What is BITS HD 2027?

BITS HD stands for BITS Higher Degree Admission Test. It is a national-level entrance exam conducted by BITS Pilani (Birla Institute of Technology and Science) for admission to M.E. (Master of Engineering) and M.Pharm (Master of Pharmacy) programmes. BITS Pilani runs these programmes across three campuses — Pilani in Rajasthan, Goa, and Hyderabad.

BITS HD has a dual admission route that is unique among postgraduate engineering entrance exams. For most programmes, you can apply either by appearing for the BITS HD written test or by using a valid GATE or GPAT score. BITS divides seats equally — 50% go to the GATE/GPAT merit list and 50% go to the BITS HD test merit list. These are completely separate lists with no overlap. The only exception is M.E. in Software Systems, which accepts only the BITS HD test score and does not consider GATE scores.

BITS HD 2027 Eligibility Criteria

Before you apply for BITS HD 2027, you must check all eligibility conditions carefully. BITS Pilani is strict about the minimum marks requirement and does not round off percentages. Meeting 59.9% does not qualify.

Nationality

Only Indian nationals can apply for BITS HD 2027. There is no admission pathway for foreign nationals through this test.

Qualifying Degree

• For M.E. programmes: You need a B.E., B.Tech, or M.Sc. degree in a discipline relevant to your chosen M.E. specialization. Candidates with an Integrated First Degree from BITS Pilani in the respective discipline are also eligible.
• For M.Pharm programmes: You need a B.Pharm degree from a recognised university.
• Students in their final year of the qualifying degree can apply. Admission will be provisional until you submit your final marksheet showing the required marks.

Minimum Marks

You need a minimum aggregate of 60% in your qualifying degree. BITS Pilani does not accept any rounding off. A score of 59.9% or below does not meet the eligibility threshold, regardless of your GATE rank or BITS HD test performance.

BITS Pilani does not apply any relaxation in the 60% minimum marks requirement, even for reserved category candidates. Confirm the current year’s relaxation policy in the official 2027 brochure.

GATE and GPAT Score Validity

If you hold a valid GATE or GPAT score, you can apply through the merit-based route without taking the BITS HD written test. You must still register on the BITS HD portal — there is no separate window for GATE candidates. For BITS HD 2026, GATE scores from 2024, 2025, and 2026 were accepted (three-year validity). For BITS HD 2027, GATE scores from 2025, 2026, and 2027 are expected to be valid.

BITS HD 2027 Application Process

The BITS HD 2027 application will be fully online at bitsadmission.com. There is no offline mode. Registration is expected to open in February 2027 and close in April 2027, following the same timeline as 2026.

Step-by-Step: How to Apply for BITS HD 2027

1. Visit the official website: Go to bitsadmission.com once the 2027 notification is live. Do not register on any third-party portal.
2. Create a login: Register with your email ID and set a password to create your account on the admissions portal.
3. Fill the application form: Enter personal details, academic qualifications, GATE/GPAT score (if applicable), and your programme and campus preferences in order of priority.
4. Upload documents: Upload scanned copies of your photograph, signature, and qualifying degree marksheet in the specified format and size.
5. Pay the application fee: Pay online through net banking, credit card, or debit card. The fee is non-refundable.
6. Submit and save confirmation: Review all entries, submit the form, and save the confirmation page along with your application number for future use.

Application Correction Window

After the registration deadline closes, BITS Pilani opens a short correction window. In 2026, this was on 22 April 2026 — just two days after the registration deadline of 20 April. You can use this window to fix errors in your form, update documents, or revise programme preferences. No further changes are allowed after this window closes.

BITS HD 2027 Syllabus

The BITS HD 2027 syllabus has two parts. Test I is common for all candidates and covers general aptitude. Test II is discipline-specific and covers core engineering or pharmacy subjects at the bachelor’s degree level. BITS HD 2027 Admit Card

The BITS HD 2027 admit card will be available online at bitsadmission.com a few days before the exam. In 2026, it was released on 21 May 2026 — four days before the 25 May exam. For 2027, you can expect the admit card in the third or fourth week of May 2027 if the exam follows the same May timeline.

Only candidates who registered for the BITS HD written test need to download the admit card. GATE/GPAT candidates who applied through the merit route but chose not to appear for the test do not need an admit card for the written exam.

How to Download BITS HD 2027 Admit Card

2. Click on the BITS HD 2027 Admit Card link in the admissions section.
3. Log in with your application number and password.
4. Download and print the admit card. Keep at least two printed copies — one for entry and one as a backup.

BITS Pilani maintains two completely separate merit lists for every programme at every campus — one for GATE/GPAT candidates and one for BITS HD test candidates. These lists are independent. Your rank on the GATE merit list is unrelated to your rank on the BITS HD test merit list.

M.E. Software Systems is the only programme that does NOT accept GATE scores. You must appear for the BITS HD written test to be considered for this programme.

M.Pharm Programmes at BITS (Based on 2026 Pattern)

M.Pharm admissions follow the same 50:50 split — 50% seats via GPAT merit and 50% via BITS HD test merit. You must still register on the BITS HD portal regardless of which route you are applying through.

Programme Duration and Fees

• Duration: 2 years (4 semesters) for both M.E. and M.Pharm
• Approximate first-year tuition fee (2026–27): Rs. 6,94,575 (excluding hostel and mess charges)
• Teaching Assistantship (TA): Some meritorious BITS HD test candidates may be eligible for a Teaching Assistantship, which includes a monthly stipend in exchange for academic support duties. Eligibility criteria and stipend amount are published in the official brochure each year.

BITS HD 2027 Preparation Tips

With the BITS HD 2027 exam expected in May 2027, you have roughly seven to eight months to prepare from now (September 2026). Here are specific tips based on the BITS HD test structure and the dual GATE-plus-test strategy that gives you the best chance at admission.

Test I: Core Mathematics, English, and Logical Reasoning

• Core Mathematics (Test I carries ~45 marks): Focus on Calculus, Linear Algebra, and Differential Equations. These are standard engineering mathematics topics that also appear in GATE’s Engineering Mathematics section. Revise using standard B.E./B.Tech textbooks and solve previous GATE engineering maths questions for practice.
• English: Work on grammar rules and reading comprehension passages regularly. Short practice sessions of 15–20 minutes daily with sentence correction and vocabulary exercises are enough to build consistent marks in this section.
• Logical Reasoning: Practice analogy, series completion, and data chart interpretation questions from standard aptitude books. Aim to finish all 30 Test I questions within 40 minutes, leaving the remaining 5 minutes as a buffer before Test II begins.

Test II: Discipline-Specific Preparation

• Align with GATE preparation: Test II syllabus closely follows the GATE syllabus for your discipline. If you are preparing for GATE 2027, your Test II preparation is largely covered. The two exams reward the same knowledge base.
• Download the official BITS HD syllabus: Once the 2027 brochure is out, download the discipline-specific syllabus PDF. Some topics in Test II may go slightly deeper than GATE or cover slightly different sub-topics — cover everything listed in the brochure.
• Solve previous GATE papers for Test II: Past GATE papers (last 5 years) for your discipline are the single best source of Test II practice. They are at the right level and format.
• Practice under timed conditions: Test II has 70 questions in 105 minutes — that is 90 seconds per question on average. Solve timed mock tests regularly to build both speed and confidence.

Overall Strategy

• Appear for GATE 2027 — this is non-negotiable: A strong GATE score qualifies you for BITS HD Iteration 1 before the written test. You could secure a seat at Hyderabad or even Goa in early May — weeks before you sit the HD exam. GATE scores are valid for three years, so a 2027 score also works for BITS HD 2028 and 2029.
• Manage negative marking: In your practice tests, mark each question as "confident", "uncertain", or "skip". Attempt only "confident" questions in the exam. Revisit "uncertain" ones only if time remains. A wrong answer costs you 4 marks relative to a correct one (+3 correct vs −1 wrong — a net difference of 4).
• Know your preferences before registering: Research which GATE paper code maps to your desired BITS HD programme before you fill the application form.
