Branch change opportunities exist at most institutes but have stringent eligibility criteria and intense competition.
Typical requirements:
Focus on excelling in your current branch while building skills in your preferred domain through electives, MOOCs, and projects.
You can apply for the Bachelor's Degree Programme (BDP) at IGNOU which includes the BSc programme. One such course is LSE or Life Science. You need to select elective courses in Life Science first.
IGNOU has a credit-based grading system. This requires you to complete 32 credits in a single academic year. This totals 96 credits in 3 years.
For the first year 16 credits will be from foundation courses. Other credits will be from your elective courses.
For a major degree you need to have 48 credits from the subject you wish to major in.
In the 3rd year it’s decided whether you have a BSc (zoo) or BSc (bot). This depends on the choice of your subjects.
BSc in Biology also required lab courses. These constitute about 25% of your marks and attendance is compulsory.
Take a second elective from the rest (maths, physics, chemistry) such that it carries at least 8 credits.
If you are still having difficulty understanding the credits visit the university’s official website.
PTU and GNDU both are well-reputed colleges that have unique strengths and weaknesses. While PTU is a bit flexible in terms of exam pattern, GNDU follows the rule of a year back. The choice of the college also depends on the course you will be studying. Usually, PTU fares better in most cases.
Ultimately, it all depends on the college or university campus you are taking admission. Most colleges in Punjab have a pathetic academic ambiance. So go for the main campus of any university else look for a decent college in your area.
In all, GNDU offers better placement opportunities provided that you are on the main campus.
Both the PTU and GNDU are different in their terms and have their advantages and disadvantages. The GNDU is strict with the examination rules, whereas at PTU rules regarding examinations are quite relaxed in comparison. Choosing PTU or GNDU also depends on which course you are choosing. For some courses, PTU is better, while GNDU is better for others. Here is a brief highlight of the placement statistics for PTU and GNDU.
| Parameters | GNDU | PTU |
| Average CTC | 3 LPA | 3-4 LPA |
| Highest CTC | 13.50 LPA | 12 LPA |
| Major recruiters | Chegg, Amazon, TCS, HDFC | IBM, Wipro, Airtel |
At last, everything depends on the college you want to opt for. If you are coming to Punjab from any of the places they don’t. The private colleges are not that good in the state. Therefore, don’t fall for the private colleges of Punjab.
For any admission, apply for the university campus and not for the private colleges. Instead, take admission in your city or the native place.
This answer is based on the assumption that you are enquiring about the highest package for Civil Engineering at IIT Kanpur. Well, the highest I have heard is around INR 36 LPA. However, branch-wise placement data is not available for IIT Kanpur so the recent highest package might have changed.
In reality, landing a 36 Lakhs package is next to impossible in Civil Engineering and the person who got it probably got placed in a banking or investment firm. His exceptional achievement stems from his top-notch skills in probability and statistics.
The placements for Civil Engineering are mostly based on work experience and initially, you will be offered minimal pay.
Don’t get disheartened if you are planning to get employed in the civil engineering field, the initial payment is little, but this field is all about experience. After a couple of years, you will be earning more than your CS batchmates. Another option is to get into the public sector which provides good pay too.
Yes, XLRI HR students do get placed in other fields as well. Although such placements are fewer in number.
Here is a sector-wise analysis of XLRI Placements 2021.
| Sector | Number of Offers |
| Consulting | 90 |
| BFSI | 15-20 |
| IT/E-Commerce | 74 |
| HR/Sales and Marketing | 62-65 |
| General Management | 32 |
Placements usually depend on your CV, your work experience, academics, participation in events, and other credentials.
When choosing between a computer science or statistics perspective for ML, it's important to consider your goals. Statisticians have high standards for theoretical guarantees and usually publish in journals. It may take 5-6 years after initial conception for a method to be accepted and used. On the other hand, computer science and ML move quickly with conferences as the primary venues. Methods and code quickly spread, and people start using them.
In general, computer science is considered a better choice for ML than statistics departments. If you're considering the ISI Machine Intelligence Unit, note that it's mostly made up of statisticians who research fuzzy logic and publish in stats or application-specific journals. Their papers don't usually appear in flagship ML venues like NIPS, ICML, or KDD.
When deciding between a CS or statistics Ph.D., also consider your employment options after graduation. The majority of people in top Indian labs like MSR, Google, and XRCI are CS PhDs, if not 100%. Statistics PhDs, on the other hand, typically work in actuarial firms or investment banks, which have different work objectives.
One of my friends graduated from NIT Trichy. According to him, in this age of Information Technology and software boom, very few people are there who stick to their branches.
If you go for jobs in coding and software as most of the students do then you can be offered higher salary packages. This might be the reason why most students opt for jobs in the corporate sector.

The procedure to change your branch varies depending on which year you are currently in. Check the procedures below:
First year:
It must be noted that if you have got a seat under the tuition fee waiver (TFW) scheme then you can't change the branch you are allotted.
Second/third year:
Your branch change totally depends on the vacancy of seats in the branch you want to go for. Generally, some reserved category seats which are remaining vacant get filled at this time because usually all unreserved category seats are already filled after the first year. So, it all depends on your luck!
