JNU Students’ Union Requests to Bring Back JNUEE for PhD Admission 2024-25

New Delhi: The Jawaharlal Nehru University Students’ Union have urged the university to bring back the JNU entrance exam (JNUEE) for PhD admissions. The students’ body requested the JNU administration to withdraw the circular which notified the use of the National Eligibility Test (NET) scores for PhD admissions instead of the entrance exam from the academic year 2024-25.

The JNU students’ body has raised their concerns about the effect of JNU’s decision on students from marginalized communities and female candidates, a memorandum submitted to the Director of Admissions revealed.

JNUSU stated in the memo that this decision of the JNU would make marginalized students feel even more excluded. They believe that using NET scores ignores the different backgrounds and experiences of PhD applicants, especially those from marginalized communities.

Further, the students argued that replacing JNUEE with NET for JNU PhD admissions will increase the chances of dependency on viva voce. They mentioned that there have been many cases of discrimination during viva for PhD admissions. As a result, they're concerned that this change will make it harder for aspirants to pursue higher education, leading to more inequality within academics.

Challenges Surrounding NET for JNU PhD Admissions 2024

Speaking about the possible problems that may arise by using NET for research admissions, the JNUSU mentioned that it could lead to unfair advantages for students who have more resources for exam preparation. They also said that the NET exam doesn't properly assess candidates' abilities for interdisciplinary research.

The JNUSU pointed out another issue which was the removal of deprivation points. These points are important for women and marginalized students because they help level the playing field, offering equal opportunities to students who have faced disadvantages. Removing them will make it harder to promote diversity and inclusivity within the university.

The student body was concerned as they weren't included in the university’s academic council for decision-making, even though they represent the student community. They said that students were unhappy with the decision, which shows their opposition.

As representatives of the students, the JNUSU strongly disagrees with this decision and asks the university to think about it again and bring back the JNUEE for PhD admissions. The JNUSU considers it important to have a fair and inclusive entrance exam process that considers the concerns of women and marginalized groups to uphold the principles of justice and equality in the university.
