MIT B.Tech Biotechnology FAQs

Ques. Is Biology mandatory for B.Tech Biotechnology admission at MIT Manipal, or can PCM students also apply?

Ans. PCM students can apply for B.Tech Biotechnology at MIT Manipal. The eligibility requires Physics, Mathematics, and English as compulsory subjects, with Chemistry, Biotechnology, or Biology as the optional subject. So students with PCM (Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics) are eligible. However, having Biology or Biotechnology as a subject in 10+2 is an added advantage given the nature of the course.

Ques. What is the difference between B.Tech Biotechnology and B.Sc. Biotechnology at MIT Manipal?

Ans. B.Tech Biotechnology is an engineering degree with a strong focus on bioprocess engineering, downstream processing, and industrial applications of biotechnology. It is a 4-year program with an engineering curriculum. B.Sc. Biotechnology, on the other hand, is a science degree offered by Manipal School of Life Sciences (MSLS) with a more theoretical and research-oriented approach. B.Tech is generally preferred for industry roles in pharma, biotech manufacturing, and R&D engineering.

Ques. What kind of companies recruit B.Tech Biotechnology graduates from MIT Manipal?

Ans. B.Tech Biotechnology graduates from MIT Manipal are recruited by companies in the pharmaceutical, biotech, food technology, and research sectors. Common recruiters include Biocon, Dr. Reddy's Laboratories, Cipla, Serum Institute of India, Piramal, and various research organizations. Some graduates also pursue higher studies (M.Tech, MBA, MS abroad) or appear for GATE/GRE after graduation.

Ques. Is the MET score the only criterion for admission, or does 10+2 marks also matter?

Ans. Both MET score and 10+2 marks matter. The merit list for B.Tech admissions at MIT Manipal is prepared with 50% weightage to MET score and 50% weightage to 10+2 marks (in Physics, Mathematics, and the optional subject). So a strong 10+2 score can compensate for a moderate MET rank and vice versa.

Ques. Can I change my branch from Biotechnology to another branch after the first year at MIT Manipal?

Ans. Yes, branch change is possible at MIT Manipal after the first year, subject to availability of seats in the desired branch and academic performance (typically a high CGPA is required). However, if you are on a Freeship or Scholar scholarship for Biotechnology, changing branches will result in forfeiture of the scholarship, and you will need to pay the full program fee for the new branch.

Ques. What are the minor specialization options available in B.Tech Biotechnology at MIT Manipal?

Ans. B.Tech Biotechnology at MIT Manipal offers two minor specializations: (1) Environmental Biotechnology, which includes subjects like Bioremediation, Design of Biological Treatment Processes, Microbial Treatment of Wastewater, and Solid Waste Management; and (2) Pharmaceutical Biotechnology, which includes Biomaterials, Biopharmaceutical Engineering, Immunotechnology, and Molecular Modeling and Drug Design. Students who complete all electives in one specialization area are awarded the minor specialization along with their B.Tech degree.

MIT Manipal: 2 Answered Questions

What is the total expenditure for a BTech course in Manipal Institute of Technology, Karnataka?

Sapna Malik
Shyam VermaComputer Science, and Engineering, MIT Manipal

Here is a rough estimate of the total expenditure for a BTech course at MIT Karnataka.

  • Total Tuition Fees ( BTech): INR 18.62 Lakhs
  • Hostel + Mess fees: Around 4–5 Lacs depending on the hostel you choose
  • Travel expense: On average you will be spending 750-1000 per month. So the cost of a 9-month stay for 4 years will be 1000*36= INR 36000
  • Travel expense from home to college: This varies from person to person because if you live far away, you will have to travel by airplane. Assuming, you will be taking 4 trips a year, the cost will be around 1 Lakh.
  • Misclieous Expenses: Around INR 5000 per month. So 5000 x 9 x 4 = 180000 INR.

The above estimate does take into account the money you spend partying or going on trips. Also, it's important to note that the above estimate is purely based on my speculations and may vary from person to person.

Which one is better for a BTech course: BITS Pilani or Manipal Institute of Technology Karnataka?

Bidita GhoseLives in Bengaluru, Karnataka, India

It's highly illogical to compare a Tier-1 engineering college like BITS to a Tier-2 university like Manipal Institute of Technology.

One cannot compare universities like Manipal, VIT, SRM, Jaypee, Amity, etc. to IIT, NIT, and BITS. These colleges have no brand value of their own and most of the people coming here are those who failed to qualify for competitive exams like JEE/BITSAT/AIEEE/etc. Moreover, the exposure and opportunities offered at BITS are unmatched. It's probably the only private engineering college that enjoys excellent global recognition too.

Irrespective of the branch you go for, the BITS Pilani degree has similar value everywhere. The BITS alumni network is great with some of them being co-founders of Redbus, Hotmail, etc.

Here is a brief comparison of these institutes
