Why is the cutoff for computer science in Thapar lower than that of NIT Jalandhar?

AA
Ayush Agarwal Posted On : December 3rd, 2022
B.Tech. in Computer Science and Engineering, Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Institute of Technology, Jalandhar (NITJ) (Graduated 2020)

The cutoff for computer science in Thapar has seen a fall in figures. This is because of the decrease in the fame of this college. There are so many better and popular institutes that people usually don’t consider Thapar as their first choice.

Even big companies prefer students from IITs, BITS or DTU. Students themselves opt for IIT because of its tag. They know the IIT tag will always be a boon for them.

The general decrease in its popularity has resulted in lower cutoffs and the situation seems to be worsening over the years to come.

S
Sarvesh Posted On : February 12th, 2021
IIT Bhubaneswar (2019)

Photonics is one of the high-tech subjects that is evolved hugely in the last 20 years. It has applications in the areas of communications, computing, medicine, industry, defense, and entertainment. Having my friends from CUSAT enables me to provide you some valuable insights into the course.

MSc Photonics in CUSAT is a good course to do. It is emerging fastly as mentioned before and has a huge potential.

Integrated Course: One of the big advantages of choosing Photonics in CUSAT is that it is a 5-year integrated program compared to other institutes. This helps in dive deeper into the field of Photonics.

Interesting Electives: Another highlight of the program is the choice of electives they provide with the course.

Research Orientation: Students are subjected to a research atmosphere right from the start through the mini projects in the first and second semesters.

Good for Competitive Exams: The course is more inclined towards photonics and includes some important and interesting subjects like nuclear physics, etc. Having exposure to these subjects will help a lot while preparing for competitive exams.

Course Fee & Faculties: The college has excellent facilities and experienced faculty to guide you. The course fee is also quite reasonable.

Placements: When it comes to placements even though there are no direct campus placements many students are placed in many top companies like Varroc, HELLA, Valeo, Tech Mahindra, etc. Apart from the placements, many students opt for Ph.D. programs in many abroad institutes.

In short MSc Photonics at CUSAT is a wonderful course and you can definitely choose the program if you are interested in it.

How is the integrated physics MSC course at IIT Roorkee?

SG
Shruti Gupta Posted On : April 12th, 2023
Studied at Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee (2020)

Academically, the MSc Physics course at IIT Roorkee is dynamic. Some of the courses have repeated topics but for someone who is really into physics, the curriculum definitely suits his taste.

The research work conducted by the professors covers vast topics like string theory, theoretical high energy physics, quantum optics, fiber optics and lasers, nuclear physics, astrophysics, nano-materials, and condensed matter.

The lab facilities of this department are very lucrative for working with quantum optics, low-temperature superconductivity, functional materials, and lasers. The overall program lays more emphasis on experimental physics. The research enthusiasts get excellent research work in top research institutes during their summer internships which will enhance their learning experience tenfold. Students also get to visit famous places in India, Germany, the US, Australia, etc. and also publish great works. Some of the most common places include IISc, Bangalore, BARC, PRL, TIFR, IUCAA, SINP, and IIT in India whereas CERN, and Max Planck Institutes in Germany, Wisconsin, and Georgetown in the US amongst others.

Many consider the department a bit laid back with a less structured curriculum. However, real enthusiasts have been able to convert this weakness into strength by not solely relying on the curriculum but exploring much more. The Physics Journal Club and the number of papers published by students in PRD, PRL, MNRAS, CjP, etc. are a testament to that.

Despite very less scope in India, IIT Roorkee has been able to carry Physics to a great extent. The program needs a little revision, only the ones who are truly Physics lovers can pursue this course.

How is Fergusson College Pune for BSc in physics?

RS
Riya Sodhi Posted On : September 28th, 2021
Studied at Fergusson College,Pune (2018)

If physics is your passion, and you genuinely want to learn, this is not the place for you. One of my friends studied here and these are some things he mentioned.

  • The faculty is good but they have limited course material. You would not feel like you have learned much.
  • Most students take up physics in their final years because they know they can easily memorize the course material and pass. This is just so that they can improve their grades.
  • Mugging up theories is definitely not how someone can learn science.
  • They don’t have a real interest in the subject anyway and they would be your peers.
  • The system at Fergusson is not great and you wouldn’t want to attend classes as it would not matter and you will pass your exams regardless.

If you are only looking for a college life minus the studies and want to have some fun with fests and events, by all means, join Fergusson because marks and knowledge are secondary here.

Is it safe to join a B.Stat at ISI Kolkata (I'm a non-Bengali student)?

NK
Natasha Kaur Posted On : September 22nd, 2021
Studied at Indian Statistical Institute (2019)

Kolkata is one of India's safest cities. This city attracts visitors from all over India and the world. That's why it's known as the "City of Joy." Bengalis are extremely friendly.

ISI Kolkata is known to have the most sought-after institute in Statistical expertise. It has one of the best faculty members in India. Out of which, 30 professors were published in Standford University.

Moreover, you have got a seat in B.Stat which is considered one of the toughest examinations for Mathematics in Asia. You should base your judgement on the basis of a stereotype as letting go of this opportunity will be a wrong decision.

Almost 50% of the batch consists of Non-Bengalis here at ISI Kolkata. There is no need to worry as the institute also has a rigid anti-ragging policy.

Which university will be best for statistics University of Allahabad or University of Lucknow?

RS
Reshmi Sen, Posted On : November 8th, 2021
studied at University of Allahabad (2018)

Both University of Allahabad and University of Lucknow are good in their own ways. They also consist of their fair share of flaws.

Here’s mentioning some facts about both these colleges I got to know online:

  • The faculty of both colleges are really good. They are highly experienced and extremely cooperative.
  • Subjects like statistics, geology, zoology, astronomy are considered good by students at University of Lucknow.
  • Both have a strong alumni network.
  • Many consider Allahabad University better than Lucknow University due to its central status.

But after considering everything, you need to keep one thing in mind that the institution is not the major factor for your success. It is your dedication and hard work that will help you reach your goal.

Wait for the cutoff lists to get released. If you clear the cutoff for each of these colleges, then your preference order should be as follows.

The required cutoff for North campus colleges is usually higher than the south campus colleges. You can choose the college based on your cutoff.

Is a BSc (general) distance learning IGNOU student eligible for giving the UPSC-CSE, IFoS, IIT-JAM and CAT?

DK
Deepak Kumar Posted On : November 1st, 2022
M.A. in Public Administration, Indira Gandhi National Open university (IGNOU) (Graduated 2019)

In order to get admission to the MSc program of IITs, you have to appear in the IIT JAM examination. This requires BSc Hons or a major in Physics, Chemistry or Mathematics.

IGNOUs BSc major program has an option of a Physics major(48 credits of physics course out of total 96 credit for major in physics), Chemistry major(40 credits for major), Mathematics major or a BSc (General). So you can apply for IIT-JAM only if you have a

  • BSc major degree in Physics, Chemistry or Mathematics

  • BSc General degree with combinations of Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics.

You are required to necessarily have a minimum 55% aggregate in the BSc program.
