M.E. Thermal Engineering is a Post Graduate course in the domain of mechanical engineering with a specialization in the field of thermal process and thermodynamics related aspects. The structure of the course is based on the semester-wise breakup of examinations. A minimum of 55% (relaxable for reserved category candidates) marks at the UG level is the least that almost all the institutes desire from applying candidates as the eligibility criterion. The average fee for the course varies between INR 60,000 to 4,50,000 in India. The variation in fee is based on the location and nature of the university (that is government, state/private/deemed, etc.).

Admissions to the course are done based on the Common Entrance Test (CET) based selection method as well as merit-based selection criteria which is the percentage of marks obtained at Under Graduate (UG) level. Most of the colleges that provide admissions through the CET mechanism rely on the score of All India level common entrance exams like GATE (Graduate Aptitude Test for Engineering), while a select few opt for a separate entrance exam of their own (Like LPUNEST).

M.E. Thermal Engineering postgraduates have a wide range of job opportunities like Safety engineer, Project engineer, Structural engineer, Design engineer, etc. After completion of post-graduation, students can pursue further studies (like M.Phil and Ph.D.) in the said subject or may take up job opportunities. The average salary ranges between INR 16,000 and 20,000 a month for a fresh pass out.

M.E. Thermal Engineering: What is it about?

The study of temperature which is the degree of hotness or coolness of a substance, or structure is the concerned area for thermal studies. Today, where power is generated at a large scale and distributed through multiple channels the importance of thermal studies, has become all the more important.

As a sub-division of Mechanical Engineering, Thermal engineering deals with the thermal properties of materials, body, and substances so, as to define their usage and utility in the design and structuring of power generation equipment that dissipate heat in large amount.

A master’s level course in this specialization of mechanical engineering aims at providing in-depth subject knowledge and skills to the bachelor’s pass out so as to build the competence and ability in them to handle the practical life challenges that would be put forward to them at the industrial level.

Placement Experience

Placement is very good in our college, I should say best in Chhattisgarh. Apart from that placement the also provide internship courses. During recruitment drive, we just have to bring our that degree and all certificates only. It was too easy. recruitment takes place in many steps. Firstly we have to pass the written exam then we have a group discussion then we have that personal interview then finally you are qualified for that job.

Course Curriculum Overview

In M.Tech you have many practicals and less theoretical parts where we learn more about the machines and industrial training. It helps a lot to understand the actual problems and to deal with it. Apart from those regular classes we have we also have industrial training. The college also organised much industrial training in our college in only. It helps us a lot to be a better engineering professional

Ques. I got a call from IIT Bhubaneswar as well as from IIT Gandhinagar for MTech in Machine design branch. Which IIT is better?

● Top Answer By kartik on 11 Jul 24

Ans.   I think you should go for M.Tech in Mechanical Systems Design at IIT Bhubaneswar. IIT Gandhinagar offers an M.Tech in Mechanical Engineering, but not specifically in Machine Design.    IIT Bhubaneswar is placed #47 in the Engineering category as per the NIRF 2023 Ranking. The School of Mechanical Sciences at IIT Bhubaneswar has fully equipped labs. It has a state-of-the-art computing lab with thirty workstations connected to an eighteen-blade server.   Here’s a comparison between IIT Bhubaneswar and IIT Gandhinagar:   Parameters IIT Bhubaneswar Mechanical Systems Design IIT Gandhinagar Overall NIRF 2023 Engineering Ranking 47 18 Placement % (2023) 100 % 76.22% Highest Package (2023) INR 11.90 LPA - Average Package (2023) INR 8.58 LPA INR 19.34 LPA Median Package (2023) INR 9.80 LPA INR 15.18 LPA Top Recruiters on Campus (2023) Google, Microsoft, Reliance Industries, Accenture Japan, Caterpillar Accenture, Amul, Cognizant, Deloitte, Adobe   (The M.Tech placements data is not available for IIT Gandhinagar)   Although IIT Gandhinagar has a slightly higher ranking than IIT Bhubaneswar, the Mechanical Sciences Department at IIT Bhubaneswar has a much better overall value.    I would recommend you choose IIT Bhubaneswar Mechanical Systems Design over IIT Gandhinagar Mechanical for your M.Tech degree. Read more

Ques. How is the M.Tech atmosphere (workload) in SVNIT Surat in mechanical engineering?

● Top Answer By Amit Sharma on 09 Jan 24

Ans. The workload for M.Tech Mechanical students is quite manageable at SVNIT.  In the first year of M.Tech, one has to complete the coursework and attend classes from 8:30 am to 5:40 pm. In the second year, one has to complete the dissertation work and Teaching Assistant Duty (which is for 8 hours per week). SVNIT offers five M.Tech specializations in the related fields. These are- Mechanical Engineering, CAD/CAM, Thermal System Design, Turbo Machines and Manufacturing Engineering. The workload varies from department to department. One gets ample time to prepare for competitive exams as an M.Tech Mechanical student over here. Most people in M.Tech Mechanical do not attend classes regularly, and instead prepare for their entrance exams. So you need not worry on the attendance front. Read more

Ques. How is the placement of an MTech in mechanical engineering from SVNIT, Surat? Does core companies offer placement to MTech candidates?

● Top Answer By Amit Sharma on 06 Jan 24

Ans. The placement is not good for M.Tech courses. Pursuing an M.Tech from SVNIT is a better option if one wishes to prepare for competitive exams simultaneously. Taking out time for preparation isn’t difficult if one is focused and disciplined. In 2022,18 students were successfully placed on campus from M.Tech Mechanical. The highest package was 9.42 LPA, the average package was 6.86 LPA, and the lowest package was 5 LPA. As for M.Tech Manufacturing, 21 students were successfully placed on campus. The highest package was 9.58 LPA, the average package was 6.29 LPA, and the lowest package was 4.80 LPA.  Some M.Tech specializations like Computer Science, Communications System, CAD/CAM and Structure receive a few core companies for placements. But that number is far from satisfactory. Moreover, very few people are selected for these jobs. Mechanical, Thermal System Design, SMFE and MSc. Physics, mainly receive teaching offers.  Thus, the placements for M.Tech Mechanical are not satisfactory at SVNIT. Read more

Ques. How are the placements at NIT Surathkal for an M.Tech in thermal?

● Top Answer By Arindam Chakraborty on 15 Sept 23

Ans. In all engineering colleges, BTech students are given more preference than MTech students because they can do the job at a lesser salary than MTech students. Moreover, they are more in number and are ready to grab any role whatsoever. MTech students on the other hand prefer core jobs that align with their academic profile and specific interests. So the placement opportunities offered to Masters students are less. Mostly, they have two options to choose from, academia or corporate.  Academics: Many institutes offer teaching positions to master students either as a college professor or for the role of an instructor at an Entrance Exam preparation institute, Master students of the Thermal branch are eligible for these roles.  Corporate: The Mechanical department students are often recruited by companies like GE, Mercedes, Bosch, Yazaki, Alstom, etc. do come for recruitment. The requirements vary each year. In reality, the chances of landing a job as an MTech student at NIT Surathkal depend on the market rather than the institute. NITK offers a great research culture that instills all the necessary skills. The placements are unpredictable though. Ultimately I will advise you to opt for a Master’s degree only if you are really interested in getting a specialization degree because there is no guarantee you’ll get a job in the end.Read more

Ques. What is your review on NIT Silchar for M.tech in mechanical engineering?

● Top Answer By Lipika Chakraborty on 24 Aug 23

Ans. NIT Silchar is a prestigious engineering college that imparts quality education in various fields. However, the PG courses aren't very well-known and only the UG courses have gained fame over time. It is therefore advisable to check the profiles of the teachers in the respective department. Additionally, NIT Silchar is located in a remote location and you might find it difficult to procure your equipment for projects. MTech depends on the quality of the research and project you have completed and if you fail to accomplish it your MTech degree is invaluable.  Most companies visiting NIT Silchar prefer BTech students to MTech students. So getting a good job let alone a core job is very difficult here. The institute has no international ties so your future prospects may narrow down further. Consider all the above factors before making your final decision!Read more

Ques. How was your interview experience for IIT Gandhinagar for an MTech in mechanical engineering?

● Top Answer By Anisha Srivastav on 27 Jul 23

Ans. My brother had to appear for an online interview because he applied during the corona time. He joined Google Meet on time and began with his introductions. The interviewers asked him a number of questions like Describe the college you did your bachelor's from and the placement scenario there Is there any topic you are most comfortable with for the technical questions? What is compressible flow and compressible fluid? what is internal energy? PV^? what are its assumptions? Define isoentropic process dh = M Cp dt where can we apply this? Is it valid for gases only? Define Cp and Cv For solids why do we use Q=mcdt .what is C here? Why is solid C constant here? Basically, he was bombarded with a lot of technical questions although they helped him a lot. From the interview experience, he arrived at the conclusion that to ace the interview one must have revised the notes he/she prepared while studying for GATE. Read more

Ques. What are placement opportunities for students pursuing an M.Tech in mechanical engineering from IISC, Bangalore?

● Top Answer By Mayank Trivedi on 14 Jul 23

Ans. Well honestly, once you are in the grasp of the IISc magic, you will forget about placements, and your hunger for higher studies and research will grow instead. The intense workload and the dynamic research environment will bring you close to some of the geniuses who may be pursuing a Ph.D., UG, or master's. Interacting with them will make you realize that higher studies are a better option. Some who go for jobs anyway, come back to get a PhD sometime later. This is what the IISc effect is after all. As for the IISC placements for MTech Mechanical Engineering, students receive a minimum of 8 LPA packages with no limit on top packages varying from 15-25 LPA CTC. The major recruiters include companies like TATA motors, TATA steel, TCS research, Mahindra motors, Philips, Airbus, General Electric, Rolls Royce, TATA advanced system, PTC, L&T, and other design, manufacturing, and petroleum companies. The best part is that students of this branch can sit for placements in companies of Aerospace, Civil, Chemical, and Material Engineering as well.  In all placements at IISc won't be an issue for either branch yet I will say again, judging a research-oriented institute like IISc on the basis of placements is not justified. Read more

Ans. The better institute for MTech out of IIT Hyderabad and NIT Trichy depends on what you want to do after MTech. For those inclined towards research work and are willing to go for higher education like Ph.D. from a foreign university, IIT Hyderabad is the most suitable option. This is because it is a new IIT and thus has the best research and lab facilities in comparison to older IITs and NITs. The MTech program here will bring about a drastic change in your overall personality. For those who want to get employed as soon as possible, then NIT Trichy is a preferable choice. This is because The sole purpose of students coming here is to get placed with lucrative packages The initial days witness top firms after which only average companies pay a visit to the campus The placement percentage is almost 100% every year The teachers do it encourage research culture at all. This does not mean that IIT Hyderabad does not have placement opportunities. It’s just that for placements specifically, NIT is better but overall IIT Hyderabad is the best option.Read more
