LTMMC MD Orthopaedics FAQs
Ques. What is the difference between MD Orthopaedics and MS Orthopaedics at LTMMC?
Ans. LTMMC offers both MD Orthopaedics and MS Orthopaedics. While MS Orthopaedics is the more common surgical postgraduate degree in orthopaedics, MD Orthopaedics is a less common variant that is also recognised by MUHS and NMC. Both programmes provide comprehensive training in orthopaedic surgery and management. The MD Orthopaedics at LTMMC has very limited seats (typically 1 seat), making it extremely competitive.
Ques. What types of orthopaedic cases are available for training at LTMGH?
Ans. The Department of Orthopaedics at LTMGH handles a wide range of cases including fracture management, joint replacement (hip and knee), spine surgery, paediatric orthopaedics, sports injuries, tumour surgery, and complex trauma cases. The high volume of trauma cases from the Sion area and surrounding regions of Mumbai provides excellent hands-on surgical training for residents.
Ques. What is the monthly stipend for MD Orthopaedics residents at LTMMC?
Ans. PG residents at LTMMC receive a monthly stipend as per MCGM (Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation) norms. The exact amount is subject to periodic revision by MCGM. Historically, stipends at government municipal colleges in Mumbai have been competitive compared to private institutions.
Ques. Is there a bond/service obligation after completing MD Orthopaedics at LTMMC?
Ans. Government medical colleges in Maharashtra, including LTMMC, may require PG graduates to serve in rural or government health facilities for a specified period after completing their degree, as per Maharashtra government policy. Candidates should verify the current bond requirements at the time of admission, as these policies are subject to change.
Ques. Can candidates from other states apply for MD Orthopaedics at LTMMC through the state quota?
Ans. The 50% State Quota seats at LTMMC are primarily reserved for Maharashtra domicile candidates. However, candidates from other states can apply for the 50% All India Quota seats through MCC counselling. Non-MUHS passout students are also required to pay a higher MUHS eligibility fee of Rs. 15,000.
Ques. What are the career prospects after MD Orthopaedics from LTMMC?
Ans. MD Orthopaedics graduates from LTMMC are well-placed for careers in government hospitals, private hospitals, and independent orthopaedic practices. Many graduates pursue super-specialisation (DNB/Fellowship) in sub-specialties like joint replacement, spine surgery, sports medicine, or paediatric orthopaedics. The growing demand for orthopaedic services in India, driven by an ageing population and increasing sports injuries, makes this a highly rewarding career path.
