Remarks
Though the College is said to be one among the prestigious National universities in India, the quality of education we receive in this institution is deteriorating every year. The appointment of the incompetent teaching faculty is the best example to this issue. The College life of the students is also not that interesting as the campus is pretty small with no space for the students to even sit, talk and chill. There are not even trees inside the campus for a proper shade.
Course Curriculum Overview
The curriculum at present is a based on classroom learning based on lectures. The new Vice Chancellor of the College is trying to bring about changes to the status quo and bring Innovative methods in order to make the class rooms more lively. The exams are conducted at the end of each semester. The maximum marks for the end semester examination is 50 and the remaining 50 is for the internal assessment. I have a personal feeling that the 50 marks internal is something which is the sole decision of the faculty teaching the subject. The break down of the internal marks include marks for class participation, class disciplines, attendance, internal tests, project and viva voce. The marks awarded for discipline and class participation is purely arbitrary and is awarded according to the wims and fancies of the faculty.
Placement Experience
There is no 100% placements in College. However, the placement cell, which again is an initiative of the students, has tried and brought in certain number of recruiters for placement. However, job opportunities for the students from the College are vast and the importance to this field is now emerging like anything. The College mandates that every student should do a minimum of 15 days internship at the end of every semester. However, the College does not provide any help for the students to find out internships or help the students in arranging for internship. The whole burden is on the students to find out proper internships for themselves.
College Events
The inter College fest conducted in the College every year is called NAALAM in which students from all over the country participate. This is an event which contains different programs and the prizes for the winners are also usually very attractive. Then there are sports fests also conducted every year. Apart from them, the College conducts Onam, Diwali and Holi celebrations every year.
Fee Structure And Facilities
Annual fee- 1. 5 lakhs. The fees are not feasible. At least for students from a middle class family or a below average earning family, this is a pretty big figure which they may not really be able to afford. Such high priced fee makes a feeling among the students itself that only those who are rich may only be given the opportunity to study.
Fees and Financial Aid
The students who are from the backwards communities such as SC and ST students receive certain financial aid from the government because of which their entire expenses are reimbursed. Moreover, there is an NK Nambiar scholarship for the students of low income groups. Apart from this, there are a free IDIA scholars in our College. IDIA is a Non profit, non governmental organization which runs for the benefit of the student community.
Campus Life
There is an annual sports meet conducted every year in the College. There is no issue of gender problems within the College. Every gender is treated equally and there are no difference in treatment for different genders. The students are only evaluated or judged on the basis of their skills and knowledge. Be it a male or a female, there is not different in treatment or opportunities.
Hostel Facilities
I have not opted for hostel. However the fees for hostel is 50, 000 per year. The rooms are mostly 3 or 4 Sharing rooms. The students from far of places mostly stay in the hostel only. The availability of Pg near to College is very few.
Alumni/Alumna
There is an alumni meet conducted in College every year. The students who have studied here before and are in good position now, speak and Interact with the students. They tell the current students on what all they can do to have a better College life and a great career in future.
Admission
I am law student studying in the National Law University in Kochi. It is one among the prestigious National Law Universities across India and the only one in the state of Kerala. The admission to thes National Law Schools are purely based on the Common Law Admission Test (CLAT). The students will be assessed on different aspects which include: logical reasoning, English, maths, law, and general knowledge. A person can appear for the test on payment of a certain examination fee (which was Rs. 4000 in 2016). After the examination, the ranks would be published and the students would be allotted the College based on their preferences according to their ranks. This means that the best rank holders get to study in the top ranked University, which for many years now is the NLU of Bangalore. After the allottment is done, the students would be called for the interview in the respective Colleges along with their parents. This is basically an informal meeting of the students with the Vice Chancellor as well as certain other faculties of that particular College. After the interview, the admission process is complete. Apart from the allottment based on merit, there are special seats for the SC, ST, NRIs and foreign nationals. For the NRIs and the foreign nationals, the fees would be higher than that of the students who acquired the seat through merit.
Faculty
There are a few very good faculities in my College, who have adequate knowledge on the subject they teach. However, sadly, most of the appointments made in the recent times are those who possess minimal or nil knowledge in the subject they are called to teach. Being in a national university and not receiving proper education is a sad fact. The appointments of the faculties are again fully on the hands of the Vice Chancellor and the administration which make them to appoint highly unqualified staff thereby putting the students in trouble.
