Computer Science at IIT Roorkee

IIT Roorkee has maintained years of reputation educating thousands of graduates and giving them a bright future. Lately, It was ranked as the sixth best college in India in the engineering sector and ninth as the overall best college. Hence, I shortlisted the university for my further studies after completing 12th grade. The shortlisting is done on the basis of JEE Mains and JEE Advanced rankings and also the counselling session conducted afterwards. The cutoff for computer science has an opening rank of 801 and closing rank of 1205. This cutoff is only limited to males and females of the open category. Relaxation in cutoffs is provided to the students of reserved quotas. After being shortlisted, I received a call to pay the fees and the security deposit. The college is also known for the wide range of the alumni network that it provides and other such perks and incentives.

The course curriculum in the first year involves the basics of all engineering minors like chemical, mechanical and metallurgical engineering. However, from the sophomore year, education becomes specialized on the basis of the subject chosen. In my case, the computer science curriculum involved modules like chemistry, introduction to computer programming, linear algebra and ordinary differential equations, modern physics, data analysis and interpretations, Numerical analysis, introductions to electrical and electronic circuits, logic designs, environmental studies, database, etc. Whereas, the elective subjects involve topics like distributive systems, numerical computations, computer graphics, software engineering, machine learning, artificial intelligence, cryptography and network security, modeling and simulation, linear optimization, etc. The staff and faculty here is extremely experienced and co-operative. They never hesitate to solve doubts more than once. The faculty-student ratio here is 8:1

IIT Roorkee is known for its excellent placement records and alumni careers. Not only the campus placements, the Pre-placement offers made to the students during their tenure of internship was drastic and remarkable. The highest package offered was 69.5 lakhs per annum while the average package was 20 Lakhs per annum. 265 companies booked the slot to conduct the campus interview. These companies included Jaguar Land rover, Flipkart, Goldman Sachs, Intel technology, Micron technology, Oracle, Qualcomm India, Cohesity, Codenation, Amazon, Alphonso, etc. Around 650 students were placed in some of the major tech companies globally. 11 students even bagged the offer from abroad with a package of 1 crore per annum. These recruiting companies were Microsoft, Google, and JP Morgan.

IIT Roorkee has it flagship scholarship called the James Thompson scholarship. Students having the JEE Rank upto 250 are eligible for this scholarship. These students are provided a fee waiver as per the decisions of the department along with a grant of 25000 rupees per month for the students to incur miscellaneous expenses. Another scholarship is the MCM, also known as merit-cum-means. The undergraduate student that has a family income below 4 lakhs is eligible for a fee waiver and a minimum of 1000 rupees for 10 months per academic year.

Along with strong academic records, the campus life of IIT-Roorkee is refreshing and fun-loving. The sports complexes and other amenities here makes it impossible for you to get bored or idle at the campus. The Mahatma Gandhi Central library here contains more than 3,50,000 documents in its database. This library is air conditioned and can accommodate up to a maximum of 500 students. Cognizance is the technical festival at IIT-Roorkee which conducts workshops and hackathons both intra and inter-college. Thomso is a cultural festival which brings along literature, music, dance and other art forms. Sangram is the annual sports fest that has competitions and conferences regarding sports round the year
