The best placement story would be that of my friend's brother and here's why - he is everything you can imagine. He has been a very multidimensional person with active participation in workshops and extracurriculars, he was the class representative and is a topper as well with a 9.2 CGPA.

The story goes somewhat like this -

In the middle of September, the placement count of the production department was 1/55. Only one student was placed with CitiCorp. Following this, Titan, Hyundai, and Caterpillar came for recruitment as well.
After five days of presentations, tests, GD, and interviews those who had applied for Caterpillar assembled at the CEG campus' CUIC auditorium, where students were given technical and aptitude tests to solve.
My friend's brother qualified up to GD but wasn't able to crack it. However, he wasn't disappointed and the next day took the Titan online test in the IT Department but the result got delayed and the company was not reachable.
Although to his surprise, Caterpillar again came for recruitment along with M&M and Vedanta. This was probably the last opportunity for all to get placed with a core company.
These time marks from the previous rounds were being considered by Caterpillar and he has reached up to GD. He became busy preparing for that even while traveling or eating and did make it to the personal interview.

He recollected all the basics of engineering and was ready with his resume points and by 6 pm he made it to the job with his perseverance. I hope this inspires you to make the best of your time.

Yes, not only this year but for the last 5-6 years, MIT Aeronautical Engineering has been facing a lot of trouble in general.

The primary reason is that it is one of the university departments of Anna University.
In India, there are fewer core companies, and they mostly visit the IITs and NITs.
Most of the students are attending IITs and NITs, which also decreases the number of students getting admission in MIT.
Exams are used by public sector companies such as DRDO and ISRO to hire employees, and students had to apply after completing their undergraduate degrees.
The curriculum isn't very good, in comparison to other streams.
Some businesses require specialization, so they opt for P.G.
There was no proper guidance from the staff. This is a major issue in the department.

For placements, you will be competing with the entire batch as well as the students of CEG and ACT campuses. So, prepare accordingly. According to the recent placement highlights, the average CTC received by the students is 4 LPA.

Apart from the placements, the faculty base for the Mechanical Department is average at best. Also, as the department is quite new, lab facilities are limited and depend a lot on CEG.

People with stellar grades and superb academics throughout have struggled to land top jobs while average grade students have bagged dream roles in big companies such as Google and Apple.

Now there are certain things which are in your hand which can certainly help improve your chances during placements.

Aim for better grades in whatever time you have at IIT Madras.
Do a good internship. Get some practical exposure to the industry. Remember internships are more about learning than getting good compensation.
Work on research projects or industrial projects at the college level as well as industrial level, if possible. Also, aim for publishing your research in good journals. This will improve your credibility drastically.
Most important of all, improve your communication skills, both verbal as well as written. This is a soft skill that is often neglected by students, but in fact, is one of the most important skills to possess and could be the x-factor of an average student over a strong candidate.

If you do all the above things you will definitely bolster your chances of getting selected at those companies. But remember one thing, you should aim for a job profile which interests and suits you over an uninteresting job at a top company.
