Indian Institute of Science Education and Research Bhopal (IISER Bhopal) researchers have developed a clear synthetic biomedical adhesive that can effectively seal and repair injured and dissected tissues.

New Delhi: The Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER) Bhopal has pioneered a cutting-edge biomedical adhesive that promises to transform the field of tissue repair.
This adhesive is biodegradable and biocompatible and is capable of binding different surfaces such as tissues, bones, eggshells, and wood in both air and underwater It requires no additional crosslinking agents or metal ions.
According to Professor Srivastava, Faculty, Department of Chemistry, IISER Bhopal, “Biomedical adhesives are bonding and sealing materials that provide support and cohesion to repair tissues and are extensively used in medicine. Suitable materials for these adhesives can be found in nature and are commonly secreted by underwater organisms such as sandcastle worms and mussels.”

These biodegradable and biocompatible adhesives find application in medicine, dentistry, drug delivery, and tissue engineering. These adhesives are used in orthopedics procedures to repair bone and can even used as an alternative to sutures, staples, and wires, in wound closures. They could also be used in eco-friendly packaging applications and products contributing to sustainable practices in various industries.
While biomimetic adhesives have been previously developed and used, they often exhibited limitations, notably those derived from natural polymers like fibrin, collagen, gelatin, and chitosan, which carried the risk of immunological reactions and were not always suitable for cosmetic and surface tissue adhesion applications. Additionally, their lack of transparency and potential for varied colors posed aesthetic concerns, highlighting the demand for cost-effective, biocompatible, and transparent adhesive solutions.
