How do I prepare for general studies in IES?

SD
Samrat Dhar Posted On : January 14th, 2021
BTech ECE from NIT Mizoram (2018)

The GS paper in ESE is very important and can be crucial for determining your rank. Here is the list of topics from the syllabus and preparation strategy.

Engineering Mathematics and Numerical Analysis - Made Easy Mathematics book. This contains a lot of solved problems for practice.

  • Also, practice questions from previous year papers of both ESE and GATE. If you are able to solve GATE level questions then ESE level questions feel quite easy.
  • This topic is highly scoring and one of the reasons why Electrical students score more. They have this topic in their technical syllabus too.

Engineering Aptitude - Made Easy Aptitude book to learn some new tricks and shortcuts for faster solving. This is a fairly easy and high scoring topic.

Material Science -

  • A very important topic because of its technical nature. It is also a bit easier to read and memorize because of its technical nature.
  • According to one of my seniors, the notes given by Sunil Tiwari (Made Easy faculty) Sir is best for this topic and covers all important aspects.
  • Material Science has some topics from Mechanical and Civil Engineering, you can follow the Made Easy books and notes for these topics.

General Principles of Design, Drawing, and Importance of Safety - You can follow any standard textbook from Made Easy/ACE or IES Master or class notes. Visualizing things plays a very important role to achieve success in this topic. You only need theory to learn definitions, technical terms, and formulas.

Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) and Basics of Energy & Environment- Saurabh Sir and AP Singh Sir’s (Made Easy Faculty) note is enough to prepare for these two topics.

Basics of Project Management, Standards, and Quality practices in production, construction, maintenance, and services- Any standard textbook from Made Easy/ACE or IES Master or class notes will serve the purpose. Students from the Electronics branch score well on these topics.

Current Affairs - You do not need to focus a lot on current affairs. Be aware of the things happening around you. Instead of reading the entire newspaper install news apps like Inshorts or Jagran Josh

Ethics and values in the Engineering profession – You can follow the Lexicon Ethics Book but this subject is logical and there is no need for any book as such. Just be logical and think for yourself what’s ethical and what’s not.

Lastly, constant revision throughout the year is essential. You should go through the entire syllabus at least once a month. For GS preparation group study can be also helpful.

How is Sharda University for CSE?

RR
Rashmi Rao Posted On : June 2nd, 2021
B.Tech in Computer Science and Engineering, Sharda University (2017)

One of my friends studied at Sharda University and according to him, it was the biggest regret of his life. He pointed out some good and bad things about the college, which I will be sharing with you.

There is no ragging and the infrastructure is pretty good. It is the only thing good about the college.

The university has many flaws like -

  1. The crowd and the overall exposure are not good.
  2. The tests conducted at Sharda are extremely easy and you do not need to study for more than a day before the exam.
  3. A GPA of 8+ can be easily scored, yet a majority of students are stuck around a GPA of 5 to 7.
  4. The university has attendance criteria of 75% which is very strict. For students who travel via Sharda bus or metro from Delhi, it is very difficult to keep up with this.
  5. The administration of the college is not good either. The complaints are mostly ignored.
  6. Many workshops are conducted but the students are not able to attend them because of the attendance criteria.
  7. The hostels are in pretty bad condition too, so, it is better to opt for PGs or Private Hostels.
  8. The faculty is not enthusiastic about teaching or researching in their field.
  9. In the first semester, a lot of time is wasted in learning Physics, Maths, Chemistry, Moral Science, EVS, Multimedia, AutoCAD, Mechanical in your B.Tech CSE. None of these subjects are related to the branch.

If you scored badly in JEE or any other competitive exam but are willing to improve yourself and do not see any other options available, then you can join Sharda University.

What is the expected cutoff for the Institute of Technology, Nirma University?

AA
Aarti Ahuja Posted On : March 16th, 2023
LLB From Nirma University

The Institute of Technology, Nirma University, commonly known as Nirma University, admits students to its undergraduate engineering programs based on the JEE Main score. The cutoff for admission to these programs at Nirma University varies each year and depends on several factors, including the difficulty level of the exam, the number of applicants, and the availability of seats in each program.

Based on the previous year's cutoff trends, to get admission to Nirma University, a candidate should score a JEE Main rank within the top 5,000-7,000. However, the cutoff score may vary based on the candidate's category, program of interest, and the total number of seats available in that program.

It's important to note that meeting the cutoff score is only one of the eligibility criteria for admission to Nirma University. The institute considers other factors such as the candidate's academic performance, the number of applicants for a program, and the reservation policies, among others, for final admission decisions.

What is the situation at IIM Kozhikode due to Kerala floods?

RS
Rituraj Singhal Posted On : February 11th, 2021
Studied at Indian Institute of Management Kozhikode (2020)

Unlike the other parts of Kerala, IIM Kozhikode was left mostly unscathed owing to its remarkable architecture and altitude. Some of the people I know who have graduated from there have said that the floods have left them deep emotional scars.

The Social Service Group of the institute successfully distributed funds, packed food, clothes, blankets, bed sheet, sanitary napkins, and other required amenities, with the help of faculty, students, and alumni.

The helpful acts included the following.

  • The institute lent its effort in reaching out to over 1000 families and 18 relief camps. They have tried their best to help the people affected by the disaster.
  • They were able to lend a helping hand to the Chattamangalam Relief Camp. They could provide 50 kg rice and 100 mosquito-repelling coils.
  • Providing 500 men’s garments, 500 women’s garments, 50 blankets, 50-bed sheets to the Wayanad Bicycle Club.
  • Providing 282 biscuit packs, 259 sanitary napkins, packs of milk, 33 juice boxes, Maggi packs, 160 rusk packs, 30 coils to the people of Calicut and Chengannur Area.
  • 40 packs of biscuits to the Kozhikode district
  • Distribution of large sets of garments for women which include innerwear, maxi, t-shirts for boys in the area of Mavoor.
  • 50 sets of detergents, Dettol, mops, and brooms to the Kunnamangalam AUP School.
  • 213 packs of biscuits, 275 sanitary napkins, and others including sugar, juice, chocolate packets, and chips were provided for Nilambur Relief Camp.

The student community of strength over 800 worked hard to make the lives easier of the people affected by the flood. The institution did its best to reach out to the people not so fortunate.

AS
Aditi Sinha Posted On : August 31st, 2023
B.Tech from National Institute of Technology, Patna (2020)

These are some of the good things about NIT Patna that might convince you to become a part of this amazing college-

  • Location- NITP is located on the banks of the Ganga which gives it positive vibes.
  • Infrastructure- The labs and study halls have all the facilities. The offices are always there to help the students and staff. The central library has a good collection of competitive, academic, and general books. It has high-speed Wi-Fi and AC.
  • Transportation- Patna is well connected to various parts of India through road, rail, and air. You will always get an auto from outside the campus gate.
  • Hostel- First-year boys get separate hostels. However, the rooms are two/ three-seater. This might be an inconvenience to some. Second year onwards, you will get Brahmaputra hostel which is new and good. It is a two-seater. Students from Patna itself might not get a hostel seat.
  • Senior-Junior Interaction- The seniors are very supportive and friendly with their juniors. You’ll have a tech senior, your immediate senior with the same roll no. as you. This person will help you throughout your college life.
  • Clubs- The college has cultural and technical clubs. The Civil department clubs are CESC and IWWA. HackSlash is a great club that conducts events and sessions on tech and coding.
  • Placements- NIT Patna placements are getting higher with time. As of now, a CTC of 52 LPA has been offered in the Computer Science branch. Even EE, Civil, and Mechanical branches are getting good placements with median CTC touching 7.5 to 7.85 LPA. Core placements are improving as well.

NIT Patna will offer you facilities, opportunities, a healthy environment, and a platform to showcase your talent. But your success depends on the level of effort you put in.

What are your thoughts on IIT Madras offering a bachelor's degree/diploma online?

SH
Shraya Hazra Posted On : July 20th, 2021
B.Tech Mechanical Engineering & Mathematics, Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati (2020)

It is a full-time degree or diploma and so it will have more value than online. But if we compare IIT Madras’ online degree or diploma with any other college’s then it is better.

The duration of the course is 3 years. The mode of training is online, the lectures are mostly recorded and partly live sessions.

Whether the course will be good or not that depends on what subject you are planning to pursue. If you opt for a subject related to technology, then it is not a good option. This is because technology cannot be learned through books or audiovisual. It requires you to be present in the field to gain experience and knowledge.

Why is IIIT Delhi not better than NSIT?

AB
Akriti Banerjee Posted On : August 21st, 2023
lives in New Delhi

Although IIIT Delhi has a better curriculum, academic environment, and even placement scenario, the opportunities offered at NSUT Delhi are no less. The average package of IIIT Delhi 2023 placements stood at INR 23.72 LPA while the median package of NSUT Delhi is INR 16 LPA.

However, these figures do not mean much for a fresher because IT giants like Google have the same recruitment procedure for every college. Students from all colleges be it a top NIT, IIIT-D, NSUT, or a local college were given equal chances to appear for its interview.

Surprisingly, even NSUT Delhi gets enough offers from Google so placements have nothing to do with the curriculum you have studied. NSUT students are all-round coders whereas IIIT Delhi students are proficient only in competitive coding. Even the number of students getting into IIMs is more for NSUT than IIIT Delhi.

So, NSUT is much better than IIIT Delhi because of the crowd quality and education.

NSIT organizes an amazing cultural fest and also has many societies, clubs, and sports facilities. Overall, I will suggest freshers who are certain of pursuing a career in research in computers or communication, signal processing, etc to join IIIT Delhi but if you are uncertain about your inclination, choose NSIT Delhi. It will guide you!

Is MDI better than the new IIMs and baby IIMs?

ON
Om Naik Posted On : February 21st, 2023
PGDM in Finance, Welingkar Institute of Management Development and Research (Graduated 2019)

Yes, MDI Gurgaon is definitely better than baby IIMs in almost every aspect. Some major points of comparison between them are

Fees: The fees of the PGDM program at MDI Gurgaon are ?23.47 Lakhs (Total Fees) whereas the MBA fees of new IIMs are around 16-23 Lakhs. So MDI has higher fees.

Ranking: MDI Gurgaon ranks 13th by NIRF whereas the new IIMs come only after that.

Establishment: Almost all the new IIMs were established after 2007, whereas MDI has a great legacy because of being established as early as 1973.

Placements: The placement scenario is much better at MDI than at newer IIMs. I have drawn a comparison between MDI placement statistics and IIM Trichy, one of the best among the new IIMs.

Particulars

MDI

IIM Trichy

Highest salary

INR 1.14 CPA

INR 34 LPA

Average salary

INR 26.65 LPA

INR 17.01 LPA

Top recruiters

Microsoft, Google, HCL, Adobe

Amazon, Dell, Nomura

The table clearly proves MDI is a winner in the placement race when it comes to new IIMs. In fact in all aspects MDI wins the battle so should be the preference over new IIMs.
