Mrs. D. Deepika Devi is an Assistant Professor and Head of the English Department at PPG College Of Arts and Science. She holds an M.Phil in English degree from Bharathiar University. She has over seven years of experience in the teaching field. She has published two research papers in international journals. She has attended 17 workshops/ seminars/ FDPs.

What would you say are the “best practices” in the course you’re offering?

The department of English has offered peer learning sessions, classroom activity and online courses like Great Learning. Through peer learning sessions students can develop their communication skills, strategy to interact with their commune and so on. Book review, Word hunt, Play with grammar and ICT are some of the classroom activities for the students to enhance their language skills. Students can develop communication skills, adapt leadership skills, mentoring skills also they can train themselves professionally by attending conferences and workshops. Learner centered method assimilates the cognitive capacity of the students. Oratorical practices to be held frequently in order to attain a good fluency.


How does the program ensure that students are being prepared for the future?

The program enhances the level of critical thinking, literateness, writing proficiency, research skill and professional skill. This will stimulate the growth of their professional career with a perfect communication skill. Critical thinking enables them to analyze complex situations, identifying the problems in all kinds of circumstances and it develops to understand their capacity in finding the solution. Literateness induces the level of fluency within and outside the country. Writing proficiency provides an optimistic approach among the contemporaries in the technical field.


How did you train yourself/faculty to deliver this program to the students?

We train our faculties to study various language teaching methodologies and pedagogical training to familiarize in language acquisition theories. We create effective lesson planning that engages the students to involve themselves in acquiring knowledge in English. They are frequently instructed to conduct classroom activities which enhance the level of participative learning. Perspectives of individual faculties have been discussed and scrutinized properly for the effective classroom delivery. Faculties are instructed to develop corporate skills among the students through conducting different critical thinking activities.


What were the challenges that you faced while inculcating this program in your curriculum?

Faculties are facing challenges in the classroom because of students from different diversities and their lack of knowledge in communication. The syllabus may have time restrictions so that faculties have to train themselves to explore certain topics through conducting some activities. Language is constantly evolving with new vocabularies, slangs and communication styles so that faculties endeavor to update new trends in English language. Through updating teaching materials, strategies, faculties can overcome the challenges and improve the delivery of the English curriculum.

What are the benefits and career options after pursuing this course?

English is a versatile language; it is widely spoken in various fields throughout the world. The English course can improve the skills in communication, creative writing, cultural awareness and it helps to analyze the situation and adapt the solution in their professional life. This course offers career options that include Journalism, freelancer, content writer, language trainer, language translator, corporate communication and it gives hand to clear TOFEL, IELTS, BEC and other competitive exams. We encourage students to set clear career goals to avoid obstacles in their future life. Make them seek opportunities to improve their skills and keep on updating in their concerned field. Enhance their discipline, time management, persistence, consistency, logical reasoning, positive social relationship, character analysis, develop their interview skills, adaptability, leadership quality, managing skills, decision making, and wide knowledge in their field.


When you came to college, what was your vision and how are you trying to achieve the same?

The ultimate goal is to take part in an individual’s growth and develop the institution through contributing to the field's knowledge sharing, guiding students to build their future effectively. Make students prepare a wide range of exposing careers. Exploring ideas to students of a variety of authors, genres and viewpoints, giving frequent hope to extend their cultural and literary horizons. Constantly updating the knowledge, research in my area, engaging students with effective teaching and encouraging them to participate in extracurricular activities and skill development programs.


What made you decide to become a teacher?

Passion for teaching and love can encourage gaining knowledge and sharing valuable thoughts that persuade students in their growth. Engaging in dynamic learning environments develops personal growth, discipline and acts as a role model for the students. A great thing is sharing and caring for others and shaping their character. Teachers play a major role in everyone’s life. A good teacher acts as a ladder for an individual by guiding them and carries them to their successful life. I ignite the minds of students with knowledge and to provide a good citizen to our society.
