Likes
- Activities like Karaoke, Pub Crawls, etc for international students
- Low semester contribution (fees)
- Semester ticket includes travel all throughout Germany (most public transports excluding some)
Dislikes
- Different values (relationships, social causes, etc.)
- Hard to get into German social circles as people already have groups
- Need for German language to integrate or for finding jobs
Campus Life
- Saarland University has three main campuses located in Saarbrücken, Homburg, and Dudweiler. The campuses feature comprehensive facilities, including libraries, sports facilities, and medical services.
- Major Events and Clubs Popular events include the ASta Music Festival and Night of the Profs. The university also has a variety of clubs, hangout locations and bars.
- Extracurricular Activities Students can engage in sports, music, theatre, film, and debate clubs, such as the Hochschulsport, ASta, ZiS, etc.
Fees
- Before every semester the students need to pay the semester contribution/fees which basically covers the semester ticket used to travel for free in buses/trains which amounts to nearly 315 Euros but may vary depending slightly on the programme. The semester ticket(Deutschland ticket) is valid throughout the semester and can be used to travel all through Germany. The fees also include some contributions to student clubs. Since UDS is a publicly funded University there is no program fees as such.
- The expenses greatly depends on an individual's lifestyle. Student dorms are usually cheaper and set you back by 240-350 Euros whereas WG or shared apartments cost you anything between 300 - 900 Euros on an average. Other expenses include Radio taxes (55.08 Euros), mandatory medical insurance (100-140 Euros), Wi-Fi bill, food and other costs which altogether comes to around 800-900 Euros per month.

- My most favourite thing is that we have many research organisations and can do technical part-time jobs rather than doing other services in restaurants, delivery etc.
- The courses offerred are top notch.
- The students (including Germans and other nationalities) are very inclusive and diverse.
Dislikes
- Not much of a night life and party life. (It didnt affect me but i know that a lot of people like this.)
- The city is very small. Convenience isn't the best
- Some courses are very very difficult to pass and is a reason why most people take super long to finish their degree (the longest i have heard is 4.5 years.))
Campus Life
- There are many departments other than computer science. Ours is one big campus with many buildings. There are 5-6 big libraries and one big library is entirely dedicated to the computer science department.
- Saarland University also has Hermann Neuberger Sportschule, which is an Olympics training academy. Neeraj Chopra, PV Sindhu and many others train on this campus. There are also many Indian celebrations that happen, so we don't feel left out.

- Only university with two MPIs on campus
- For CS program specifically you can choose courses depending on your preferred subfields like cyber security, DS/AI, etc.
Dislikes
- Can be a bit more theoretic at times.
- Some may find courses to be a bit more around DS/AI
- No other thing that i dislike about the university
Campus Life
- There are a lot of sports classes ranging from football to kickboxing and even salsa. Most classes are free, but some may need a minimal fee.
- The campus includes multiple libraries, a national sports complex and a hospital.
- The student committee organises plenty of events throughout the semester (DJ Profs night, where professors are DJing for their students).
Likes
- The course is really up to date and practically implementable.
- The staff and professors are really understanding overall.
Dislikes
- For some subjects I didn't like the organisation.
Campus Life
There are two campuses, but most studies take place in the main Saarbrücken one. There are 3-4 libraries (I think), a Sports Center, an administration office, etc. ZIS usually conducts various activities for students
Likes
- I chose this program because of its low tuition cost and high research output in a unique combination of linguistics and Computer Science, not found in many other universities around the world. It should be noted that, although Natural Language Processing is one aspect of the program, there are other aspects likely Psycholinguistics, Language Acquisition etc which you also get to learn about through this program. Such a unique offering of courses is what drew me to this program.
- Many Research Opportunities, Fantastic Faculty, Extremely International cohort, Many Social Events, Good location and so a lot of places to travel to during breaks.
Dislikes
- I don't really dislike anything about the College, as I aware of what I was getting into. Something that people should be wary about is that, knowing German in Germany is extremely important. Although the program is international, a lot of the administrative stuff at the beginning of your program needs to be completed in German. Therefore knowledge of the language would be a massive bonus to anyone joining.
Overview
My overall experience at my university was overwhelmingly positive. The international program provided me with a unique opportunity to immerse myself in different cultures and perspectives, fostering a sense of global citizenship. The research opportunities I was given allowed me to apply my theoretical knowledge to real-world problems, enhancing my critical thinking and problem-solving skills. The approachable and knowledgeable faculty members were always available to provide guidance and support, ensuring my academic success. The vibrant social scene and diverse student cohort offered a plethora of events and activities to unwind and connect with like-minded individuals. And having a central location in Western Europe provided me with the chance to travel extensively at relatively low cost, broadening my horizons and enriching my cultural understanding.
Campus Life
The program is extremely international, with 3-4 people per nationality. So, you get to explore many different cultures, and awareness levels in general grows. There are many extracurricular events spanning sports, dancing, theatre etc.
Likes
- My university is public university, meaning there is no tuition fees (just semester fees). The program itself is very interesting and my university is the most popular amongst all the European countries for this program. It gives more emphasis on research and aligns well with my goals.
- I liked the program, the department, the faculty, the options available for research and most importantly the diverse culture because of the international students.
- I have got the chance to be admitted into one of the competitive programs and also the chance to meet people across various parts of the world. Talented and motivated faculty has given me great exposure to the career opportunities available and also at the same time, captured my attention towards the systematic research.
Dislikes
- Saarbruecken is a medium-sized city and this makes it hard to get the jobs easily or even get the industrial exposure so easily. That is the only problem with the university. The rest of the aspects are totally fine by me.
Overview
It has been a roller coaster journey for me and as of now I am very satisfied with my life here and happy that I have made the right choice.
Campus Life
International Office and Student Council organize various fun and cultural events to ensure that the international crowd in Saarland university get to know the diversity. There are sports arenas, swimming pools, gyms for students. There is availability of WiFi throughout the campus. The research facilities include government funded programs of German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence - DFKI, Max Planck Institutes, CISPA, etc. and there are world class in the infrastructure.
Likes
- The German infrastructure for research in one of the best, and the lab I went for my postdoc is doing really well interms of research with many impactful publications in flagship journals.
- Infrastructure, facilities, ease of doing work, flexibility in working hours, my friends and colleagues, research supervisor and many more. In general I am acknowledge my Institute for every thing it gave me.
Dislikes
- Weather sometimes, another time excessive work, may be sometimes foods, overall there are very few things to complain about and I am more than happy during my stay in its camous.
Overview
In terms of infrastructure and facilities, the universities I have worked so far are world class having state of art equipments, vibrant campus life and best accommodation facilities. Having a chance to get interact with European culture with many European colleagues has helped me to build and develop a better character and adoptability.
Campus Life
It depends on which place you are staying, for example- during my postdoc in Germany, it was not much happening in the campus life and extracurricular sense, but IIT Bombay has a very vibrant campus life during my PhD with Asia largest cultural fest Mood Indigo etc.
