NIOS 2026 (National Institute of Open Schooling) is India’s largest open schooling board, operating under the Ministry of Education, Government of India, and offering Secondary (Class 10) and Senior Secondary (Class 12) board programmes through flexible Open and Distance Learning (ODL) mode. The April-May 2026 theory examinations concluded on May 6, 2026, and results are expected in June 2026. The ODE (On Demand Examination) Senior Secondary result for exams held from March 16–31, 2026 was declared on May 25, 2026, and the ODE Secondary result for the same period was declared on May 26, 2026.

  • April-May 2026 Result: NIOS Secondary and Senior Secondary results for the April-May 2026 session are expected in June 2026. What is NIOS?

NIOS — National Institute of Open Schooling — is an autonomous national board under the Ministry of Education, Government of India. It was first established as the Open School project under NCERT in 1979 and became an independent national board in 1989. NIOS is one of the world’s largest open schools, with cumulative enrollment running into crores of learners. Its headquarters is at A-24/25, Institutional Area, Sector-62, NOIDA, Uttar Pradesh.

The board offers Secondary (Class 10) and Senior Secondary (Class 12) board examinations, vocational education courses, and Open Basic Education (OBE) for adult learners and school dropouts. NIOS is fully recognised by the Council of Boards of School Education in India (COBSE), the Association of Indian Universities (AIU), and AICTE. This means an NIOS certificate holds the same value as a CBSE or state board certificate for college admissions, government jobs, and competitive exams.

NIOS is especially useful for students who could not complete regular schooling due to personal, health, or financial reasons; working adults and homemakers who want to continue their education at any age; students who failed Class 10 or 12 from other boards and need a second chance; and learners in remote areas who cannot attend daily school. There is no upper age limit for NIOS admission.

What Makes NIOS Unique

  • No strict attendance: You do not have to attend school daily. You study at home using the official Self-Learning Material (SLM).
  • Flexible subject choice: More than 46 subjects at Secondary level and over 60 subjects at Senior Secondary level — far wider than regular boards.
  • On Demand Exam (ODE): A computer-based exam that lets you appear for individual subjects at your chosen date and centre, without waiting for the fixed April-May or October-November session.
  • Transfer of Credit (TOC): If you have already cleared some subjects in another board, NIOS lets you carry forward those marks and appear only for the remaining subjects.
  • Multiple attempts: NIOS allows up to 9 exam attempts per subject — far more chances than any regular board.
  • Credit accumulation: Marks secured in a subject remain valid permanently. If you pass 3 subjects this session and 2 next session, all 5 are counted for the certificate.

The board operates through 23 Regional Centres, 2 Sub-Regional Centres, and more than 7,400 Accredited Institutions (AIs or Study Centres) across India. Regional Centres are located in cities including Allahabad, Bengaluru, Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, Chandigarh, Chennai, Dehradun, Delhi, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Kolkata, Mumbai, Patna, Pune, Ranchi, and Visakhapatnam.

NIOS Eligibility Criteria 2026

NIOS eligibility criteria 2026 are inclusive and flexible. There is no upper age limit for either programme. Here is what you need to know before applying.

Secondary (Class 10) Eligibility

  • Minimum Age: 14 years as on July 31 of the admission year
  • Academic Qualification: Must have passed Class 8 from any recognised board or school. Students who have not passed Class 8 formally can provide a self-certificate stating they have equivalent knowledge — NIOS accepts this for Secondary admission.
  • Failed Students: Students who failed Class 10 from CBSE, ICSE, or any state board can join NIOS under Stream 2 (Transfer of Credit) and clear only failed subjects.
  • Upper Age Limit: None — NIOS is open to learners of all ages

Senior Secondary (Class 12) Eligibility

  • Minimum Age: 15 years as on July 31 of the admission year
  • Academic Qualification: Must have passed Class 10 from NIOS or any other recognised board (CBSE, ICSE, state boards, or equivalent)
  • Failed Students: Students who failed Class 12 from any board can join NIOS under Stream 2 and appear only for failed subjects, carrying forward marks already secured
  • Upper Age Limit: None

Transfer of Credit (TOC) Facility

If you have already passed some subjects in Class 10 or Class 12 through another board (CBSE, state board, etc.) but could not clear all subjects, NIOS offers the Transfer of Credit (TOC) facility. You carry forward credits for subjects already passed and only appear for the remaining or failed subjects through NIOS. This avoids re-studying subjects you have already cleared.

Students who have previously appeared for Class 10 or Class 12 from any recognised board and want to improve marks in specific subjects should use the Transfer of Credit (TOC) facility. Do not take fresh admission — apply under the correct stream.

Documents Required

  • Passport-size photograph (scanned, recent)
  • Scanned signature
  • Class 8 marksheet/certificate (for Secondary) or Class 10 certificate (for Senior Secondary)
  • Date of birth proof (Aadhaar Card, birth certificate, or school leaving certificate)
  • Category certificate (for SC/ST/PH candidates claiming fee concession)

NIOS Admission Process 2026

NIOS admission is done fully online through the official SDMIS portal. There are two admission blocks per year. Here is how you can apply and what you need to know about admission streams, steps, and deadlines.

NIOS Admission Streams

Stream Who Should Apply Exam Mode
Stream 1 Fresh learners with no previous board enrollment Public Exam (Apr-May or Oct-Nov)
Stream 2 Students who failed Class 10 or 12 from CBSE, ICSE, or state boards — Transfer of Credit Public Exam (Apr-May or Oct-Nov)
Stream 3 NIOS students who have already passed and want to improve marks in specific subjects On Demand Exam (ODE)
Stream 4 NIOS students who failed in one or more subjects and want to clear them On Demand Exam (ODE)

NIOS Exam Pattern 2026

The NIOS 2026 exam pattern is different for Secondary and Senior Secondary levels. Both use a combination of theory papers, Tutor Marked Assignments (TMA), and practicals where applicable. Understanding this pattern helps you plan your time and focus correctly.

Secondary (Class 10) Exam Pattern 2026

Theory Paper 80 Marks 60 Marks
Practical Exam Not Applicable 30 Marks
TMA (Tutor Marked Assignment) 20 Marks 10 Marks
Total per Subject 100 Marks 100 Marks
Number of Subjects Minimum 5, Maximum 7 (at least 1 language from Group A)
Exam Duration 3 hours per paper

Subjects with practical component at Senior Secondary level include: Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Home Science, Psychology (where applicable), Painting, and other science/applied subjects. For these, you must score 33% in theory and 33% in practicals separately.

About TMA — Tutor Marked Assignment

TMA is a mandatory home assignment that you complete on your own and submit to your AI tutor before each exam session. The tutor evaluates it and awards marks. TMA carries 20% of total subject marks in Class 10 and 10–20% in Class 12. These marks are added to your theory result before the grade is calculated. Submitting a well-written TMA can significantly boost your overall marks, especially if your theory performance is average.

TMA submission is compulsory before every exam session. If you do not submit TMA to your AI tutor on time, NIOS will withhold your result for that subject. Do not miss the TMA deadline.

  • The ODE datesheet for the June–September 2026 session was released on May 14, 2026. Eligible learners can now register and book exam slots at sdmis.nios.ac.in.

Who Can Appear for ODE?

Stream Eligibility for ODE
Stream 3 NIOS students who have passed their certificate but want to improve marks in one or more subjects
Stream 4 NIOS students who failed in one or more subjects and want to clear them

Stream 1 and Stream 2 students (fresh admissions or transfer students) cannot use ODE. They must appear in the regular April-May or October-November public exams.

Key Features of NIOS ODE 2026

  • Mode: Computer-Based Test (CBT) — held at NIOS Regional Centres and the NOIDA headquarters
  • Question Paper: Generated randomly from a large verified question bank. Each student gets a different set of questions, but the overall difficulty level is maintained consistently across all candidates.
  • Availability: ODE is conducted throughout the year except April, May, October, and November (reserved for public exams)
  • Slot Booking: You must book your exam slot at least 15 days in advance. Seats are limited — early booking is advisable, especially for popular subjects.
  • Result Speed: ODE results are typically declared within 2–4 weeks after the exam session concludes
  • Number of Subjects: You can appear for one or more subjects in each ODE session

NIOS Grading System and Passing Criteria 2026

NIOS uses a letter-grade system based on total marks (theory + TMA + practical where applicable). You need to score at least 33% in each subject to pass. Here is the complete NIOS 2026 grading system.

NIOS Grade Scale

Grade Marks Range (%) Performance Level
A 80% and above Outstanding
B 65% – 79% Very Good
C 50% – 64% Good
D 35% – 49% Satisfactory
E (Fail) Below 33% Not Certified

Source: nios.ac.in — Evaluation System

NIOS 2026 Passing Rules

  • You must score minimum 33% in each subject to be certified for that subject (Grade D or above)
  • For Senior Secondary subjects with practicals (Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Home Science, etc.), you must pass theory and practical separately — 33% in theory marks and 33% in practical marks. A high practical score cannot compensate for failing theory.
  • TMA marks are added to theory marks before calculating your final grade
  • You need to pass a minimum of 5 subjects (including at least 1 language) to receive the NIOS passing certificate
  • If you fail in 1–2 subjects, you can clear them in the next public exam session or through ODE without re-registering
  • NIOS allows up to 9 exam attempts per subject — you have many chances to pass

Credit Accumulation: NIOS’s Key Advantage

Marks you score in any subject remain permanently valid in NIOS. If you pass 3 subjects in the April-May session and 2 subjects in the October-November session, all 5 are counted together for your certificate. You never lose credit for subjects already passed. This credit accumulation system makes NIOS ideal for students who need to spread out their preparation over multiple sessions.

NIOS Fee Structure 2026

NIOS keeps admission fees affordable. The fee structure is divided into registration fee, subject fee, and exam fee paid separately each session. SC/ST/PH students receive concessions. Here is the 2026 fee structure.

Admission Fee (Per Subject, Public Exam)

Component Secondary (Class 10) Senior Secondary (Class 12)
Registration Fee (one-time) Approx. ₹50 Approx. ₹50
Subject Fee — General Category Approx. ₹300–600 per subject Approx. ₹300–700 per subject

Transfer of Credit (TOC) Fee Approx. ₹230 per subject Approx. ₹230 per subject
SC/ST/PH Concession Concession available Concession available

ODE Fee 2026

Component Fee
Theory Exam (per subject) ₹600
Practical Component (additional, per subject) ₹250

All NIOS fees are non-refundable once paid. Double-check your subject selections, study centre, and personal details before completing payment.

NIOS Study Material and Preparation Tips

NIOS provides all official study material through its Self-Learning Material (SLM) system. Since there is no regular school to attend, your preparation discipline and use of available resources determine your exam performance. Here is everything you need to prepare well for NIOS 2026.

NIOS Official Study Resources

  • SLM Textbooks (Printed): NIOS provides printed Self-Learning Material modules for each subject. You receive them through your AI (Study Centre). These textbooks are designed for self-study and cover the complete syllabus.
  • Free PDF Downloads: All NIOS SLM modules for Secondary and Senior Secondary are available free at nios.ac.in under "Student Information Section → Syllabus and Study Material."
  • ePathshala App: NIOS’s free app (Android and iOS) has all textbooks, audio-visual lessons, sample papers, and previous year question papers in one place.
  • NIOS YouTube Channel: Subject-wise video lectures by NIOS teachers are available free on the official NIOS YouTube channel. Especially useful for Science, Mathematics, and Commerce subjects.
  • Swayam Platform: Several NIOS-aligned courses are available free at swayam.gov.in — the Government of India’s MOOC platform.
  • Previous Year Question Papers: NIOS uploads at least 5 years of previous year question papers and sample papers at nios.ac.in. Practising these is one of the most effective ways to prepare.
  • Personal Contact Programme (PCP): Your AI (Study Centre) holds PCP sessions — short classroom meetings with a NIOS tutor. Typically 30–40 hours per subject per year are recommended. Attending PCPs helps with difficult topics and TMA guidance.

Practical Preparation Tips for NIOS 2026

  • Start with SLM first: NIOS exam questions come directly from the Self-Learning Material. Read each chapter carefully before using any supplementary book. The SLM is free to download at nios.ac.in.
  • Submit TMA early: TMA carries 10–20 marks per subject. Submit it to your AI tutor well before the deadline — a good TMA score significantly boosts your overall grade.
  • Practise previous year papers: The NIOS question pattern is consistent from year to year. Solving 3–5 years of past papers per subject gives you confidence and helps you manage exam time effectively.
  • Attend PCP sessions: Even if you are a working adult, try to attend at least a few PCP classes at your AI. Teachers explain high-weightage chapters and often guide you on TMA answers.
  • No negative marking — attempt everything: In all NIOS theory papers, there is no negative marking. Write answers for all questions, even if you are not fully sure of the answer.
  • Focus on language subjects: Passing a language subject is mandatory for the NIOS certificate. Do not underestimate grammar, letter writing, and essay questions in English or Hindi.
  • Science students — attend practicals at AI: For Physics, Chemistry, and Biology, you must maintain a lab record at your AI and score 33% in practicals independently. Keep up with practical sessions scheduled at your Study Centre.
  • Make short notes by chapter: SLM modules are detailed. Make one-page summary notes for each chapter during your study — these help enormously in the final revision before the exam.
  • October-November 2026 exam timeline: With theory exams from October 3, 2026, you have roughly 4 months from today (May 28, 2026) to prepare. That is adequate time if you start now and study consistently.

NIOS Certificate: Recognition and Validity

The NIOS Secondary and Senior Secondary passing certificates are fully recognised by the Government of India and are treated as equivalent to CBSE or any state board certificate. You can use an NIOS certificate for college admissions, government job applications, professional courses, and competitive exams.

Where is NIOS Certificate Accepted?

  • Higher Education: UGC and AICTE recognise NIOS certificates for admission to degree and diploma programmes. Most central universities, state universities, deemed universities, and private colleges accept NIOS-qualified students.
  • Government Jobs: NIOS Class 10 and Class 12 certificates are valid for all government job applications that require Class 10 or Class 12 as minimum qualification — including SSC, railway, banking, defence, and state government jobs.
  • Competitive Exams: NIOS Class 12 is accepted for NDA, SSC CGL, SSC CHSL, UPSC, banking, and railway competitive exams. For NDA, JEE, and NEET, you need Physics, Chemistry, and the relevant subjects in your NIOS Class 12.
  • Professional and Vocational Courses: NIOS certificates are valid for admission to ITIs, polytechnics, B.Ed, D.El.Ed, nursing, hotel management, and other professional programmes.
  • Abroad: NIOS certificates are recognised internationally through the Association of Indian Universities (AIU). Many foreign universities and institutions accept NIOS-qualified students. Students can get an AIU equivalence certificate if required by a foreign institution.

NIOS and JEE / NEET Eligibility

NIOS Class 12 certificates are accepted for JEE Main, JEE Advanced, and NEET UG by the National Testing Agency (NTA). For JEE, you must have Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics in your NIOS Senior Secondary. For NEET, you must have Physics, Chemistry, and Biology. You also need to meet the minimum percentage criteria — 75% aggregate for JEE (General category) and 50% aggregate for NEET (General category).

Certificate Issuance Timeline

The original NIOS passing certificate and marksheet are issued approximately 6 months after the declaration of results. Until then, the provisional marksheet downloaded from results.nios.ac.in is your official proof of qualification. Use it for all admissions, job applications, and other purposes. Collect your original certificate from your Accredited Institution or Regional Centre once NIOS issues it.

If any institution claims your NIOS certificate is not valid, you can cite the official AIU and UGC recognition. NIOS is a national board — its certificates are legally equivalent to CBSE and all state boards across India.

ODE is available throughout the year except April, May, October, and November. It is open to Stream 3 students (NIOS passed students wanting to improve marks) and Stream 4 students (failed NIOS students wanting to clear failed subjects). Fresh admission students (Stream 1 and 2) must appear in regular public exams and cannot use ODE.

Ans. Log in at sdmis.nios.ac.in with your NIOS enrollment number. Go to the "On Demand Examination" section, select your subjects, choose an exam centre and available date (book at least 15 days in advance). Pay the ODE fee online — ₹600 per theory subject and ₹250 additional for subjects with a practical component. Download your ODE hall ticket after payment and appear at the selected centre on your exam date. The ODE datesheet for June–September 2026 was released on May 14, 2026.

Ques. Is there an upper age limit for NIOS admission?

Ans. No. There is no upper age limit for NIOS admission — you can enrol at any age. The minimum age for Secondary (Class 10) is 14 years and for Senior Secondary (Class 12) is 15 years, as on July 31 of the admission year. NIOS is very popular among working adults, homemakers, senior citizens, and anyone who could not complete schooling at the regular age.

Ques. What happens if I fail in one or two subjects in NIOS?

Ans. If you fail (receive Grade E) in one or two subjects in NIOS, you do not lose the marks you already scored in subjects you cleared. Your passed subjects remain valid permanently. You can re-appear for failed subjects in the next public exam session (April-May or October-November) without re-registering, or through ODE if you are an eligible learner. NIOS allows up to 9 exam attempts per subject, giving you many opportunities to clear it.
