Masters in Computer Science in Johannes Gutenberg University of Mainz is a discipline dealing with the theory, techniques and applications of automated and machine storage systems and the processing and transfer of data and information, specifically with the aid of computers. There are no tuition fees at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz. Students only have to pay an administrative fee for registration with university’s students service. For example, the administration fee of € 337.39 in the summer semester 2023 is used for:
- EUR 226.14 are charged for the semester ticket (you can use this ticket for public transportation in the Mainz and Wiesbaden city buses and light rail (MVG) as well as in the entire network of the Rhine-Main Transport Association (RMV) and the Rhein-Nahe-Nahverkehrsverbund (RNN) within the region)
- EUR 94.00 goes to the Studentenwerk. The Studentenwerk maintains the canteen, cafeterias, dormitories and various social counselling and assistance services.
- EUR 13.10 are charged to financially support the activities of the Student Union.
- EUR 1.60 are awarded to the Student Sports Committee to offer additional sports activities.
- EUR 2.55 go to the Student Aid Fund. The AStA (General Students' Committee) uses these funds to provide assistance to students in need in case of emergency.
Eligibility & Entry Requirement
Following are the requirements for the master’s program Computer Science with Minor in Physics, Mathematics or Biology need the following:
- A bachelor’s or similar degree from a German or foreign higher education institution, with at least 90 credits coming from subjects related to computer science, mathematics or physics.
- For specialization in
a) Biology At least 10 credits in subjects related to genetics and cell biology.b) Experimental Physics At least 10 credits in subjects related to mechanics, oscillations and waves, and thermodynamics (subject areas of experimental physics), along with practical laboratory experience.
c) Mathematics At least 8 credits in subjects related to advanced linear algebra.d) Theoretical Physics At least 10 credits in subjects related to classical mechanics, electrodynamics, and special relativity (subject areas of experimental physics), along with knowledge of physics equations. - Applicants have to have a very good active and passive knowledge of English that enables them to read the specialist literature and participate in courses taught in English (no proof required). Unless stated differently in the examination regulations, students will not be required to hand in coursework written in English, nor do they have to write exams or papers in English.

Applicants who have earned their degree or higher education entrance qualification at an institution where classes were not taught in German must have passed the Deutsche Sprachprüfung für den Hochschulzugang ausländischer Studienbewerber (German Language Proficiency Examination for Admission to Higher Education for Foreign Applicants), also called the DSH, with a minimum score of DSH-2.

If you apply to study without a preparatory German course - i.e. you choose a degree and subject in the online application - you need to submit the following certificates:
- An officially certified copy of the passed DSH-2-exam or an equivalent
- The following are recognized as equivalent of a passed DSH-2:
- das deutsche Abitur
- the Deutsche Sprachdiplom der Kultusministerkonferenz - Stufe II (DSD II)
- the Goethe-Zertifikat C2: Großes Deutsches Sprachdiplom (GDS)
- the Österreichische Sprachdiplom (ÖSD) - C1
- TestDaF with the result 4 x 4 or better (2 x 5 and 2 x 4 or better). Please notice: the result 4 x 4 is sufficent for enrollment but we recommend strongly to attend further German courses in order to ensure successful study. Recommended result to study successfully is 2 x 5 and 2 x 4 or better
- the exam from the preparatory course (Feststellungsprüfung) of a German preparatory college
