Dr. Harshal V. Poojari is a Professor from St. John College of Humanities and Sciences and has more than eight years of experience in the field of Botany and Research. Dr. Harshal V. Poojari has expertise in Plant identification and has done research in Plant Biodiversity and Ethnobotany of Palghar Taluka. Dr. Harshal V. Poojari is currently working on the Flora of Palghar District and received a grant of INR 2 lakh for his research project from the Management of Aldel Education Trust. He has a total of 04 research papers in his credit and 03 plants after his research has formed a new record for the State of Maharashtra. Dr. Harshal V. Poojari is working as Head of the Botany Department in the B.Sc. Program and is committed to providing an energetic and engaging learning experience for students. Dr. Harshal V. Being the Head of the Department of the St. John College of Humanities and Sciences, what is your leadership philosophy, and how would you describe your role?

Being the Head of the B.Sc. department, I have to set small future goals to uplift and develop my department in all possible spheres. I also lead, manage, and guide my faculties for better departmental functioning. I also make sure that all objectives and goals go hand in hand with the institution’s mission and industry trends. My role also involves students' needs to be kept at top-notch priority while ensuring the delivery of high-quality education to make them ready for the ever-changing fields of teaching, research, and industry.


What factors make your department the best for the students to opt for your college?

We believe in students' holistic development by providing them with basic to advanced-level knowledge. We have a team of experienced and young faculty that are energetic and dedicated to their work.


What is your vision for the Department, and how do you plan to lead the department to achieve that vision?

Our vision is to develop competent future professionals who will be a part of research institutes, colleges, and leading industries. To achieve our vision we are providing the basic paraphernalia followed by discipline to our students.


What are the objectives of your department?

Our department aims to develop future leaders in teaching, research, and industry professionals. We work together to develop our students and facilities on their research front.


How do you foster an environment of innovation and creativity among students from your department and encourage them to apply theoretical knowledge to practical applications?

We mentor our students to participate in different research/ technical project competitions like Avishkar conducted by Mumbai University, and Science Fest conducted by our St. John Campus where they can present their new ideas by creating innovative projects.

What are the challenges you faced/ are facing to uplift the quality of education in your department?

Diversification in subject combinations and involvement of new techniques in the subject where the student has to be made aware of the instruments from scratch. 


How did you train yourself/faculty to deliver this program to the students?

Faculty are encouraged to participate in professional development programs, workshops, and conferences to stay updated with the latest advancements in their field. Senior faculty or mentors guided newer faculty members, helping them understand the expectations and culture of the department.


What are the types of projects that the students are working on through this program and what benefits do they get after pursuing this course?

Students are working with faculty on various research projects that give proper exposure to them in developing a research-oriented background. Students are helping faculty in developing college herbarium and Palghar district flora as a part of skill development. In the era of research and invention students are made aware and are made well trained about the skills required to be competent in industries.


How do you address the job placement and career guidance needs of students from your department, especially considering the evolving demands of the job market?

We invite industry professionals to deliver guest lectures, sharing their experiences and insights into the latest trends and challenges. We organize workshops on resume building, interview skills, and job search strategies to prepare students for the job market.


What message would you like to give to the current youth and aspiring students?

Remember that your journey is unique, and it’s okay to make your path. The world is constantly evolving, and the ability to learn and adapt is invaluable. Make learning a lifelong habit. Define your short-term and long-term goals. Having a clear direction helps you stay focused and motivated. Your dreams and ambitions are worth pursuing.
