Is doing B.Tech Engineering Physics from IIT Delhi any good?

G
GalacticPhantom Posted On : April 2nd, 2026

DO NOT JOIN ANY ENGINEERING PHYSICS COURSE! At IIT, not a single company comes for the engineering profile. IT companies are the only ones that recruit these students. If you manage to get a placement on campus, your life will be okay. You’ll be earning a minimum of 5 LPA. But if you don’t secure a job, your life will be challenging.

Here are the options left for you:

  • BARC: Some might say you can join BARC. But remember, you need a minimum CGPA of 6.0. You’ll be competing with MSc Physics students as well. The number of vacancies is limited, usually around 30 each year. The BARC interview is one of the toughest among all science student interviews.
  • MTech: You might consider pursuing MTech. To do that, you’ll need to appear for GATE. Cracking GATE is no easy feat. After BTech in Engineering Physics, you can opt for MTech in CSE, Solid State Physics, or Applied Optics.
  • Masters from Abroad: Many students choose to pursue an MS abroad after BTech. However, this MS is typically not in Engineering Physics; it’s in Computer Science. So, the demand clearly lies in IT, not in Engineering Physics.
  • PhD: In the USA, you can pursue a PhD in Physics directly after BTech. But consider the job options available after a PhD in Physics. The choices are limited.

Is it worth doing a B.Tech Biotechnology and Biochemical Engineering from IIT Delhi or not? What are its placement records and whats your experience with this college so far?

S
SaltySeaSloth Posted On : April 2nd, 2026

I’m in the IIT Delhi Biotechnology and Biochemical Engineering program, and it’s been quite an experience so far! The coursework is challenging, and we have regular tests, which can be overwhelming. The fees are around 1,19,000 per semester, so it’s not cheap, but the campus life makes up for it.

There’s so much to do, from clubs like drama and photography to big fests like RDV and TRYST. The demand for biotech skills is increasing, especially with health crises around the world. I’m still looking for placement opportunities, and I’ve heard they’re solid for our branch. If you’re passionate about this field, IIT Delhi is a great choice.

What is the total approx fees of IIT Delhi for B.Tech Material Science Engineering??

A
AstralPerusal Posted On : April 2nd, 2026

This was the Semester 1 breakdown of fees for UG students who took admission in 2023–24:

While this includes adjustments for JOSAA counseling fees and some one-time security deposits, it excludes mess charges. The breakdown for the second semester was as follows (General/OBC with Annual Family income > ? 5 Lakh):

  • ? 1,05,750/- for Tuition & Exams
  • ? 26,800/- for Mess
  • ? 13,250/- for Hostel accommodation

This comes to a grand total of ? 1,45,800/-.

Here are some screenshots from the prospectus to clarify: The biggest chunk of fees is, of course, the tuition fee (as shown above).

(I don’t even know what the Student Distress Fund Scheme is or that it even exists!)

Additionally, there are multiple scholarship opportunities that arise once you are in IIT Delhi, a topic that definitely deserves a separate post.

Should I go for B.Tech Electrical Engineering in IIT Delhi or B.Tech Industrial Engineering in IIT Kharagpur?

S
ShortbreadShaman Posted On : April 2nd, 2026

Both IIT Delhi for B.Tech in Electrical Engineering and IIT Kharagpur for B.Tech in Industrial Engineering offer unique experiences. IIT Delhi has a strong faculty and a rigorous curriculum that encourages independent problem-solving, but the campus life can feel a bit cramped due to smaller rooms. In contrast, IIT Kharagpur might have a more relaxed atmosphere with a diverse range of extracurricular activities, though the teaching quality is reported to be less impressive.

If you’re passionate about electrical engineering and prefer a more competitive environment, IIT Delhi would be the better choice. However, if you value campus life and want to explore industrial engineering in a slightly more laid-back setting, IIT Kharagpur could be a great fit. Personally, I’d lean towards IIT Delhi for its reputation and focus on core engineering subjects.

What is the total cost for B.Tech + M.Tech Chemical Engineering in IIT Delhi??

C
ChromaticJingle Posted On : April 2nd, 2026

I graduated from IIT Bombay in 2020 with a BTech degree in Chemical Engineering. Based on that experience, I can provide some insights into the cost of studying at IITs. Most IITs have similar costs, so this should give you a good idea. Here’s the breakdown of the expenses:

  • Tuition Fee (Academic Fee): 1 Lakh Per Semester
  • Total Tuition Fee: 1 Lakh Per Semester x 2 Semesters Per Year x 4 Years = 8 Lakh For 4 Years
  • Variable Fee (Academic Fee): 8k To 10k Per Semester
  • Total Variable Fee: Average 10k Per Semester x 2 Semesters Per Year x 4 Years = 80k For 4 Years
  • Hostel Fee: 12k To 15k Per Semester
  • Total Hostel Fee: Average 15k Per Semester x 2 Semesters Per Year x 4 Years = 120k For 4 Years
  • Mess Fee (Different For Different Hostels): 20k To 30k Per Semester
  • Total Mess Fee: Average 25k Per Semester x 2 Semesters Per Year x 4 Years = 200k For 4 Years
  • TOTAL FEES FOR 4 YEARS = (8 + 0.8 + 1.2 + 2) Lakh = 12 Lakh

So, on average, the total cost of studying at IITs would be around 12 lakhs for 4 years (BTech Degree).

SleepySealSoap Posted On : April 1st, 2026

IIT Delhi's B.Tech in Electrical Engineering (Power and Automation) offers a strong tie between core engineering roles and coding, making it attractive for diverse career paths. With an average package of around 15 lakhs and the potential for internships yielding up to 25 lakhs, it has excellent placement opportunities. Meanwhile, IIT Kharagpur's B.Tech in Mechanical Engineering boasts an even higher average package of 20-25 lakhs, and a solid internship program with around 60-70% placement success. Both colleges have robust placement stats, but IIT Kharagpur edges ahead with slightly better averages and a wider range of internship offers. If you're inclined towards a blend of coding and engineering, choose IIT Delhi; if you prefer a robust mechanical background with better placement prospects, go for IIT Kharagpur.

How is B.Tech Textile Technology branch at IIT Delhi? What about its placement in 2025/26??

M
MelancholyMaze Posted On : April 1st, 2026

I’m currently in the B.Tech Textile Technology branch at IIT Delhi and honestly, it's been a good experience so far. The faculty ratio is around 15:1, which is pretty impressive. Most professors are PhD holders from IITs, so you get quality education. The curriculum is manageable, and while passing the exams isn't too tough, scoring high can be a challenge.

Placement-wise, over 90% of us get placed, and companies like Amazon and Google recruit here. The highest package is around 2.5 crore LPA, which is mind-blowing! For 2025/26, I feel confident about landing a good job.

Is it worth doing a B.Tech Electrical Engineering from IIT Delhi or not? What are its placement records and whats your experience with this college so far?

DaringDragon Posted On : April 1st, 2026

I’m currently in my first year of B.Tech in Electrical Engineering at IIT Delhi, and honestly, it has been an incredible experience so far. I’ve always been passionate about electrical circuits and machines, so getting into this program was a dream come true for me. The faculty here are super knowledgeable, and I appreciate that they encourage us to think critically and solve problems on our own instead of just spoon-feeding us information. The placement records are impressive too; around 88% of students got placed in-campus this year, which is a huge relief. While the fees are on the higher side, I believe the education and opportunities we get here are worth it. Overall, I think it’s definitely worth pursuing this course at IIT Delhi!
