Dr. Beena Thomas is the PSGR Krishnammal College For Women, Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu. She did BSc in Madras University, MSc in Bharathiar University and PhD in Bharathiar University. She has more than 20 years of experience in the education sector. Mrs. Beena Thomas has been in the teaching profession for the past three decades. She has been the Chairperson of the Board of Studies for undergraduates for English and revamped the syllabus. She is currently a member of the postgraduate Board of Studies. She has been a resource person on many occasions at different colleges and Universities presented with many research papers, prepared lessons for distance education courses and course content developer for English.

Being a Faculty of PSGR Krishnammal College For Women, what are your roles and responsibilities toward the students?

“To facilitate the holistic development of the students through appropriate guidance and encouragement”

The important role of the teaching faculty is to facilitate the holistic development of the students through appropriate guidance and encouragement. Our first and foremost role is to improve the English language skills of the students. Further, I utilize the opportunities to refine enhance values and personality traits of students through the literary texts taught. Illustrations from life contribute towards greater development of understanding and knowledge base. 


How do you tend to establish healthy relations with the students and fellow faculty?

“Practice student centric teaching learning methodology, inclusiveness and language skills for a healthy establishment”

To establish a healthy relationship with the students, we produce student centric ambience and teaching learning methodology. Our campus is ensuring access through participative administrative practices. Practice of Inclusiveness is covered on campus through regional medium students who are motivated to improve English language skills. We are procuring Feedback and analyzing it through pupils. 


How do you try to bring in a practical approach to subjects and make it industry-oriented?

“Workshops, seminars and industrial visits are given to the students”

Internship training and field trips are arranged for pupils. Workshops and seminars are organized to enable interaction with the experts. 


What are the best practices offered by the department to students which help them gain necessary skills?

“Organize curricular and extracurricular activities to develop language skills of pupils”

Empowering women through English language skills is the best practice of the department. Co-curricular and extracurricular activities are organized with the focus to develop their English language skills. 


How do you strategize the curriculum and how often does it get updated to make it befitting for the students?

“Design syllabus as per UGC prescribed learning outcome”

As I was the Chairperson of the UG-English Board of Studies, University of Madras, we are updating the syllabus as per the latest UGC prescribed Learning Outcome based Curriculum Framework.

How do you help your student to cope up with the competition being so high in the outside world?

“Improve communication skills through integration of extra curricular and co-curricular activities”

Our department as a whole helps the students to gain an edge over others by improving their communication skills through integration of Co-curricular and extracurricular activities with focused objectives on language enhancement. Our teaching methodology ensures a good subject knowledge. 


Do you have any extracurricular activities to enhance the skills of the students or expose them to real-world challenges?

“Conferences and department activities are provided to pupils to face real world challenges”

English Language and Literature Association ensures students participation in extra-curricular activities to enhance their skills. Department activities accentuate the needed skills. Co curricular activities like Student conferences expose them to real-world challenges.


What are the challenges you faced to uplift the quality of education of PSGR Krishnammal College For Women?

“Socio economic background, lack of self motivation and gender specific issues uplift are the greatest challenges faced by us”

Lack of self motivation among students is the greatest challenge apart from gender specific Issues. Another one is socio economic background which creates impediments in setting their goals. 


What are the interventions and approaches you bring in apart from curriculum to train the students?

“Counseling sessions, regular mentoring and additional certification courses are provided to students”

Additional Certificate courses along with regular mentoring, and counseling sessions will train the students on campus. 


What do you see as the greatest strengths of PSGR Krishnammal College For Women and how can it be enhanced?

“Experienced teaching faculty are the greatest strengths of campus”

Experienced teaching faculty with more than 30 years of experience are the greatest strength of the department. Under their guidance, the faculty are able to impart holistic training. It is continually enhanced to suit the requirements of the millennial generation.
