Dr. Bhanu Pratap Singh is the Vice Chancellor of Maharishi University of Information and Technology. With a B.Tech. from HBTI, Kanpur and an M.Tech. from UPTU Dehradun, he also has a PhD from UPES Dehradun. He has 20 years of experience in administration, research and academia along with nine years in the industry.

Dr. Singh has published over 20 papers in reputed international and national journals. He holds lifetime memberships to ISTE and IAENG and is a reviewer of Engineering Mechanics books published by Tata McGraw Hill Education and The Open Renewable Energy Journal.

Dr. Bhanu has previously served as Director at Moradabad Institute of Technology, SCET Ghaziabad, and has held professorship positions at NIET Greater Noida, and MIT Moradabad. His research interests are in the areas of biofuels, thermodynamic modelling and VCR engines.

Being a Vice-Chancellor of MUIT, what is your philosophy of leadership? How would you describe your leadership style?

Leadership is a complicated process because it involves people. Each person perceives things differently based on their own experiences, aspirations, and motivations. However, to be a good leader, one must be able to understand different people and their varied thought processes to be able to lead them. Setting out a vision is very important but being seen taking action is another thing and that is what gets people interested in following you. Another important thing is to let people know that you care for them. One should get to know their teams well to learn about their personal lives, thereby respecting them as distinctive individuals. People are complicated; hence, no single leadership style works all the time. Leadership styles must be a mixture of different methods of making people listen to you, work for you and finally produce an output that is beneficial to the university.

Being a Vice-Chancellor of MUIT, how do you strategize about the key programs and plans for the marketing and administration of your university?

Marketing plans are the roadmap to success for our university, keeping us on track with our initiatives throughout the year and the next several years. Our university’s marketing plans streamline what we do and outline why we are doing it. Validating these important decisions is important for gaining support for the plan and ensuring that we continue to move forward with positive progress. It doesn’t matter if we are a small private university or a university with multiple campuses and grade levels; we can create a strategic marketing plan that meets the needs and administer it keeping in mind our prime focus. For our university, we identify the goals, prioritise them, assess the needs and required resources and implement them for a successful measure of the plan while ensuring to take feedback for improvements. 

How do you tend to establish healthy relations with the students and faculties? 

Positive and healthy relationships between faculty and students can be extremely beneficial at all levels of an educational establishment, both within the classroom and across the university environment. We can experience these by communicating positive expectations, demonstrating caring, and developing classroom pride. Speaking with students privately about their behaviour to avoid embarrassment, acknowledging students’ feelings to understand the cause of their problems, and reviewing university policy or classroom guidelines so that students are aware of the rules they do not violate are a few of the methods to connect with students. While trying to establish a relationship with faculty, we need to always be professional and respect any boundaries faculty may establish. Moreover, showing a genuine interest in faculty and their research as you get to know them motivates better performance. 

How does the curriculum of MUIT ensure the best practice of industry?

The curriculum at the university is framed keeping in mind the current trends prevailing in the industry, which can be met by our students. We focus on the holistic grooming of students with semi-developed skills that are ready to be delivered to the industry. Curriculum updates are also done regularly so that the students are taught the latest techniques and courses.

What are the best practices offered by the University to the students which help them gain necessary skills? 

The approach towards developing the skills of the students has changed over the years. From elementary skills to modern and advanced market-oriented skills, the university has adapted all necessary methods for the benefit of students. Seminars, webinars, guest lectures by experts from the industry in relevant fields, in-house workshops, and many more techniques are used to keep our students on par with the market. The focus has also shifted towards practical knowledge based teaching rather than theoretical teaching. 

How do you strategize the curriculum and how often it gets updated to make it befitting for the students? 

Our course curriculum is designed keeping in mind market trends. We also recognise the importance of updating our existing knowledge bank. We make sure our curriculum is updated on a regular basis to match the current prevailing industry prospects. This helps our students be absorbed into the market as soon as they graduate. 

What are your views upon the placements and higher education about the students from your university or How does your University prepare students for higher education?

In the current scenario, the placement activities have changed from being physical to online. Therefore, a smaller number of placement drives are arranged in the university and more online placement webinars, and interviews are organised with respect to the qualifications of the student and the job description of the company. Personality and interview ethics are also being nurtured among the students so that they are prepared for any challenges in the market. Also, students are being made aware of the latest and most updated courses or certificate programs offered nationally and internationally online nowadays for their benefit. 

When you came to the University, what was your vision and how are you trying to achieve the same? 

My vision when I joined MUIT was to work towards the branding of the university and its growth. As the university was established recently, my prime objective was to add resources and infrastructural support for the university so that the students get the best aid for their academic development. Also, necessary affiliations and accreditations that are required for the growth of the university should be planned and approached so that no hindrances occur in the university’s progression. For this, various necessary actions have been taken till now and others are in the pipeline.

What valuable advice would you like to the students for them to have a prosperous career ahead? 

I would wish all the students to be focused on their studies and have a practical approach towards their holistic growth. They should have an open frame of mind to develop all the necessary skills that are pre-requisites for the market. The students should aim for the best output from the best input they can give to achieve it. Also, my advice to them will be to plan their actions concerning their career prospects to get it timely so that they don’t regret it later on.
