Mr. S. Sugavanam completed his Masters in Computer Science and Engineering from Vinayaka Mission University Salem in 2009. He is currently working as an Assistant Professor and Head of the department in charge of Computer Science and Business Systems at Arjun College of Technology. He has rich teaching experience since 2006 and has guided many students in their projects and careers and now working as a professional, in many esteemed organizations. He has published papers in reputed journals and co-authored two books on cognitive systems. He is also capable of dealing with a wide variety of people, and ability to analyze a problem quickly and develop an effective response. He has rich domain knowledge in Database Management Systems, Data Science and Analytics, Data Structure, and Designs in addition to the programming languages of C and Python. His mission is to develop academically excellent, highly intellectual, and self-disciplined engineers, catering to the needs of our nation and molding them as not only good citizens but also as next-generation leaders by sharing his knowledge in technical education through the teaching-learning process.

What is the latest program you are offering in your institute/ dept. which will help students outperform and stand apart from the crowd?

The latest program which we are offering in our department is Legacy Leaders. Every individual in the world has their uniqueness in every single aspect of their life. The main motto of this program is to create next-generation leaders in society by understanding their capabilities, and areas of interest and motivate students to take up/ kick-start their interest, by providing necessary resources and opportunities to explore their passion, or unique talents through various activities and tasks, with continuous mentoring to make him/ her an excellent leader by following his passion, so, that after their graduation they will not be a successful person to take up their passion but also a successful leader with the capability to lead others and teach the leadership to others easily which creates a chain of qualitative leaders across generations.


What factors make this program the best for the students to opt for?

The factors that contribute to the continuous succession of the program/ platform in practice are that The entire program functions on understanding every single student’s potential. Opportunity to explore his interest or passion on all possible and available platforms which can be provided by the department or within the institution. Creation of self-interest as we provide an opportunity to take up what they are more passionate about, which inculcates self-discipline and all basic qualities of leadership. Periodical mentoring helps him to understand and rectify his mistakes. Providing the industry-oriented approach helps them to understand the current functioning level of an industry and ways to stand on their own feet to stay apart from the crowd by generating unique solutions on their own. The amalgamation of various interests working with their team and working together as a team helps to share the knowledge about their passion or the areas of interest It also helps to create a mutual coordination and cooperation to help themselves.


What will you say are the “best practices” in the course you’re offering?

The best practices in the course we’re offering include Space creation to try their ideas on a trial and error method basis. If succeed, we help them to take up into the real-time market. Experimental learning helps to gain more knowledge apart from regular academics. Brainstorming session to identify both problems and solutions. Periodical activities and tasks help them to stay engaged and focused, thus the level of inner desire that helps to achieve and move towards their next goal in a step-by-step process. Periodical events and meetups help to showcase their stuff through the paper presentation, project demonstration, project talks, and knowledge sharing within themselves helping to gain knowledge on every different domain which helps them to interact with the real industrial persons and experts with proper fundamental to expert level knowledge.


What are some valuable insights into the program that you are offering at your institute/ dept.?

Multiple areas of interest help to combine or fuse their ideas to come up with a unique solution through a thinking out-of-the-box approach. Networking skills have been improved within themselves and with the industrial world. Indirect inculcation and habituation of professional skills like Agile working, team bonding, time management, etc., through habituation and practice. The best ideas are shaped and converted into side hustles which helps them to learn during earning. Creation of a real-time business environment within the campus because students who engaged themselves in the program are budding and blooming as entrepreneurs, freelancers, stock market traders, photographers, event managers, motivational speakers, skilled artisans, etc. Mutual Learning with morale among the students without any guidance over some time after proper self-realization.

How does the program ensure that students are being prepared for the future?

Students after taking up this program help to move towards their goals so that it helps to learn and earn while doing their graduation with a nutshell protection and support. This helps them to understand how to present themselves in the real world. Proper backup and guidance in the initial stages support them in understanding the pros and cons of implementing their ideas, and the way to handle them most professionally, and at ease. Real-time practice of a business or getting expertise in the area of interest helps them to master themselves and elevates them to create their passionate friends or juniors as a leader under their guidance.


How did you train yourself/ faculty to deliver this program to the students?

We identify the faculty’s area of interest where they like to learn. Engaging faculties through various certification courses, workshops, seminars, webinars, etc. to gain fundamental knowledge more strongly. Working with students apart from regular academic times helps to share knowledge and mutually grow and develop professional bonding on the industrial dimension. Developing proper networking with industrial experts helps to gain real-world applications knowledge and helps enrich persistently. Choosing the student team who is capable of cooperating with faculties guidance style and associating them for the guidance.


What are the types of projects that the students are working on through this program?

Students who engage in Legacy leadership are taking up the projects or works that they are passionate about. They provide freelancing services and work as interns in the process or company of a particular industry where they would like to, few run their own start-ups and side hustles to learn and earn. The projects they work with diversified/range from providing web application development services, developing program and automation software for small-scale businesses, working as technical trainer associates in the field where they are interested, project completion services on a paid basis, writing blogs as independent bloggers or for a particular organization, creation of brochure or industrial catalog as a paid freelancer, running a side hustle - on photography, event management, home bakes, motivational speeches and artisans selling their products in social media.


When you came to college, what was your vision and how you are trying to achieve the same?

My vision is to develop an interactive, inclusive classroom atmosphere in which every student learns to appreciate and respect the diversity and uniqueness among themselves and others together as a family. Develop a proper physical healthier habit to protect, and get rid of harmful and addictive habits. Promote both hard and soft skills, work and thinking, and balance emotions with compassion, resilience, etc. Develop a forward-looking, technologically enhanced, and motivated learner. Help my students to identify the passions that will pursue during and after their graduation. Create leaders for generations, with the quality and skill required to succeed and stand out in this 21st century. Help students understand and develop the democratic, social, and human values of youth citizenship by developing a boundless community with both equity and equality.


What made you decide to become a teacher?

Five elements Land, Air, Water, Space, and Fire help to create the universe in which we exist today. Likewise, every profession in this world can be compared to the sources of five elements but teaching is the only profession in the world that can be compared to the element of Fire. The very nature of the fire element is that if the fire is shared/spread any other or near or associated with it, will convert that element or a thing as a fire and the fire lives forever through, a cycle of ignition. Thus, teaching is also like an element of fire if we ignite one mind towards enlightenment of knowledge and wisdom it will be ignited through sharing and lives forever.
