Which is a better choice, BITS Pilani or MNNIT Allahabad for Mechanical Engineering?
As a recent mechanical pass out from BITS Pilani, I can assure you that BITS Pilani will be a better choice for mechanical engineering. Being a reputed college, it has strong industry connections and students are placed in top firms like TATA, ISRO, Mercedes, Honda and more for internship and research opportunities.
BITS Pilani also holds a high standard in various brands with a strong alumni network across the world. It also has better infrastructure than MNNIT Allahabad, flexibility and more. The start-up aid is one of the best in the country.
Placement opportunities at BITS Pilani are also better with students grabbing packages up to INR 60.75 LPA. The top recruiters include Microsoft, Amazon, Google, Cisco and more.
Which should I choose, mechanical engineering at new IITs or engineering design at IIT Madras?
Engineering Department usually has more companies visiting for placements than IIT Roorkee and the condition is worse in new IITs. The average package is also at par with the packages of most branches.
In fact, any branch at an old and big IIT like Madras is better than CS at new IITs. the packages of CS at new IITs are on the same level as packages offered in normal branches of old IITs. Moreover, the campus life and exposure offered in big old IITs can never be compared to the new IITs which are still struggling to reach IIT standards in terms of their infrastructure and placements.
Secondly, Engineering Design is not completely mechanical, but rather a combination of electrical and mechanical. This department has the highest number of labs and assignments. and thus a lot of assignments.
Overall, the coursework pertaining to the department is full of rigor and requires much more effort than other branches. If you are ready for that kind of commitment, go for it but if you eventually want to do coding, chose an easier branch that will give you enough time to learn to code.
How are the mechanical placements at SVNIT Surat??
As per the 2022 statistics, out of 219 registered B.Tech Mechanical students, 174 were successfully placed. The highest package offered was 18.45 LPA, and the average package stood at 8.81 LPA. 3.60 LPA was the lowest package offered during that year.
Now, as a former student of the department, I would advise you to secure at least 6.5 CGPA by the end of your degree. To be safe, try for 7 CGPA and above. Try to get 8 and above in your first year, and maintain 6.5 and above in the remaining years. Scoring is comparatively easier in the first year.
To ace your technical interview round, have basic knowledge of all your Mechanical subjects. The companies might be open to 60% scorers, but the final shortlist will only contain the names of those who would’ve scored at least 65%-70% (depending on the number of applicants).
The reputable and high paying companies will have higher competition, and consequently, higher cutoffs. Have a good grasp over the core concepts of your interest, and try to participate in extracurricular activities. Keep up with the current affairs. Study with utmost dedication and sincerity.
The placements for Mechanical are top notch at SVNIT, afterall it is an NIT. But it is you who needs to be up to the mark to qualify for decent paying companies.

Placement at SVNIT Surat is great as informed by some of my friends studying there. Here are the recent placement highlights for SVNIT Surat.
- The highest package offered here is 37.50 LPA while the average CTC ranges from 4-7 LPA.
- In order to get a placement to try to secure a CGPA pointer of above 6.5 by the end of your degree. It's safe if your CGPA is 7 and above. One of the best ways is to do that, get a good pointer in the first year (8 and above), and then continue to secure above 6.5 to keep it above 7.
- Try to gain all your basic knowledge in all the mechanical subjects on point. This will surely help you out in technical interviews.
- If you truly have the interest but don't have a good CGPA pointer, then it will be very hard to qualify for placements, and you will regret it later on. Students with marks 60% above can apply, but the final shortlist will only have people with marks above 65%-70% depending on the people applied.
- Participate in a decent amount of co-curricular activities. You need to make sure that you know a lot about the core concepts about the subjects of your interest.
Obviously, the placements are great because of the NIT tag, but it will be of no use if you hold a second-class degree, with a lot of back papers. So, I would like to advise you to just focus on your studies.
How good is Thapar University for mechanical engineering? I have heard that its teacher and placement scenario is bad.
To be honest, the general scenario of Mechanical Engineering at most Indian colleges is pathetic, and rarely do core companies come for placements. Surprisingly enough, Thapar is among the few companies that are visited by core mechanical companies. So yes, Thapar University’s Mechanical Engineering is second only to IITs, NITs, and BITS. Here are a few highlights of the course
- During the 4th semester, students are given 3 projects of Creo which have no written exam. The project alone takes months to complete and students learn the whole solid modeling during the process.
- Earlier, Mechatronics was an optional subject but now it has been made compulsory in the 2nd year. The reason is its increasing scope in the future and its compulsion in papers like ESEs.
- Frequent workshops are held solely to impart knowledge and no grading is done for these.
- The Mechanical Department has some of the best faculty with highly experienced professors. Some even are Ph.D. holders from old IITs.
- The peer group is excellent because usually the ones passionate about Mechanical join this program.
- The placement scenario is decent and companies like Eicher, Honda, Maruti, Hero, Royal Enfield, etc. visit for campus placement.
- The entire 6th semester is for internships so students gain a lot of practical experience and prepare better for placements.
So Thapar University’s Mechanical Department is an excellent option if you are passionate about the field and are unable to make it into ITs, NITs, or BITS, then go for Thapar.
How is the placement for mechanical engineering from Nirma University?
Nirma University (NU) situated in Ahmedabad, Gujarat is a NAAC accredited ‘A’ grade private university. It has been ranked 131 for engineering by NIRF 2020. Nirma University provides a 4-year classroom program for B.Tech. in Mechanical Engineering.
