 6 rounds and after that, we get our final seat. Overall, the admission process went smoothly but I expect that next time, the authorities should be quick in checking the submitted documents as for me, it happened just one day before the first round. Thus to avoid panic, this can be done well in advance.
