It's fine unless you're not used to eating mess food. In that case, you may grow tired of the same dishes. Food isn't an issue if you don't mind spending a little money – now and then to eat out. You could also pay extra and have a few extra items made from the mess for yourself.
The mess is run by the student body, and you can bargain over the prices and menu items. The real problem is that mess workers are members of the local union and thus have some bargaining power, which is common in West Bengal.
Any IIM Calcutta aspirant will be more than glad to know that the number of messes in IIM Calcutta is 7. Out of these, four belong to the four PGP hostels, which are managed by the dedicated staff of each mess. The other two belong to the PGP-Ex hostels and the last one is the mess of the faculty.
PGP students can either eat their meals as per meal basis at any of the mess or can even register at the mess of the hostel where they live. As far as the food is concerned, its quality is pretty decent here in comparison to what people usually get in other business or engineering hostels.
There are a couple of eating joints inside as well as outside the campus. Furthermore, there are night canteen facilities which run in the night from 11 pm to 5 am. In case you miss your dinner for some urgent assignment, then also you won’t need to worry as the mess takes care of that as well.
