Remarks

I had not applied to other colleges. I had applied to George Group of Colleges, Kolkata for pursuing a career in the media industry. I got the chance to study Media Science (Hons.) and the admission process was a breeze. I did not avail any quota for admission although I had the chance to opt for a sports quota selection, I had already got the chance so I didn't push for it. The admission criteria for the Media Science program was a minimum of 50% marks in the 12th and the minimum age was of 18 years. As I mentioned earlier, the admission process was very easy I went to the college paid the necessary fees of admission and on the counseling day, I got an overview of the opportunities that await me after completing the course. I also got the college uniform on that day itself.

Course Curriculum Overview

5

I had earlier made the wrong decision of going in for B.Tech (CSE) from Guru Nanak Institute of Technology as I was not cut out for the rigorous activities of the engineering program due to some personal problems. I went in for career counseling under two different career counselors with the latter working to my advantage. Afterward, the career counselor Dr. Mahua Moitra evaluated my career plan and gave me three options to choose from: Media Science, Sports Management, and Physiotherapy. I chose Media Science because at that time I wanted to be a sports journalist but I also had a passion for filmmaking. We had a faculty: student ratio of 7:50. Our HOD and other teachers had Master's degrees in their respective fields. The teachers were helpful and I personally enjoyed the photography and film classes. Our exams were held twice a year, as part of the semester system. We also had internals that would keep us engaged in studies throughout the semesters. The exams were easy for me.

Internships Opportunities

4.5

Golftrade.net The role offered: Editor Monthly salary: 6700 INR I had to manage the Golftrade calendar and was responsible for writing daily website content. I wrote daily news articles and blogs pertaining to golf.

Placement Experience

4.5

Students were eligible for campus placements from the 5th semester onwards. Most media houses came for campus interviews and online web portals and startups that needed content creators. Media houses like Zee 24 had come for taking freshers into their fold. The highest package offered was 1 lakh 80 thousand INR

Fees and Financial Aid

The tuition fees for each semester were INR 27500 that amounted to INR 55000 per year. The fees were the same all throughout the duration of the program. I got a chance to work as an Editor for Golftrade.net at the Tollygunge Golf Club under the mentorship of Indian golfer Indrajit Bhalotia. This was an internship that I had got with the assistance of the placement team and the Head of the Department of Media Science. I was in the second year of my course when I got the internship opportunity. I used to earn INR 6700 per month for a period of 3 months.

Campus Life

Our department had the most impactful annual fest that was titled "Panchami" as it was held during the Panchami of the festival of Durga Puja. We would prepare documentaries, dramas, and songs and dances for this annual festival of the Media Science department. We would have all the teachers and faculty members along with the non-teaching staff of the college come to the Auditorium for attending "Panchami". All the books and journals that we needed were available at the library, although the librarians were grumpy, they were helpful enough to help us fetch the books we needed. During the Teachers' day celebrations, we would perform songs and dance for our teachers and we would also have a student-organized journal that would be published during Panchami. I was a part of the college football team that participated in the Inter-college football tournament. We also had a drama club. We made films and documentaries during our course.

Course Curriculum Overview:

I feel the theory part of our curriculum isn't much relevant or prepares for real - world applications, only some basic information is what I feel is necessary, although the lab and the practical part prepares us for real - world applications and teaches us a lot of things related to photography, news paper page building, survey report, etc. I believe they should have a better approach and teach more relevant real - world or in demand market skills which'll help the students in the future. Exams are conducted 2 times in a year, once between March - april, and second time between August - September.

Course Curriculum Overview:

From my childhood, I'm into music and this course allows me to further widen my knowledge of the entertainment industry, films, Television and etc. So this course will allow me to understand how media and journalism world works, and help me pursue the art that I love. The timings could be better of the college, but rather than that everything is mostly good. The frequency in my opinion, should be reduced to 3 main semester exams, and to have small mid semester exams throughout. That's my perspective.

Course Curriculum Overview:

1. I opted for this course because I thought it would have a good practical work, with good exposure and experience. But this course has nothing as such. The documentary we did was done all by ourselves. College did not help at all. There was a photo journalsm option in one paper but our college did not let us study that. They did not teach anything about photography, no practical training was given. 2. None. The curriculum doesn't prepare us for the real world at all. There is no professional study or activities. No preparation for interviews or real world jobs. Only theoretical and advices from our faculty. College doesn't provide any activity that can help us for the real world job. 3. More and more practical work with the help of college. More exposure needed. High quality software and equipments are needed. Students need a GOOD professional lab. More exciting activities for students. Placement opportunities, internships etc. 4. BAD. Per sem arrives in 2.5 months, too short time

Course Curriculum Overview:

Journalism is one of my favorite sudject . One of the reasons for choosing this subject is that only a journalist can highlight the good and bad aspects of our society before the people. The scope of the subject is journalism but it is huge. We can learn not only journalism but also photography, radio, film studies etc. The behaviors of all the professors in the journalism department in this college is very well. They very carefully explain all the topics thoroughly to the students so that the students do not have to face any difficulty with those topics later. Every year two semesters are taken every six months if the students do all the classes carefully and study well then they can easily pass by getting good marks
