NCERT Solutions for Class 8 Maths Chapter 13 Direct and Inverse Proportions Exercise 13.1 is provided for the students in pdf format. Exercise 13.1 broadly covers the topic of direct proportions. The students must hence understand the meaning of the term direct variation which can be briefly summarized as

When the value of one quantity, say x, is dependent on the value of another quantity, say y, such that the value of x and y either increase or decrease together, then x is said to be in direct proportion with y. The x to y ratio hence remains a constant. Direct proportion is represented by the symbol ‘∝‘. Mathematically,

x/y = k

Where k is a constant.

Example From Chapter 13 Direct and Inverse Proportions

Ques. A colony of bacteria attained a length of 3cm when it enlarged 60000 times. Determine the length of the colony when the bacteria enlarged 10000 times only.

Soln: Let us tabulate the given relation as follows:

Length of bacteria 3 x
Enlargement of bacteria 60000 10000

Therefore, mathematically the relation can be expressed as

3/60000=x/10000

Hence, x=(3×10000)/60000

The value of x =½ cm

Therefore,

Length of bacteria = 0.5 cm.
