To get admission in lateral entry, the candidates must have a 3-year diploma in engineering or a B.Sc. from a recognised university with a minimum of 60% marks and are eligible to apply. Admissions are mostly on the basis of rank of the candidate in the concerned entrance tests, i.e., the Common University Entrance Test (CUET) or other entrance tests. Where there is vacant seating during counselling sessions, the institute can choose to fill seats through direct admissions on merit, taking into consideration candidates who have qualified for the minimum eligibility criteria, which entails obtaining at least 45% marks (40% for SC/ST candidates) in the entrance test. For example, students from core branches of engineering (like Mechanical, Electrical, Civil, or Electronics) who get selected in a company that is not core (like an IT organisation) are allowed to keep attending placement drives of core companies until they receive an offer in their own core area. Also, if a student is offered a job and later becomes eligible for a "Dream Offer", meaning one that pays more than two times the compensation package of the original one, they can accept the better-paying job. Such provisions are made to maintain equity in the placement process while respecting students' desires for occupations closely related to their area of study or better-paying ones.
