New Delhi: Former Foreign Secretary Kanwal Sibal is set to be the new Chancellor of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU). Sibal was the Indian Ambassador to Russia, Turkey, Egypt and France. In 2017, he was awarded the Padma Shri, the fourth highest Civilian award from President Pranab Mukherjee.
He will take over the position of Former Director General of DRDO V. K. Saraswat, Appointed to the post in 2017. Before Saraswat, K Kasturirangan was the ISRO Chairman. The Jawaharlal Nehru University thanked and honored the outgoing chancellor and NITI Aayog member Vijay Kumar Saraswat.
Sibal has served the central government in various posts. He also served as a member of India’s National Security Advisory Board between 2008 and 2010.
According to the Jawaharlal Nehru University Act, a Chancellor's tenure is five years. As per the Act, the Chancellor shall be the head of the University and shall be eligible for a re-appointment.
In addition to this, the act also says that the JNU Chancellor shall preside over the convocation of the university for conferring degrees and that the chancellor shall be competent to grant leave to the vice-chancellor.
A document updated in March this year on the University’s website highlights details on the members of the University’s ‘court’ (which is defined as the “supreme authority” of the University in the Act), stating that Saraswat was appointed in May 2017 and that a “letter dated 26.09.2022, has been sent to MoE for his further extension.”
