Remarks
Before the completion of my boards examination I was pretty clear that I won't go for post graduation courses, according to the reviews which I have collected from my seniors and other industrialists. I decised to go for hotel management though I didn't have any interest in cooking food but communication skills and interacting ability, hardwork was required as well as it had many other departments as well apart from only kitchen. So I was determined to shine in such a type of environment.
Course Curriculum Overview
There is a very misconception which is practiced and believed throughout India that Hotel Management means only "Cooking Food", well let me clear it out, this is not the case. It is a 3 year B.Sc. Degree including 6 semeaters. It has four core departments i.e., Front Office, Accommodation Operations (Housekeeping), Kitchen (Cookery and Bakery) and Food and Beverage Services. Apart from these core departments one may opt from Food Retail and Non Food Retail Companies during their campus interviews. We have subjects like Accountancy, Strategic Management, Nutrition so a student coming from humanities, commerce, science will get benefited in some of the semesters Well the faculties are pretty much strict and they try to maintain discipline throughout the college. They are well skilled and give their 100% to make sure the students learn and get placed in a well reputed company. During the second year a student has to undergo the Industrial Training in a Five star hotel which is a part of the course. The duration of the training is for 4 months and one would get less than descent amount as a stipend.
Internships Opportunities
I have undergone my industrial training during the 3rd semester as a part of my course from Hyatt Regency, Kolkata. Stipend was 1000 INR per month.
Placement Experience
A student may opt for hotels (Front Office, Kitchen, Housekeeping and Food and Beverage Services) or Food or Non Food Retails. Top hotels like The Oberoi, Hyatt, Acor Group of hotels visited. For Food retails there were companies like KFC, Mc Donald's, Fasos and for Non Food there were companies like Reliance Industries Limited, Aditya Birla Group, Tommy Hilfiger, etc. Usually the attendance was a major criteria for seating for placements.
College Events
The students were always kept busy with assignments but there were activities and events which were organised by the college. Food Fest was held every year in our college and new recipes were tried and different cuisines were brought in front by the students. Annual day was held every year which was mainly followed by distribution of prizes and guest lectures. National seminar was organised by our college apart from these the college's separate teams took part in various tournaments and contests.
Campus Life
There was no Wi-fi in my college for the students, it was officially restricted to the faculties but unofficially a lot can happen. There was very less time to practice sports but we managed to participate in tournaments and every year sports week would happen,so it was always fun. We used to have a separate football team and I still remember the practice sessions we had just before the tournaments. Now coming to the equipments section, we had one Basic Training Kitchen for the first years, Quantity Food Kitchen for the second years and Assistant training Kitchen for the third years. Equipments were divided accordingly. Apart from the kitchen we had a mess, 3 restaurants (non commercial).
Hostel Facilities
There are total 120 seats for boys hostel for the First years and for girls, they all are offered for hostel accommodation. The hostel food is good, one will get food 4 times a day which includes breakfast, lunch, evening snacks and dinner. The hostel rooms are descent for living, double sharing, triple sharing rooms are there for the first and second years and usually third years were applicable for non sharing single occupancy rooms. The washroom is common but it is cleaned daily.
