Remarks
IIT Bombay is one of the best institutions in India. As per my best experience, it has the best organizational structure with very well managed. The bad point of campus life is a lot of freedom to students sometimes raises the question in my mind about the morals of the student graduating from the campus.
Entrance Preview
Well, for Ph.D. admissions there is an entrance exam held twice a year. That is for spring and fall semesters. Notifications are displayed on iitb website in the month of March and November. Scores of the exam are not published. Only students who are qualified minimum criteria are selected for further process. IITB is having almost all the research facilities that one expects for his/her complete research. Besides that, we get fellowships which are pretty much sufficient for one's monthly expenditure.
Course Curriculum Overview
In IIT Bombay there is two kinds of courses, elective and mandatory. For a Ph.D. course works one has to complete a minimum of 16 to 22 credits(department wise). Courses are well advanced in correlation with the current state of the art technology. In the case of elective courses, one can choose any course from any department as per his/her liking. The most important thing is Mechanical and Electrical departments have qualifier exams after a year of admission. One has to qualify for the exam to confirm the Ph.D. registration and hence continuation of Ph.D.
Internships Opportunities
In IIT Bombay, a body called IRCC provides the internship programs with stipends. The general amount of stipend is 10K per month. Internships are allotted depending upon the available projects and student caliber is measured by a panel of faculty members. Rather than this, there is IITB paid (by the student) internship program in which external students can enroll. Fees are decided according to the duration of the internship.
Placement Experience
For Ph.D. placement is not a crucial factor. Most of the research students chose to go for Post. Doctorate in world-class universities. From the last few years placement ratios for Ph. D.s are increasing because of efforts taken by Ph.D. student organizations along with placement cell. The packages vary depending upon the type of Ph.D. and recruiter.
College Events
Techfest: Technical Event and competitions. Mood indigo: Cultural event and sort of annual student gathering with various competitions like singing, dance, street plays, and many more. Besides that, there are numerous student bodies that work in the economy [e-cell], start-ups, social areas [Abhyuday], health [Yogastha], and many more. IIT Bombay is a trendsetter for college-level event management.
Fee Structure And Facilities
For PhDs, the semester fee structure is around 19K. For the hostel and mess, it is 15K. So each semester it is around 35K. The same is true for PG courses. One has to decide whether it is expensive or affordable depending upon the budget. But remember you will get value for each penny spent.
Fees and Financial Aid
Type of Scholarship for Ph.D. students: 1. TA: Teaching Assistant funded by MHRD for 5 years. (25K per month for first two years, 28K per month after two years) 2. TAP: Teaching Assistant through project ( Depending upon project budgets ) 3. RA: Research Assistant (Slightly more paid (~28K) compare to TAs subjected to more working hours: for a TA 8 Hours per week; for RA 20 Hours per week)
Campus Life
Well, the IITB campus is well known and reputed not only for academics but also overall activities in diverse fields beginning from arts to most recent technologies. IITB campus is the most modern campus compare to all other IITs in terms of religion, gender equality, hassle-free active politics. So one should not bother about insecurities due to the above matters.
Hostel Facilities
IIT Bombay is a fully residential campus. Hostel facilities are good enough to stay. Every Ph.D. student is allotted a single room. The rooms are a bit small. But no worries. One has to pay mess fees compulsory to retain the hotel room. These mess fees are 15 K per semester including some deposited which are refunded at the end of the semester subjected to your extra expenditure in the mess menus. Mess facilities are very economical (subjected to subsidies from the government ) and very hygienic in class.
Alumni/Alumna
IIT Bombay has a very strong alumni network. For example, few new constructions such as classroom complex are fully financed by distinguished alumni Azim Premji. IITB alumni networks strengthen the placement process of IITB and also helpful for aspirants of new startups with distinct ideas. These various examples of well-established companies which are originated from student-alumni relationships.
Exam Structure
Exam structure in IIT Bombay is very versatile. As different faculty members have different approached to assess students. So one can not generalize the exam structure of IIT Bombay as that of universities. The also common things are mid-semester exams and end semester exams. But again, the syllabus for exams is solely decided by the concerned faculty member.
Admission
Different departments have different strategies for the selection process. But the most common method is a written test followed by an interview where fundamentals concerned with the area of research are checked rigorously by panels of professors. Aspirants can find the syllabus for the exam in the Ph.D. entrance brochure published on the website at the same time of notification of the entrance exam. Kindly note that exams are held twice in a year that is in the month of May( Fall semester) and December (Spring semester).
Faculty
IIT Bombay has the best class of highly qualified faculty members with an elite research background. But at the end of the day teaching is more of art than methodology. So my personal opinion is good to the okay faculty member ratio remains the same as normal as university-affiliated colleges in India. Most of the faculty members are research-oriented rather than a good teacher.
