AKTU (Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam Technical University) semester passing criteria:

  • Theory: minimum 30 marks out of 100 (30%) in semester end exam PLUS 75% attendance required to sit in exam
  • Internal Assessment: minimum marks in sessional/internal separately
  • Combined passing: to pass a subject, you need minimum in both internal and external. failing either means a KT (backlog)
  • Overall semester: a student passes a semester by clearing individual subjects. with too many backlogs, promotion may be affected (year back rule applies)

AKTU's passing threshold is 30% in the end semester exam — relatively lenient compared to some universities. but attendance is strictly monitored (75% minimum compulsory). check aktu.ac.in for the latest ordinance for your specific batch/scheme as AKTU has multiple running exam schemes.

AKTU passing criteria is one of those things that trips up a lot of students because the internal and external components are evaluated separately. Here's the complete picture.

AKTU B.Tech passing criteria (per subject):

  • Theory subjects: Minimum 40 marks out of 100 total (combination of sessional/internal + external exam).
  • But here's the catch: You must pass both components independently — minimum 40% of external exam marks AND minimum 40% of internal/sessional marks. Passing in one doesn't compensate for failing the other.
  • Practical/Lab subjects: Minimum 50% marks.

AKTU Grading System (post-2019 NEP):

  • O = 91-100 ? 10 grade points
  • A+ = 81-90 ? 9 points; A = 71-80 ? 8 points; B+ = 61-70 ? 7 points; B = 51-60 ? 6 points; C = 45-50 ? 5 points; P = 40-44 ? 4 points; F = below 40 ? 0 (fail)

ATKT rules linked to passing:

  • 1-3 fails in a semester ? ATKT (move to next semester, clear in upcoming exams).
  • 4+ fails in a semester ? Cannot register for next semester.
  • Cumulative: Cannot carry more than 4 total backlogs at any time (from any previous semesters combined).

Practical note: Many students fail internal/sessional marks (negligence in class attendance/assignments) without realizing it counts toward their ATKT tally. Keep track of your sessional marks from the first semester itself.

AKTU passing criteria in a semester is

  • 30 out of 100
  • 15 out of 50

This is only for the external exams.

For internal exams, you need to score more than 30 out of 50. If you happen to have a back in any subject of 100 marks or 50 marks then you will get grace marks of 10 and 5 respectively. However, this accounts for the whole year and not just a single semester.

AKTU semester passing criteria is 30%. For a specific subject, the marks allotted include marks in end-semester theory paper, sessional work, and practical examination. The passing mark for each theory subject, including sessional marks is 40% with a minimum of 30% marks in the end semester examination. If there is no sessional for a subject, students are required to score a minimum of 30% in the end-semester examination.

For a project or a practical subject, the passing mark including sessional marks is 50%.

In order to pass AKTU semesters, you will need to score 30 marks out of 100. If the subject total is 50 then you will need to score 15, in order to pass the exam.

Though there are no such fixed criteria to pass a semester at AKTU, you need to pass at least 6 subjects in order to be promoted to the next semester.

Further, AKTU has changed its curriculum and pattern of the semester since 2018. The semester will consist of 3 subjects each. So the passing criteria would be the same but in order to get promoted into next year, you have to pass at least 3 of the subjects in every year of B.Tech.
