Mrs. Saumya John is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Computer Science at St. Thomas Arts and Science College, Puthencruz, Kerala. She holds a B.Sc. degree in chemistry and an MCA degree. Besides that, she has more than 22 years of experience in teaching and research. Throughout her tenure at the college, she has dedicated herself to shaping young students' minds and imparting computer science knowledge.

As an assistant professor in the department, what are your roles and responsibilities towards the students? 

My primary responsibilities and duties are to teach students and deliver the set course curriculum. I also guide my students with their careers and aim to be a mentor and guide for them. Besides these duties, I also work with my faculty members to shape the curriculum and provide support to them when necessary.

How do you tend to establish healthy relations with the students and fellow faculty?

Building healthy relationships with students and the college is essential for the success of the college. It is an ongoing process and requires dedicated efforts. We make it a point to appreciate our student’s achievements and encourage them to celebrate their wins. We always try to be with them during their hard times and the good times.

How do you try to bring in a practical approach towards subjects and make it industry-oriented?

Our department provides different activities related to their curriculum for the enrichment of the students. This helps them gain the necessary skills that the industry demands, and they will be able to compete better in the modern world. Apart from that, we regularly update the curriculum based on industry feedback and emerging trends.

What are the best practices offered by the department to the students that help them gain necessary skills?

In our department, we prepare students for better schooling by focusing on studies, critical questioning, and problem-solving abilities, which help them gain skills and knowledge about their field.

How do you strategize the curriculum, and how often does it get updated to make it befitting for the students?

Our primary aim is to help students cope with competition by emphasizing innovation, teamwork, and communication skills. Every year, we update our curriculum and ensure that the new emerging trends are included, which will keep the students up to date with the modern world. 

Do you have any extracurricular activities/ programs to enhance the skills of the students or expose them to real-world challenges?

Yes, we have extracurricular activities like hackathons, coding clubs, IT Fest, and industry-specific training programs.

In our department, we use project-based learning, flipped classrooms, and mentorship programs to train students.
