New Delhi: IIM Calcutta is embarking on a significant expansion project to construct new hostels and academic blocks to address the growing student population and attract international scholars. Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan is set to inaugurate the hostel on January 31, marking a crucial milestone in the institute's development.
In a release, IIM Calcutta said: “There is an urgent need to upgrade the infrastructure so that the institute can retain its competitive edge on the national and global stage”.
Recognizing the importance of providing cutting-edge accommodation and learning facilities, the institute acknowledges the necessity of upgrading infrastructure, particularly as it expands its executive-level programs.
Infrastructure Upgrade at IIM Calcutta
The envisioned project comprises G+9 structures encompassing hostels, a service building, and a substation building. The decision to dismantle older hostels while upgrading the overall infrastructure highlights a commitment to modernising facilities and ensuring a conducive learning environment.
The proposed G+9 building, with a substantial built-up area of 32,556 square meters, is slated to house 726 rooms with common washrooms and 200 rooms with attached washrooms.
The estimated cost for this ambitious venture stands at INR 245.88 crore. Renowned architect Hafeez Contractor, known for designing iconic structures in India, has been entrusted with the project's architectural vision through the Central Public Works Department (CPWD).
Operating on a sprawling 135-acre campus in Joka with around 1,200 students, IIM Calcutta faces unique challenges due to its marshy land location, impacting the structural integrity of existing hostels.
