One of my friends is currently in his first year of M.tech CS at ISI Kolkata. Here are some crucial insights regarding the academics and placements according to his experience.
Academics:
- If you have a CS background in your under graduation too, then all subjects in the first year will be mostly repetition for you. You can also check the exact list on the ISI website. However, many people with a CS background say that they have learned things in a much-refined way.
- In the second year, you finally get to choose subjects based on your interest which will help you in your final thesis.
- ISI is quite famous for cryptography but you can also find good thesis projects in prestigious fields like Machine learning, Image processing, Algorithms, VLSI, cognitive science, etc. Also, you get good guidance in all of these.
Placements:
ISI is particularly famous for statistics. So, most companies coming for placements offer Data science profiles. Very few companies would be offering developer job roles. So regarding the placements, it’s the best place to grab data scientist roles with lucrative packages. In the recent placement highlights, the average and highest CTC offered was 19.80 LPA and 42 LPA.

How was your interview experience at IIIT Delhi for an M.Tech in Computer Science?
This is how my interview at IIIT Delhi for M.Tech CSE went-
At first, we took an MCQ based aptitude test. The allotted time was divided section-wise. After that, around 160 people were shortlisted for an interview, and 6-8 panels were formed. Every panel asked a different set of questions.
I was asked about my background, and the reason for doing an M.Tech. Then the professor asked me for the subjects I was confident in. I chose DS and Algorithms. I had to come up with a suitable data structure for a situation. I had to also write a code for the same. The professor kept on modifying the constraints, and I modified the solutions accordingly.
It was an intense discussion. At the end, I was asked if I had any questions. Finally, he told me to go. Some panels asked questions on OS, DBMS, CN. Some candidates were even asked questions based on their current job.
Though I wasn’t selected, the interview experience was quite good for me.
What should I choose between an MTech CS course from IIIT Bangalore or an ME CS course from BITS Pilani?
- According to my experience, you should go with ME CS from BITS Pilani. It will provide you with the latest research facilities and industry collaborations that will be helpful in your future career endeavours.
- BITS Pilani focuses on practical learning with real-world projects. You will also get better placement opportunities upon course completion as BITS Pilani has an excellent placement cell for its CS students.
- IIIT Bangalore is still considered to be in the developing stage while the diverse community with vibrant campus life enhance the overall learning experience.
- BITS Pilani also has a very strong alumni network that aids in promising career prospects in the field of computer science.
Should I choose IIT Guwahati or IIT Hyderabad for an M.Tech in CSE?
If you are planning to pursue M.Tech in Computer Science, it is highly recommended that you consider IIT Hyderabad over IIT Guwahati. Some of the reasons are given below:
- The data provided by the institute indicates that almost all students from the Computer Science department at IIT Hyderabad get placed in the first phase of placements, which is exclusive to the CSE branch. This is a significant advantage over IIT Guwahati.
