How is IIT Kanpur mechanical?

AT
Ayushi Tiwari Posted On : April 24th, 2023
IIT Kanpur (2019)

Mechanical at IIT Kanpur is a very poorly managed branch and I am strongly against anyone joining it. Here’s why

  • There are excessively monotonous compulsory courses
  • The academics lack flexibility in terms of choice, of course,
  • The professors lack empathy and teach just for the sake of it with no real passion. They hardly motivate and praise you.
  • The placements scenario of Mechanical at IIT Kanpur is equally haywire with only a handful of companies like ITC and HUL offering mediocre packages
  • Most of the students have to resort to programming or other CS concepts to make themselves employable and secure good packages
  • Top CS companies don’t even open roles for Mechanical students.
  • The program is lacking in terms of research as well and is not interesting at all

A few options better than ME IIT Kanpur are

  • BS in Mathematics and Computing
  • Electrical Engineering or CS in a newer IIT
  • Branch change to EE or CSE which is actually very difficult.
  • A double major in CSE, which requires an excellent CPI at the end of the second year.

All in all, I will strongly condemn you for choosing ME IIT Kanpur. Let’s hope for some revision in the program in the future.

How is the mechanical engineering department in IIEST, Shibpur as compared to departments like EE and ETC (placement & research wise)?

PN
Pratyansh Nayak Posted On : October 17th, 2023
IIEST, Shibpur

I am a first year B.Tech mechanical student at IIEST Shibpur. I will try providing some information about my department.

It is one of the best departments at IIEST. The faculty members are highly qualified, and their teaching methods are really good. They are actively engaged in research, and will happily encourage your research ideas on being approached.

The department performs decently well during placement season. Last year, 61 out of 75 B.Tech mechanical students were successfully placed. Companies like Tata Steel, CESC and Hyundai visit the department, and offer good packages to students.

IIEST has been known for its excellent teaching of core branches. Its EE and mechanical branches have one of the oldest and best labs in India. You can rest assured that the mechanical branch of this college is a pretty good one.

B.Tech - Mechanical Engineering

If you are considering Mechanical at IIT Mandi, Jodhpur, Patna, Electrical at Dhanbad or newer IITs, and CSE at IIT Jammu, we recommend you to go for IIT Jodhpur for the following reasons:

  • IIT Jodhpur has a student-friendly mechanical faculty who can provide you with quality education and guidance throughout your course.
  • IIT Jodhpur offers an Industry Immersion Program (IIP) which provides students with internships from the first year itself and continues till the third year. This program can help you gain practical experience and exposure to the industry, making you industry-ready before you graduate.

AP
Aniket Patronobish Posted On : July 25th, 2023
Studied at University Institute of Engineering and Technology, Panjab University

Although the Punjab University was established as early as 1882, its UIET, the engineering department was established in 2002. Here are a few highlights pertaining to Mechanical Engineering at UIET

  • Curriculum: UIET Mechanical Engineering has a decent course structure at par with top NITs and some IITs. Exclusive subjects like Finite Element Methods,  Robotics,  Mechatronics, and Automatic Controls are taught in this branch.
  • Faculty: Most of the professors are learned and experienced although you will find some average teachers too.
  • Extracurriculars: UIET is well-known for its dynamic campus life owing to a variety of events. Students here can be seen participating in the national level events organized by the Society of Automotive Engineers(SAE) such as BAJA, Efficycle, etc. Occasionally events like AAVISHKAR and GOONJ are held in addition to other cultural and literary fests.
  • Achievements: UIET has a list of achievements the biggest is that it hosts SAE Efficycle which is a huge event. Additionally, a team from UIET went to NASA for the “Moonbuggy” project in 2013. UIET also has a record of excellent performance by Mechanical Engineers in GATE, CAT, and other Competitive Exams. The cutoffs are increasing every year.
  • Alumni: UIET has an elaborate alumni pool that can be found in big PSUs like  IOCL, BPCL, ONGC, HPCL, SAIL, Government Research Organisation, and almost every top management college.
  • Placements: Although good, UIET placements can never be at par with IITs and NITs. The department is new and still needs to grow to attract big recruiters. Currently, it’s visited by companies like Honda, HMEL, Technip, Oceaneering, Mondelez International, ZS Associates, DESL, JSW, Nestle, etc

In all, UIET focuses on the holistic development of its students thereby helping you grow as a person thanks to its lively hostel and campus life.

What is the average package in nit raipur mechanical engineering?

AM
Aditya Mishra Posted On : September 9th, 2023
B.Tech from National Institute of Technology, Raipur

As a student of Mechanical at NIT Raipur, I am sharing important placement details for this branch with you-

The average package offered to Mechanical branch last year was INR 7.56 LPA. The package offered varies according to the company which accepts you.

  • Core Jobs-
  1. In the core sector, Automobile companies like Maruti Suzuki India Limited, Tata Motors, and FIAT offer decent packages between 5.5–6 LPA.
  2. Companies like Vedanta Resources Plc offer higher packages than these automobile brands. But a large part of that amount is variable pay which depends on the performance of the individual and the company. In the end, the in-hand salary turns out to be equal or even less than the automobile brands.
  3. PSUs like Coal India Ltd, BPCL and HPCL offer really good packages of 10-12 LPA. But you can’t rely on them. BPCL and HPCL strictly allow a handful of branch toppers to appear for placements. On the other hand, Coal India Ltd. doesn’t have vacancies for mechanical engineers each year.
  • Non Core Jobs- Some software firms as well as analytics companies are open to all engineering branches. But they offer very low packages, around 3.5 to 5 LPA.

Mechanical Engineers earn comparatively less than CS/IT students. However, this branch offers more job security. Based on this data, you can figure out the current state of placements for Mechanical at NIT Raipur.

How much CGPA one must score in IIT (BHU) to change branch from mining to mechanical?

RS
Rohit Saha Posted On : June 16th, 2023
IIT BHU (2019)

The first semester at IIT BHU Mining branch has 6 subjects. All the students are required to get A/A* grades in all 4 Institute Courses sparing ED and ManuPrac.

  • Students willing to get into CSE should have CGPA >=9.80 for CSE.
  • For those interested in changing their branch to Mechanical, anywhere a CGPA of 9.2 is preferable. One must be among the top 9 students of their batch.
  • For branch change to Electrical, a CGPA>=9.6 is preferable given that you don’t have more than one A- in Institute Courses.

While filling out the branch change form, no one selects Metallurgy as an option so branch change to Metallurgy is very easy and you just need to be among the top 9.
