VTU year back rule and CBCS (Choice Based Credit System):

yes, VTU cancelled the strict year back system for CBCS scheme students. here's what it means:

  • under old VTU scheme, failing subjects in one semester could result in year back (not progressing to next academic year)
  • under CBCS scheme: there is no year back. students can carry backlogs and progress semester by semester regardless of failed subjects
  • you can accumulate credits over time. failed subjects (F grade) can be re-attempted in subsequent attempts
  • the CBCS system is designed so you accumulate credits until you meet total credit requirements for the degree
  • maximum time to complete: typically 8 years (2× the 4-year program duration)

so for CBCS VTU students, being detained for year back is not applicable — you just carry your backlogs forward. however, you must clear all required credits within the maximum time limit. check vtu.ac.in for your specific scheme and batch regulations.

VTU hasn’t canceled the year-back system. You will still get a year back if you get more than four backlogs in a year. But having backlogs previous to the previous year won’t result in a year-back. The rules are as follows.

  • Students who have less than four backlogs in the first two semesters are eligible for the second year.
  • Students who have less than four backlogs in the four semesters of the first year and second year are eligible to move to the third year.
  • Students who have the required credits for first year and don’t have more than four backlogs in four semesters of second and third year are eligible for fourth year.

So, you will still get a year-back, if you have more than four backlogs in an academic year.

VTU has never canceled the year back and has no plans for canceling it in the future. It is just providing students a second chance to attempt their backlogs.

If they clear the subject, they will go as per regular students' curriculum. If not, they have to wait for next year. Yes, this scheme is now available for CBCS students also.
