How is the MA in psychology distance course at IGNOU? What are the job prospects of it compared to a regular distance course?

AP
Arijit Pathak Posted On : October 13th, 2022
Master of Arts in Clinical Psychology, Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU)

Admission is available in two sessions: July and January. The university supplies the study material, which is fine. It follows a year system, with 7 courses (6 theory and 1 practical) in the first year and 6 in the second year (3 theory, 1 practical, 1 internship requiring at least 240 hours total, and 1 project/research (can only be done if you pass the Research Methodology and Statistics subjects in the first year)). There are three optional courses to choose from in the second year of IGNOU's MA in Psychology.

  • Clinical psychiatry
  • Psychology of counseling
  • Psychology in the workplace

Each has different job prospects, and it is believed you will be familiar with them because it is clear from their names what fields they represent. The procedure is extremely simple. Obtain admission, complete assignments, and register for the exam at the desired exam center. After passing the exams, which can take between three and six years. Following that, you will be given a mark sheet and a provisional certificate. To obtain an original degree, you must wait at least six to twelve months for the convocation to be held by IGNOU, and you must pay a nominal fee of Rs 600-900 for registration and certificate.

If you are unable to attend the convocation, your certificate will be mailed to your home address. However, the practicals and viva-voce are an exception because some of the exams were conducted recently (depending on the Regional/Study center). It is acceptable in the first year, but if it occurs in the second year, it may cause a hindrance for higher education because the certificates may not be available at the right time for seeking admission, (seems IGNOU is nowadays quickly distributing the provisional and statement of marks. The good news is that you will receive it directly to your home via post after completing the course). The learner must submit assignments for all theory papers, and writing them will take a lot of time, but it will be beneficial for a passionate learner of psychology.

If you want to pursue this MA in Psychology from IGNOU, you must fully commit to this course because the field of psychology is vast. So working while pursuing this course may not be the best option because it may require 3 months of internship, pure research work, and an ocean of writing work.

Regarding the job prospects, as a student of the specific course, you hope to win the UGC NET/JRF and continue your education to become a lecturer. If I get the JRF, I plan to pursue an M Phil in Clinical Psychology and become a licensed clinical practitioner in the mental health field.

MA in English Literature , University of Delhi (Graduated 2016)

It’s not too late to prepare for the entrance exam MA in English program at Delhi University even in the 3 years of your bachelor's. Just be regular at it and keep some important points in mind.

Be well versed in your BA course- Read your text thoroughly and in various aspects. Read diverse critical essays on each text to attain a multiplicity of perspectives. In case you are graduating from a different subject, refer to the BA(Hons.) DU syllabus.

Read History of English literature- Knowing the roots is a basic step. To get an idea of the basic chronology and ages refer to these books:

  1. A short history of English literature by Sir Ifor Evans.

  2. A brief history of English literature by Peck & Coyle.

Indian Literature in English- To get enough knowledge of the same refers to these books:

  1. A concise history of Indian literature in English by Arvind Mehrotra.

  2. Indian writing in English (4th edition) by K.R. Srinivasa.

Gain enough knowledge of literary theory & criticism- For this read:

  1. Beginning theory by Peter Barry

  2. Literary theory by Terry Eagleton

Update yourself with award-winning authors- This is not difficult if you read beyond your syllabus. Some of the awards to keep track of are:

  • The Nobel prize

  • The booker prize

  • Sahitya Akademi Award

  • Gyaanpith (for Indian regional literature translated into English)

  • Pulitzer Prize

Apart from these strategies, I suggest becoming an avid reader and reading beyond your syllabus, and also practicing writing book reviews. All this will help you make a way for the DU English Literature program.

What should I study to clear NIMHANS entrance exam for M Phil in clinical psychology?

SG
Sangita Ghose Posted On : October 6th, 2021
MPhil Clinical Psychology, National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (2018)

To clear the NIMHANS entrance exam for M. Phil in clinical psychology, you need to be thorough with the basics of the syllabus of a PG in psychology either be MA in psychology or MSc in psychology, especially cognitive psychology, biological basis of behavior, abnormal psychology, social psychology research methodology, and all the different branches of psychology from PG level.

My friend is currently pursuing the M.Phil course in clinical psychology at NIMHANS. According to his experience, clearing M.Phil entrance is just one part of the game.

You will have to be passionate enough to take the pressures of having to report to different people, being able to work together with people from different disciplines, and being able to be resilient with minor or major put-offs.

Getting used to the work hours is very exhausting, including Saturdays and at the same time there are no holidays or you cannot leave clinical work while preparing for exams, so the clinical work and patients have the highest priority at this place.

In exchange, you will have the best people guiding you and the day-to-day privilege of working with the best people in the field, so you should be able to manage both academics and clinical work. Not to repeat but you should be mentally strong and constantly enthusiastic about what you are doing and be able to reach out to people when you have difficulties.

In order to clear the NIMHANS entrance exam for M.Phil. In clinical psychology, you should be thorough in the basics of the syllabus prescribed for a PG in psychology. Consider studying topics like cognitive psychology, Biological basis of behavior, abnormal psychology, social psychology, and research methodology.

In reality, clearing the MPhil entrance is just a small step of the whole process. You should be mentally strong enough and have the ability to report to different people and tolerate their valid criticism. You will have to learn to work together with people from different disciplines, develop a passion for your patients, and spend long working hours including Saturdays. The bright side is, that you will be working with some of the highly intellectual people who will guide you to manage both academics and clinical work.

I am sure, eventually, you will realize that all the efforts were worth the result!

IIIT Lucknow is one of the best among all IIITs under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) Program of the Government of India. A few key aspects of IIIT Lucknow are as follows:

  • Courses offered: IIIT Lucknow provides a wide range of courses under one roof. It offers B. Tech, MTech as well as MBA.
  • Placement: This year IIIT Lucknow concluded their placement with the highest package of INR 59 LPA and an average package of INR 30.52 LPA. Top recruiters like Amazon, Flipkart, Intel, BYJU, Capgemini, etc. visited the campus for placement. They gained huge success due to their coding culture.
  • Infrastructure: Being a newly constructed campus the hostel's infrastructure is in excellent condition. The rooms are very large and have basic amenities such as beds, study tables, and almirahs. Water and electricity are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week at the hostel.
  • Alumni: Monika Gupta (Assistant Professor at BITS Pilani), and Surya Prakash Pati (Assistant Professor at IIM Kozhikode) are a few notable alumni of this organization.

IIIT Lucknow offers a compelling opportunity for a solid academic foundation, good placement statistics, and a dynamic learning environment that is ideal for being a better choice than other new IIITs.

  • Academics: Honestly, this is where the Institute lacks. The staff delivers robotic knowledge without any lively classroom discussions making the learning experience monotonous.
  • Placements: The placement cell of the college works pretty hard to maintain a decent placement scenario and students with good academic performance usually get good packages.
  • ROI: Another aspect I feel one should consider is the ROI which is low in case of SRM. The fees are extremely high in comparison to the academic standards but the surety of placements makes people choose it anyway.
  • Campus Life: You get to experience amazing college life with lots of creative activities and new things to learn.

Ultimately it’s you who decides whether a certain college is right for you or not, so do your part of the research and make a wise decision.

How is life as an MBBS student in JIPMER?

SS
Shreyansh Roy Singh Posted On : September 21st, 2023
Masters from Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research,Pondicherry (2018)

The life of an MBBS student at JIPMER is quiet and tiring. Yet, they get to learn and experience new things every day. Their daily schedule looks like this

  • 8 am to 11 am: Lectures
  • 11 am to 1 pm: Anatomy dissection hours
  • 1 pm to 2 pm: Lunch break
  • 2 pm to 4:30 pm: Practicals

In the evening some prefer playing basketball, football, hockey, table tennis, and badminton while others order just napping or hitting the gym. Some music lovers go to the band room to play out various symphonies and musicals. A few artist students spend their time participating or practicing for fine arts competitions.

September brings in a huge crowd of students from different colleges attending Spandan. It’s a 7 day intercollegiate cultural literary and sports extravaganza that makes the monotonous life of JIPMER students a bit vibrant.

October witnesses the Jipmer premier league ied teams of girls and boys. There is also Curie Day which is the annual girls' hostel day celebration. The hostel is open for boys as well and girls perform dance and sing. After all this enjoyment, the exams begin and students are reminded of their primary goal.

January is usually spent at home. In February, students go to Pune for the fest at AFMC -‘Silhouettes’. March brings in the tension of the annual university examinations and everybody can be seen surrounded by books. The seniors organize a wonderful Holi celebration- a cultural night followed by gulaal in the morning to ensure that students don’t succumb to the stress. With this the most happening year, the first year comes to an end.

The subsequent years bring in additional tasks such as Research projects, voluntary teaching, quizzing, etc.
