Kaad Scholarship

KAAD Scholarship offers a postgraduate scholarship to deserving students from countries in Africa, Asia, the Middle East or Latin America. The scholarship program is applicable for the students beginning masters or doctorate studies at the universities in Germany.

KAAD's scholarship work can be subsumed under three programmes-

Scholarship Programme 1

  • the Invitation Programme in cooperation with the focus countries and is aimed at postgraduates
  • In-country Programme for Master's studies in the home country: at fifteen locations in eight countries (Ethiopia, Ghana, Guatemala, Jordan, Kenya, Lebanon, Peru, Zimbabwe)
  • Third-country scholarships for students from other continents are possible at selected third-country locations. 

Scholarship Programme 2

Scholarship Programme 2 supports students from countries of the Global South who are already studying for their PhD or Master's degree in Germany. The Catholic University Chaplaincies have the right to propose suitable applicants.

The Eastern Europe Programme

The Eastern Europe Programme supports - in cooperation with the partner committees - PhD and Master's programmes, as well as shorter study and research stays in Germany.

  • The number of KAAD Scholarship varies every year.
  • Preference is given to the Catholic applicants.
  • KAAD Scholarship recipients are awarded the tuition fee waiver of their chosen program.

Recipients of the KAAD Scholarship are rewarded for the duration of the doctorate or master’s program at German University.

Eligibility Criteria

The KAAD scholarship is available to the students who fulfill the following conditions for eligibility:

  • Citizenship: belongs to a developing or emerging country in Africa, Asia, the Middle East or Latin America and is currently residing there.
  • Academic Qualification: A university degree and professional experience from the home country
  • Level of Study: Enrolling in a master’s degree or a Ph.D. at a German university or to conduct a postdoctoral research project at a German university.
  • Language Proficiency: Possess basic German Language proficiency before starting the studies (KAAD can provide a language course of max. 6 months in Germany)
  • Work experience
  • Above average potential for study or research

EXPECTATIONS :

  • An above-average performance potential for the study or research,
  • the focus of the studies or research on permanent reintegration in the respective home region (otherwise the scholarship is considered a loan),
  • Church and social engagement or readiness for interreligious dialogue
  • Knowledge of German with at least level B1 (or at least A2 for English-language courses) to participate in our compulsory education program. Preparatory German courses in the home country are expected. There is also the option of applying for a language course (full-time or alongside your studies).

Application Process

The first request is sent to KAAD's offices by filling out the KAAD Scholarship application form. The questionnaire will be sent, as the first step, to the interested persons.

Applicants may email their questions or contact the partner committee in their home country for detailed information on double-stage application procedures.

Applicants outside the country often have to meet specific requirements for English / other languages in order to study.


Selection Process

Scholarships at KAAD are available only to those who come from developing countries. Students must consider the following as selection criteria:

  • At KAAD, preference is given to Catholic applicants.
  • A limited number of Protestant Christians, Orthodox Christians and Muslims are given this scholarship.
  • Only in very rare instances are Catholic priests and religious eligible.

Once the candidate has applied, their application will be processed by the independent selection board


Grant Details

KAAD Scholarship program is offers to academically excellent students from Asia, Africa, the Middle East or Latin America.

KAAD pays for the recipient’s travel and accommodation in Germany and provides language training in Germany before their studies before they continue their studies.

Students can be expected to fulfill the below-mentioned qualities and promises by KAAD:

  • The above-average outcome in studies and research
  • The orientation or research of your studies towards continuous reintegration in the applicant’s home country.
  • The desire to participate in religious and social events and to engage in interreligious dialogue.

There is no specific preference as to subjects. The selection committee, however, has often favored classes and topics which it feels are important to the applicant's home country. This is particularly true for doctoral thesis subjects.
