Mumbai University Mandates Affiliated Colleges to Form Development Committee

New Delhi: Mumbai University has announced that colleges that do not have a development panel or committee will face action from authorities. As of now, among the 894 colleges affiliated with Mumbai University, only 350 have established College Development Committees (CDC), mandatory for crafting comprehensive development plans of colleges.

Furthermore, out of those colleges with CDCs, only 150 have submitted reports to the university. Hence, Mumbai University has issued an ultimatum, directing all the colleges to set up CDCs within the next eight days and start the report submissions, a task ideally expected to be completed by all affiliated colleges before June 2024.

The Management Council of Mumbai University has decided in a meeting on May 9. The issue of the absence of CDCs was pointed out during the Senate meeting held recently in March.

What are College Development Committees or CDCs?

The members expressed their concerns as CDCs are important to advise and prepare plans for the academic, administrative and infrastructural growth of respective colleges. It is mandatory under the Maharashtra Public Universities Act 2016 for all colleges to have CDC.

The CDC consists of the college principal, representatives from management, teaching and non-teaching staff, students and external individuals from the fields of education, industry, research and social service.

Besides overseeing the planning and implementation of college growth initiatives, these committees are responsible for brainstorming and proposing new courses aligned with industry demands, as well as ensuring updated safety and security measures, among other responsibilities.

The CDC is expected to meet at least four times per academic year to present an updated growth plan to Mumbai University every year in June, aligning with the commencement of the new academic year.

On May 9, the MU management council decided that action would be taken against colleges as per the Maharashtra Public Universities Act 2016 if CDCs are not formed in all remaining colleges within the next eight days.

According to an official from Mumbai University, this is a serious lacuna which may hamper the growth of individual institutions. Considering the academic flexibility recommended under the Nation Education Policy (NEP), colleges must keep updated to provide quality education to students. Presence of the CDC and its periodical reports will ensure the same.

Mumbai University to Address Water Shortage at Kalina Campus

Mumbai University is set to address the water shortage experienced at its Kalina Campus by installing borewells. This initiative forms part of an extensive action plan finalised during the Management Council meeting, which deliberated on the inadequate water supply issues plaguing the university's Kalina campus.

The Mumbai University official stated that each time the university resorts to water tanker services, it incurs expenses close to INR 50,000. The recently approved annual budget for the financial years 2024-25, passed during the Senate meeting, allocates INR 25 crore for hostel facilities and water sustainability,
