Master of Science [M.Sc] (Geography)

Course Structure

The course consists of compulsory papers and optional papers. M.Sc. Geography follows semester scheme. There will be a minimum of 4 theory courses and one practical course in each semester up to 3rd semester. However in the fourth semester there will be three theory courses and one dissertation. Each course will be of 100 marks and dissertation will be of 200 marks.

Scheme of Assessment

A student in assessed on the basis of written exam and internal assessment at the end of every 4 semesters that are carried out with the ratio of 80:20. 20 marks of internal assessment includes marks of class assignments, seminar, test, and quiz.  Each course carries 100 marks in total.

Climatology And Soil Geography

Climate Nature And Change, Climatic change of recent time, Role of Global warming and ENSO, Morphogenetic regions and Pedogeomorphic Processes.

The course gives the details about climate and soil.

Nature Of Geography

Philosophy of Geo-science, Geographic methodology and Explanation in

Geography, Approaches to Regional Studies, Physical Geography and Human Geography, Idiographic and Nomothetic, Geographic perception of space and locality with special emphasis on behavioural space.

Following course gives all the important details about geography.

Economic Geography

Factors controlling resource use, Carrying capacity and resource management, The physical bases of economic geography, Economic bases of economic geography, Concept of distance, accessibility and connectivity: interregional and intraregional.

The course is studies for resource analysis in Geography.

Quantitative Techniques And Digital Data Processing

Regression: Linear and Curvilinear, Residuals, Standard Error Estimate and ‘t ‘and ‘F ‘test, Matrix Algebra, Factor Analysis: Centroid method, Principal Component Analysis, Time Series Analysis.

This course teaches the mathematical concepts used in geography.

Geography of India

Major terrain elements of India and their role in shaping physical landscapes of India, Drainage systems of India and their functional significance, Regional and seasonal variations in climate and climate regions of India, Soil and vegetation types of India- their distribution, characteristics and conservation.

This course focuses on the geography of India in particular.

Population Geography

Nature and scope of population geography, Methodological problems in population geography, Sources of population data, quality and reliability of data, problems of mapping population data, Demographic Transition Model.

The course focuses on the importance of population geography.

Regional Development and Planning

Regional Development, Concept of Space and Region, Typology of Regions, Planning

Regions, planning regions of India and their characteristics, Theory of Polarized Development, F. Perroux Model, Hirschman Theory, Myrdal Theory.

This course studies the scope of regional development.

Ans. NIT Rourkela is better for a Masters in Geology. It offers better facilities. Geology department has well-equipped labs with latest technologies. The campus has an active research environment. There is cutting-edge ongoing research in the field of Earth and Atmospheric Science.  Although NIT Rourkela is the better option in terms of academics and research culture, IIT Bhubaneswar has a locational advantage. Ans. Very few IITs in India offer Geology and all of them follow the same curriculum. The faculties at IIT Bhubaneswar is well qualified and experienced. Given below are a few advantages of choosing geology at IIT Bhubaneswar:- One of the parts of the IIT Bhubaneswar campus is close to Chilka lake, which is used for ocean and navel geology based courses, it is probably the only IIT in the country with such practical facilities available. Being one of the most culturally effervescent cities in the country and having a tropical savanna climate, Bhubaneswar is the most suitable for the field of climate and ocean research. There are a large number of elective courses of the geology department that are available in IIT Bhubaneswar with a few notable ones being Glacial Geoscience, Modelling and Stimulation, and many others. There are about 11 elective courses in MSc Geology each having 3 contact hours and 3 credits and divided between semesters(I and II) and (III and IV).
