FMGE 2026, or the Foreign Medical Graduate Examination 2026, is conducted by the National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS) twice a year — in June and December. For the June 2026 session, registration has closed and the exam is confirmed for June 28, 2026, with more than 40,000 candidates expected to appear at 67 exam centres across India. Candidates are now in the final preparation phase with less than a month left to the exam.
- Admit Card: The FMGE June 2026 admit card is expected on June 24, 2026 — 4 days before the exam. In the December 2025 session, NBEMS released the hall ticket approximately 4–5 days before the exam date. You should keep your login credentials ready to download it immediately.
- Exam Date: FMGE June 2026 will be held on June 28, 2026 in CBT mode across 67 cities. The exam has two parts of 150 questions each, with a total duration of 5 hours. You need to score at least 150 out of 300 to pass.
- Result: The FMGE June 2026 result is expected in the last week of July 2026. In the December 2025 session (held January 17, 2026), NBEMS declared results within 12 days of the exam. Individual scorecards are typically released 1–2 weeks after the result.
- December 2026 Session: If you are not appearing in June 2026, the next session is expected around January 2027 (the December 2025 session was held on January 17, 2026). Registrations for the December 2026 session are likely to open in October 2026. You can attempt FMGE any number of times — there is no limit on attempts.
What is FMGE 2026?
FMGE stands for Foreign Medical Graduates Examination. It is a licensing screening test conducted by the National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS) for Indian citizens and Overseas Citizens of India (OCI) who have completed their MBBS degree from a foreign medical university and wish to practice medicine in India.
The exam is mandatory under the National Medical Commission (NMC) Act. Without clearing FMGE, a foreign medical graduate cannot register with the NMC or any State Medical Council (SMC) and therefore cannot practice as a doctor in India.
FMGE is conducted twice a year — a June session and a December session. The exam is held in Computer-Based Test (CBT) mode. It has 300 multiple-choice questions carrying 300 marks, and you need to score at least 150 (50%) to qualify. There is no negative marking.
More than 40,000 candidates appear in each session. The pass rate has historically been low — ranging between 10% and 30% — making it one of the more challenging medical licensing exams in the country.
Note: FMGE is a qualification exam, not a ranking exam. There is no merit list or cutoff based on rank. Scoring 150 out of 300 (50%) is the only qualifying threshold.

FMGE 2026 Syllabus
The FMGE 2026 syllabus covers the complete MBBS curriculum as prescribed by the National Medical Commission (NMC) for Indian medical colleges. All 19 subjects included in the exam are part of a standard MBBS program. Since 2023, the trend in FMGE has shifted towards more clinical application-based MCQs — scenario questions rather than pure memory-recall questions.
High-Priority Subjects for FMGE June 2026
- General Medicine (33 marks): ECG interpretation, diabetes management, thyroid disorders, stroke, anaemia, hypertension, tuberculosis, respiratory diseases. Clinical case scenarios are increasingly common.

FMGE 2026 Preparation Tips
With just about one month left for FMGE June 2026, you should now be in intensive revision mode — not studying new content from scratch. Here is a focused strategy for the final phase of preparation.
Last-Month Strategy (May 29 – June 28, 2026)
- Focus on high-weightage subjects first: Medicine (33), Surgery (32), OBG (30), and Community Medicine (30) together give 125 marks. Scoring well in just these 4 subjects takes you more than 80% of the way to the 150-mark pass threshold. Spend 60% of your remaining time here.
- Take full-length mock tests every 2–3 days: Simulate real exam conditions — 150 questions in Part A, break, then 150 questions in Part B. Time yourself strictly (50 minutes per section). This builds stamina and exam-day time management.
- Attempt every question: There is no negative marking. Never leave a question blank. Even an educated guess gives you a chance at an additional mark.
- Focus on image-based questions: FMGE 2026 has more ECG, X-ray, histology, and CT scan questions. Practice recognising common patterns — Colles’ fracture on X-ray, ECG of MI, IUCD placement, histology of carcinomas.
- Use previous year papers: Solve at least the last 5 years of FMGE papers (both June and December sessions). Mudit Khanna’s FMGE Solutions is the most widely recommended resource for this.
- Maintain a High-Yield Notebook: Note down confusing MCQs, important drug side effects, normal lab values, and commonly tested facts. Review this notebook in the last 7 days.
- No new topics in the last 10 days: Switch entirely to revision, mock tests, and your high-yield notebook. Starting new topics at this stage creates confusion.

Note: December sessions consistently show higher pass rates than June sessions. The all-time high was in December 2022 (~30.83%) when a large number of candidates rushed to clear FMGE ahead of the expected NExT exam rollout.
Country-wise Pass Rate Trends
The FMGE pass rate varies significantly based on the country where candidates completed their MBBS. Candidates from Nepal consistently perform best due to the near-identical curriculum to Indian medical colleges.
| Country | Approximate Pass Rate | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Nepal | 30–70% | Nearly identical curriculum to India |
| Georgia | ~35.65% | English-medium curriculum, good clinical training |
| Philippines | ~24% | English-medium, US clinical standards |
| Russia | ~29.54% | Moderate — large candidate pool (~11,000+ per session) |
| Bangladesh | ~26.79% | Similar regional curriculum |
| China | ~19.21% | Largest candidate pool; Mandarin-medium clinical training is a challenge |
| Kazakhstan / Kyrgyzstan | 15–18% | Russian-medium instruction; lower clinical English proficiency |
| Ukraine | ~9–12% | Declining further due to disruptions from ongoing conflict |

| FMGE Pass Certificate Issued | 2–3 months after result (September–October 2026) |
FMGE 2026 Qualifying Marks and Cutoff
FMGE does not have a merit-based cutoff. Unlike NEET UG or NEET PG, there is no ranking or category-wise cutoff list. The qualifying threshold is fixed and uniform for all candidates.
FMGE Qualifying Marks
| Category | Qualifying Marks | Qualifying Percentage |
|---|---|---|
| All Candidates (General / SC / ST / OBC / OCI) | 150 out of 300 | 50% |
There is no category-based relaxation in FMGE qualifying marks. All candidates — regardless of caste, category, or country of study — must score at least 150 out of 300 to pass.
Scoring exactly 150 means you have passed. There is no distinction between candidates who score 150 and those who score 280. Both are equally qualified. The FMGE Pass Certificate is issued to everyone who meets the 150-mark threshold.
However, scoring well above 150 is advisable as a buffer. Given that the exam has no negative marking, you should attempt all 300 questions. An unanswered question is a missed opportunity.
After FMGE: What Happens Next?
Passing FMGE is not the final step to practice medicine in India. After clearing the exam, you need to complete a structured process to get your medical license. Here is what happens after you pass FMGE 2026.
Step-by-Step Post-FMGE Process
- Step 1 — Collect FMGE Pass Certificate: NBEMS issues the FMGE Pass Certificate approximately 2–3 months after the result. This is the foundational document for everything that follows. Keep it safe — you will need it for NMC registration, internship, and future PG applications.
- Step 2 — Apply for Provisional Registration: Apply to the National Medical Commission (NMC) or your State Medical Council (SMC) for provisional registration. This allows you to work as a trainee doctor within a recognized hospital. You need the FMGE Pass Certificate, your MBBS degree, marksheets, and identity proof.
- Step 3 — Complete 12-Month Internship in India: You must complete a compulsory rotating internship at an NMC-approved hospital in India. This cannot be done abroad. The internship covers all clinical departments in rotation.
- Step 4 — Apply for Permanent Registration: After completing the internship, apply to the NMC or SMC for permanent registration. Once approved, you get a permanent medical registration number and the license to practice medicine independently anywhere in India.
- Step 5 — Eligibility for PG Courses: With permanent registration, you are eligible to apply for postgraduate medical courses in India (NEET PG or the upcoming NExT Step 2).
Provisional vs Permanent Registration
| Feature | Provisional Registration | Permanent Registration |
|---|---|---|
| When Granted | After passing FMGE | After completing 12-month internship |
| Issued By | NMC or State Medical Council | NMC or State Medical Council |
| Allows | Practice as intern/trainee in approved hospital only | Independent practice of medicine anywhere in India |
| PG Eligibility | Not eligible | Eligible to apply for PG courses |
FMGE and NExT — What You Should Know
The National Medical Commission has announced plans to replace FMGE with the National Exit Test (NExT). NExT will unify the licensing pathway for both Indian medical graduates and foreign medical graduates.
- NExT is expected to be implemented from 2027 onwards. No official launch date has been confirmed as of May 2026.
- For the 2026 June and December sessions, FMGE remains the valid and operative examination. You should continue with your FMGE preparation without waiting for NExT.
- NExT will have two parts: Step 1 (theory MCQs, similar to FMGE format but broader in scope) and Step 2 (clinical skills assessment).
- Candidates currently in the FMGE system will likely continue under FMGE until NExT is formally rolled out.
The December 2022 spike in FMGE pass rate (nearly 30.83%) was partly attributed to candidates rushing to clear FMGE before NExT was expected to replace it. A similar rush is not expected in 2026 as the NExT timeline has been pushed further.
