BHU (Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi) hostel fees including mess:

approximate current costs (may vary slightly by hostel):

  • Hostel room fee: Rs.1,000-3,000 per semester depending on hostel type (shared/single)
  • Mess charges: approximately Rs.2,500-3,500 per month for standard mess
  • Electricity/maintenance: additional Rs.200-500/month approximately
  • Annual total estimate: Rs.35,000-55,000 for hostel + mess for a year (very affordable compared to private universities)

BHU is a central government university with heavily subsidized hostel facilities. the mess food is standard north Indian fare — dal, sabzi, roti, rice, with some variety. quality varies by hostel.

check the official BHU website (bhu.ac.in) or the specific institute (IIT-BHU, BHU main campus) for the exact current fee structure for your program — fees can vary between engineering (IIT-BHU) and other programs.

BHU hostel fees — the online information is severely outdated (many pages still show pre-2020 rates). Here's what students actually pay in 2024-25.

Hostel fees 2024-25 (BHU main campus — Central University hostels):

  • Bed rent: ?8,000-12,000 per semester (depending on hostel — newer hostels are higher).
  • Mess charges: ?2,500-4,000 per month (mess committees run the food, rates vary by hostel).
  • Monthly all-in cost: Approximately ?5,000-7,000/month including food and accommodation.

IIT-BHU hostels (separate from main BHU):

  • Slightly higher: ?10,000-14,000/semester bed rent + ?4,500-5,000/month mess.
  • Total monthly: ~?6,500-8,000.

What most old answers quote (WRONG): ?1,500-2,000/semester — this was pre-2018. Fees have risen significantly.

Other charges to budget for:

  • Single occupancy room: Additional ?3,000-5,000/semester (not guaranteed — allotted by lottery/seniority).
  • Hostel registration/security deposit: One-time ?2,000-5,000 (refundable).
  • Medical facility, gymnasium, library access fees included in hostel charges.

Hostel allotment: Not guaranteed for all years. 1st year students get priority. From 2nd year onwards, apply each session — earlier applications get better rooms.

Note: Always verify current fees at bhu.ac.in/hostel — rates may have revised again for 2025-26.

Firstly, the hostel fees at BHU vary from course to course. So all I can do is give you a rough estimate through the information I got from my sister who pursued B.Sc from BHU.

Hostel Fees

  • 1st semester stood: INR 2666
  • 2nd, 4th, 6th, and 8th semester: INR 1290 (regular fee and hostel fee both)
  • 3rd, 5th, and 7th: INR 3190 (regular fee and hostel fee)

Mess Charges:

  • INR 40 for a simple diet
  • INR 60 for special
  • INR 80 for chicken

Usually, there are 2 diets a day and on Sundays, there is only one diet. But the Sunday meal is special so it is counted as a double diet. So the approximate price stands at INR 80-100 per day.

If you skip the meal or go home then you can tell Mess Maharaj and you won’t be charged.

BHU hostel fees are INR 4500 per year. Mess fees aren’t included in the above amount. Mess fees are calculated per meal. A typical meal costs around 40-50 rupees and usually meal prices range between INR 40-80. Which rounds up to around INR 2500/month. So, including the mess fee, you will be spending around INR 7,000.

As my brother used to be a student there, so let me answer this with whatever I got to know from him about the institute.

  • When making a fee payment in the beginning, the Main Faculty hostel charge was around 4000, and the MMV hostel fee was a little more.
  • Mess: 40–50/diet (+150/month service charge)
  • On weekdays, there are two diets; on Sundays, there is only one diet, but it is unique, so it is classified as a double diet.
  • So, about 80–100 rupees every day.
  • If you go home or don't want to go to mess for some reason, just inform Mess Maharaj and you will not be charged.
  • So, Roughly it will be 3000 to 4000 rupees/semester.

And, with the exception of IMS and IIT hostels, I believe that this estimate may be applied to practically all BHU hostels.
