New Delhi: The University Grant Commission (UGC) has decided that National Eligibility Test (NET) scores will be used for PhD admissions effective from the 2024-25 academic year. It is going to replace entrance exams traditionally held by various universities and higher education institutions, as per the recent announcement dated March 27, 2024.

However, for disciplines like Portuguese, Italian, certain branches of engineering where UGC doesn’t conduct any NET examination, universities may conduct their own entrance examinations.
What Are the Guidelines for Delhi University PhD Admission?
The guidelines for admission in Delhi University PhD are as follows:
- The NET scores obtained by candidates will be divided into 3 categories - Award For JRF & Appointment as Assistant Professor, Appointment as Assistant Professor & Admission to PhD, Admission to PhD Only.
- In the Category 1 or Award For JRF & Appointment as Assistant Professor, candidates are eligible for Junior Research Fellowship, appointment as Assistant Professor & pursuing PhD.
- In the Category 2 or Appointment as Assistant Professor & Admission to PhD, candidates are not eligible for Junior Research Fellowship. They are only eligible for appointment as Assistant Professor & pursuing PhD.
- In Category 3 or Admission to PhD Only, candidates are only eligible for PhD. They are not eligible for the Juniorship Research Fellowship & get appointed as Assistant Professor.
- For admission in Ph.D, there will be a weightage of 70% for NET score & 30% for Interview.
- The validity of NET score for candidates for the Category 1 & category 2 are limited to one year only. This suggests that candidates have to apply for PhD admission within a year of qualifying UGC NET.
