MIT M.Tech Industrial Biotechnology FAQs

Ques. What is the scope of M.Tech Industrial Biotechnology from MIT Manipal? Is it worth it?

Ans. The scope is good for students interested in research and industry roles in biotech, pharma, and healthcare sectors. Graduates work as Biotechnology Scientists, Process Development Engineers, Biomanufacturing Specialists, Research Associates, and Technical Solution Managers. Key recruiters include Biocon, Syngene, GSK, Laurus Bio, Intas Pharmaceuticals, and HIMEDIA. However, students should be aware that the biotech job market in India is more research-oriented, and many graduates opt for PhD programmes or higher studies abroad for better career prospects.

Ques. Is GATE mandatory for admission? Which GATE paper should I appear for?

Ans. GATE is not mandatory. Admission is primarily through MET. However, GATE-qualified candidates get additional weightage (10% extra marks) in the merit list and are also eligible for the AICTE GATE scholarship of approximately Rs. 12,400 per month. Relevant GATE papers for this programme are BT (Biotechnology) and XL (Life Sciences - relevant sections).

Ques. What are the research opportunities available in this programme?

Ans. The School of Civil and Chemical Engineering at MIT Manipal has received multiple extramural and intramural funded research projects in areas like biopolymers, nanotechnology, drug delivery, microfluidics, bioinformatics, bioreactor design, and fermentation engineering. Students can work on these funded projects under faculty supervision. The school also encourages students to publish research papers and participate in national and international conferences.

Ques. How are the placements for M.Tech Industrial Biotechnology at MIT Manipal?

Ans. Based on NIRF 2024 data, approximately 72% of M.Tech students at MIT Manipal were placed, with a median package of Rs. 7.5 Lakhs. For Industrial Biotechnology specifically, placements are primarily in biotech, pharma, and healthcare companies. The placement cell has tie-ups with companies like Biocon, Syngene, GSK, Laurus Bio, and HIMEDIA. However, many students in this specialisation also opt for higher studies (PhD) or research positions, as the biotech industry in India is still growing.

Ques. Can B.Sc Biotechnology graduates apply for this M.Tech programme?

Ans. The primary eligibility is a B.E./B.Tech degree in Biotechnology or Chemical Engineering. B.Sc graduates are generally not eligible for M.Tech programmes at MIT Manipal. However, students with B.Sc in Biotechnology or Life Sciences may consider the M.Sc programmes offered by Manipal School of Life Sciences (MSLS) at MAHE, which are more suited to their background.

Ques. What is the difference between M.Tech Industrial Biotechnology at MIT Manipal and M.Sc Biotechnology programmes at MAHE?

Ans. M.Tech Industrial Biotechnology is an engineering-focused programme under MIT (School of Civil and Chemical Engineering) that emphasises bioprocess engineering, bioreactor design, and industrial applications. It is suited for B.Tech/B.E. graduates. M.Sc Biotechnology programmes at MAHE (offered through Manipal School of Life Sciences) are science-focused and suited for B.Sc graduates. The M.Tech has a stronger engineering and industry orientation, while M.Sc programmes are more research and science-oriented.

MIT Manipal: 2 Answered Questions

What is the total expenditure for a BTech course in Manipal Institute of Technology, Karnataka?

Sapna Malik
Shyam VermaComputer Science, and Engineering, MIT Manipal

Here is a rough estimate of the total expenditure for a BTech course at MIT Karnataka.

  • Total Tuition Fees ( BTech): INR 18.62 Lakhs
  • Hostel + Mess fees: Around 4–5 Lacs depending on the hostel you choose
  • Travel expense: On average you will be spending 750-1000 per month. So the cost of a 9-month stay for 4 years will be 1000*36= INR 36000
  • Travel expense from home to college: This varies from person to person because if you live far away, you will have to travel by airplane. Assuming, you will be taking 4 trips a year, the cost will be around 1 Lakh.
  • Misclieous Expenses: Around INR 5000 per month. So 5000 x 9 x 4 = 180000 INR.

The above estimate does take into account the money you spend partying or going on trips. Also, it's important to note that the above estimate is purely based on my speculations and may vary from person to person.

Which one is better for a BTech course: BITS Pilani or Manipal Institute of Technology Karnataka?

Bidita GhoseLives in Bengaluru, Karnataka, India

It's highly illogical to compare a Tier-1 engineering college like BITS to a Tier-2 university like Manipal Institute of Technology.

One cannot compare universities like Manipal, VIT, SRM, Jaypee, Amity, etc. to IIT, NIT, and BITS. These colleges have no brand value of their own and most of the people coming here are those who failed to qualify for competitive exams like JEE/BITSAT/AIEEE/etc. Moreover, the exposure and opportunities offered at BITS are unmatched. It's probably the only private engineering college that enjoys excellent global recognition too.

Irrespective of the branch you go for, the BITS Pilani degree has similar value everywhere. The BITS alumni network is great with some of them being co-founders of Redbus, Hotmail, etc.

Here is a brief comparison of these institutes
