Dr. S. Ranga Swamy is an Associate Professor and Head of the Department of Computer Science Engineering Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning at Vignan’s Institute of Technology and Management. He holds an M.Tech. in CSE from JNTUA and a PhD in CSE from Acharya Nagarjuna University. Dr. Ranga Swamy has proven himself to be the best academician by completing several certification courses like the University of Michigan Certified Data Science, Deeplearning.ai Certified Artificial Intelligence, University of Colorado Classical Cryptosystems, INSEAD-The Business School for the World Certified Blockchain, and Coursera Project Network Certified JAVA Developer.
Dr. Swamy has authored and published 26 international journal publications, including SCI, SCOPUS, UGC Approved Journals, and 11 international conferences like IEEE, Springer, etc. He has also authored and published nine national patents and one Australian granted patent. He has published three books and 11 book chapters. Currently, he is a life member of the Indian Society for Technical Education, the Institute of Engineers, the International Association of Engineers, and The Society of Digital Information and Wireless Communication. Dr. Ranga has received the Indian Achiever’s Award in the field of “Education Excellence” from the Indian Achievers Forum. He has guided 12 M.Tech scholars and more than 100 B.Tech graduates from various technical institutions.

Could you please provide an overview of your roles and responsibilities as the Head of The Department of CSE (AI & ML) at VIMTW?
As the Head of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering with a specialisation in Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning at Vignan Institute of Management and Technology for Women (VIMTW), my primary responsibilities encompass overseeing the academic and administrative aspects of the department. This includes curriculum development, faculty management, student engagement, and ensuring the overall smooth functioning of the department. I also play a crucial role in fostering a conducive learning environment, encouraging research initiatives, and maintaining academic standards. Collaboration with faculty members and students is vital to promoting a culture of innovation and excellence within the department.
What is your vision for the CSE (AIM & ML) department for the coming years at VIMTW, and how do you plan to achieve it?
My vision for the CSE (Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning) department at VIMTW is centered around achieving academic excellence, fostering innovation, and preparing students for the dynamic field of AI and ML. I aim to enhance the curriculum to align with the latest industry trends, ensuring that students are equipped with the skills and knowledge required in the rapidly evolving technological landscape. Additionally, I plan to encourage research activities, collaborative projects, and industry partnerships to provide students with real-world exposure and opportunities. Creating a supportive and inspiring learning environment is essential for nurturing future leaders in the fields of AI and ML.
In today's fast-paced technological landscape, how do you keep yourself and your students updated with the latest developments in AI & ML?
Staying abreast of the latest developments in AI and ML is imperative in today's fast-paced technological landscape. I prioritise continuous learning and professional development for both myself and my students. This involves participating in workshops, attending conferences, and enrolling in relevant certification courses. Additionally, I encourage and facilitate opportunities for students to engage in hackathons, seminars, and industry internships. This ensures that our curriculum remains dynamic and reflects the current advancements in AI and ML, preparing students for the challenges of real-world applications.
What are the current biggest challenges in the field of Artificial Engineering & Machine Learning domain in general, and how do you plan to address them as a HOD?
The current challenges in the AI and ML domain revolve around ethical considerations, data privacy, and the responsible use of technology. As the HOD, I plan to address these challenges by incorporating ethical frameworks and discussions into the curriculum. Moreover, fostering a culture of responsible AI research and development will be a key focus. Collaboration with industry experts, regular guest lectures, and workshops on ethical AI practices will contribute to preparing our students to navigate the challenges and contribute positively to the field.

Collaborating with industry professionals and organisations is essential to bridging the gap between academia and industry. I plan to establish partnerships with leading companies in the AI and ML sectors to provide students with opportunities for internships, projects, and hands-on experiences. Industry professionals are invited for guest lectures, and the department will organise industry-academic interactions, workshops, and seminars. This collaboration aims to expose students to real-world challenges, foster networking, and enhance their employability in the competitive job market.
Can you explain us about the infrastructural facilities available with respect to CSE Department at VIMTW?
VIMTW is committed to providing state-of-the-art infrastructure for the CSE (Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning) department. Our facilities include well-equipped laboratories with the latest hardware and software, dedicated spaces for research and project work, and a comprehensive library with a vast collection of books, journals, and research publications. Additionally, we have established connections with research centers and industry partners to facilitate collaborative projects and internships for students, ensuring they have access to the tools and resources necessary for a holistic learning experience.
You are an individual who is actively involved into research and publications. How do you promote the culture if research activities among students?
To promote a culture of research among students, I actively engage them in research projects, encourage participation in conferences, and guide them through the process of publishing papers. Workshops and seminars on research methodologies are organised regularly, and students are encouraged to collaborate on interdisciplinary projects. The department also provides financial support and resources for students to attend conferences and present their research findings. This approach aims to instill a passion for research and innovation, preparing students for successful careers in academia and industry.
Any suggestions you would like to give to the current youth and the aspiring students?
My advice to current youth and aspiring students is to embrace a continuous learning mindset. The field of AI and ML is dynamic and staying updated with the latest technologies is crucial for success. Engage in hands-on projects, seek internships, and participate in hackathons to apply theoretical knowledge in practical scenarios. Additionally, prioritise ethical considerations in your work and understand the societal impact of technology. Networking with industry professionals, joining relevant professional organisations, and pursuing certifications can significantly enhance your career prospects. Lastly, never underestimate the power of collaboration and always be open to learning from your peers and mentors.
